Reed, and Orrin Guernsey, eTs on the part of the United States, duly appointed by the President, and the under- signed chiefs and headmen of the O’Gallala band of Dakota or Sioux Indians. ARTICLE First. The O'Galiaia pand of Da- kota or Sioux Indians, represented iu council, hereby ackcowledge themselves to be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction and authority of the United States, and hereby obligate and bind themselves, ividually and collectively, not only to cease all hostilities against the persons and property of its citize but to use their snfiuence, and, if necessary, physical force to prevent other bands of the D: a Indians, or other adjacent tribes from making hostile de- Monstrations agwinst the Governmeat or peo- ple of the United States. ARTICLE SECOND. Inasmuch as the Goy- ernment of the United States is desirous to ar- rest the effusion of blood between the Indian tribes within its jurisdiction hitherto at war with each other, the O'Gallala band of Dakota or Sioux Indians, represen: council, anxious to respect the wishes of the Government, hereby gree to discontinue for the future all attacks upon the persons or property of other tribes, unless first attacked by them, and to use their initnence to promote peace everywhere in the region occupied or frequented by them. ARTICLE THIKD. AN contro ies or dif- ferences arising between the (Galiaia band of Dakota or Sicux, represented in council. and other tribes of Ladiahs, involving the question Of peace or war, shall be submited s suemitied for the arbitrament of tne arbi- trament of the President, or such person or persons as may be desiguated by him, and the decision or award faithfully observed by the said band represented in council. ARTICLE ForrtH. The said band, repre- sented im council, shall withdraw from the routes overland, already established or by after to be esizblished, through their coantr: or following, to ence with the persons and property of ot the United States travelling thereon, the Government of the United States agree to pay to the said band the sum of ten thousand dollars annually, for twenty years, in such articles as the Secretary of the Interior may Girect: Provided, That said band, sorepresent- ed m council, shail faithfully conform to te requirements of th.s treaty. ICLE Firta. Should any individual or in- utis or portion of the band of the O'Gal- ia band of Dakota or Sioux Indians, repre- sented in council, des hereafter to Jocat permanently upon any land claimed by said band for the purposes of agricultural or other similar pursuits, it is hereby agreed by the parties to this treaty, that such individuals Shall be protected in stich location against any annoyance or molestation on the partof whites or ludians; and whenever twenty lodges or tamilies of the ('Gallala band shall have lo- ested on land for agricu signified the same to th or superin- tendent, they, as wellas other families sv lo- cating, sDall receive the sum of twenty- dollars annually, for five years, for each f: ily. im Agricultural implements and improve- ments; and when one hucdred lodgts or fami- hes shall have so engaged in agricultural pur- suits. they shall be entitlea to a tarmer and blacksmith. at the expense of the Government; as also teachers, at the option of the Secretary of the Interior, whenever deemed necessary. | ARTICLE SIXTH.
