Baker, who was recently convicted of false imprison- ment, inquired in the Criminal Court as to what disposition was tobe made of the re- against him; one charging him with the robbery of $200 from Mrs. Cobb, &nd the other with ialse imprisonment of Mr. Cobb. Mr. Stanton announced the readiness Of the defense to proceed with the trial. for the prosecution, stated that they were ready to proceed with the INDICTMENTS Toaining indictments Judge Hughes, Judge Fisher suggested that there were a large number of prisoners in jail awaiting trial, 226 at present, and he did not feel disposed to take up these protracted trials one after another until some of the jail cases are disposed of. If, bowever, the counsel would fix upon a future time for trial, the cases would then be taken up. Sar Stanton said that he would consult with Mr. Baker and fix as early day as possible for the trial, as the accused was anxious to have the cases disposed of. Mr. Hughes moved the court to direct the jury to modify their verdict by striking out that portion of it relative to extortion, and to render & verdict of guilty as indicted. Samuel Fletcher. Justice Morsell held Granp Larceny.— Patrick Joice and John Handley were arrested yesterday by officer Harris, of the First Ward. for the larceny of 20 in money from Michael Burns. It appeared in evidence that Juice kept a restaurant in the First Ward, and Burns went there to stay one night in January last, and had to sleep with the accused, and during that night his money was taken.
