Old Fi twenties closed X lower. Gold has taken aslightdown- ‘ward turn, partly owing to a cessation of the demand for covering “short” contracts, and ly from reports that the adoption of the | clause in the new loan bill authorizing a foreign load will be strongly urged upon Congress, and that there is some prospect of its being passed into law. The price fluctuated during the morning between 139% and 1304. The following from the Baltimore American gives the condition of the market Cattle. —The quality of the cattle market did Bot compare favorable with last week's re- ceipts, and prices were not maintained, the de- cline averaging YaXc. per pound. Hogs.—The market has been well supplied With hogs, and remains very dull. Sales of small lots to butchers ranged trom $12.50 to $14 per 100 pounds, net, and of large lots to packers and others from $12.50 to $13. Sheep.—Receipts have about met the demand, and prices have ruled steady at 6% teS cts., gross, as to quality. Coffee.—Sales are small, but prices are main- tained for Rio, ranging from 17} to 20 cents, gold, as to quality. Flour.—No transactions of moment were re- orted on “Change in trade and shipping rands, andthe market closed very flat. The modus operandi is thus described :— “Muzziers” stand on corners. apparently sky- larking among themsetyes. Suddenly one of them falls down and rolls himself against the ———. whoalsomusttumble. At first the latter deems it an accident, but soon realizes the des: te object of the tumble. The man who rolls against the pedestrian is soon on top ml _ latrer, when he 1s down, amd quick as a laces his hand upon his face, presses his eomae together with his thumb and finger, and cevers his mouth with his hand. His cries are thus stifled, and the unfortunate pedestrian is almost smothered. Whilst this is done by one, the others go through the man’s pockets and rifle them of their contents. This takes some three or four minutes, during which time the victim's breath is shut off. When the | muzziers get through, the victim is so used up, exhausted and unconscious, that he is usable to give an alarm, let alone pursue the robbers. He is obliged to lay there a few minutes, until he recovers himself, which allows the muzzlers &n apportunity to escape. A Neat Correction.—The United States Service Magazine reports the following war story: “In Kentucky, General Nelson stric tly prohibited any depredations upon the property of citizens by his troops. and a committee was Appointed to inquire whether any offences had been committed. In making his returns, one Joe Forman, a member of the committee, re- ported there had been no loss sustained except “two beehives and a chicken without any | boney in it.” Sam Owens, the school-master, who was onthe committee, corrected the re- port to make it read: «With the exception of a chicken and two beehives, the latter containing no honey.” S7 Anarmy chaplain relates the following story: Seeing a dirty-faced butternut urchin at the fence in front of a house, the preacher Stopped and said: “Is your father at home!” “No; he’s gone to church.” ” «Is your mother int’ “No: she’s gone too.” “Then you're all ns yourself” “No; Sam's in thar huggin’ tee nigger gal.” “That's bad!” “Yes, it’s bad, Dut it’s the best he can do!
