— EVENING STAR. PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS. The Danger of Neglecting Colds. [Prom the New York Lancet.} Colds are generally considered but simple things. and, as a natural consequence, are too waneb meghectet. How often do you hear the remark: “Ob} itis only a cold.” “True, only a cold, what is being done for it! Frequent- ly nothing. Many aiong and dangerous, and sometimes fatal fit of riness ee ens ed by paying that proper atten whist iveo eeriousiy demands. Most of the cBures of consumption come from cold being | tm the first instance neglected. To many other diseases does it also give rise. In a climate like this, where we have sometimes two and three changes it 2 day, it is impossible toayord | taking cold, unless due precaution be observed | Persons should clothe themselves as much as possible in keeping with the temperature of the | atmosphere. e With the thermometer above zero, clothing | should not be as warm as at or below zero, as | by so doing the pores are opened to an undue extent, sometimes profuse perspi duced, and, sa natural consequence, taken. Drafts in every way, whether in or out of doors, ought to be avoided. Too much im- portance cannot be given to this, but yet we tee it daily neglected. How often do we see persone in this city, on one of the bleakest days, Stepp me to talk at the corner of the street in a dratt of wird. This, too, is generally the case after walking fast and becoming heated. How is it possible, under such circumstances, to | avoid taking cold! And yet persons will so in- Pecently tell yon, “I don't know how [ could have taken cold; 1 have not exposed myself in any way.” As important, also, is the mode of life in- doors, or on this much depends. Ladies are Very apt to dress for going out, and then sit in a warm room for half an hour, perhaps more, | iftomething delays them, by which perspira- tion is produced, and in that state, from the warm house into the cold air, they go. It must be remembered that to the corresponding tera- Perature of the atmosphere do the pores close | or open; a uniform temperature should be ob- served, as by so doing the circulstion is regu- jarly maintained. Any one leaving :n atmos- phere of eighty degrees, and going to one of sixty degrees, experiences a great change, and if they wish to ayoid cold should be clad in such & mapper as to make up for the propor- Monate difference in temperature. For this reason great uniformity in the temperature of the house should be observed. Change the atmotphere in the house trequently by ad- ‘ng. as often as possible, during the day, cold is y house should be thoroughly ventilated the first thing every morning, so as to allow the atmosphere of the previous night to escape. This can be done by first airing one part and then another. By doing this a honse also can be the more easily warmed. When there are many persons collected in a room, care should he observed to keep a few inches of the window open from the top, every one avoiding sitting elore to or under it, as, after a time, when there are many collected together the atmosphere of the room becomes impregnated with their ex- halations, and the air is thus rendered impure. By periect ventilation there is a uniform amount of oxygen, which is the vital part of the atmosphere, and which is necessary to our very existence, maintained) Who has not Reticed the disagreeable feeling produced on going from the fresh air into a room with many pereons, in which the ventilation is imperfect! At night, also, fresh air should be admitted imto the room, for it is, if anything, more neces- sary that there should be a plentiful supply of oxygen. We have often been asked the ridicu- lous question, if enough air did not come in through thekey-hole. Certainly not. Thatis not fresh air. Muke it a rule always to sleep With part of your window open from the top, @voiding its blowing cn you. Fresh air never hurt any one, for by it we live. It is the want of it that injures. ersons seem to forget that they spend one-third of their lives in their bed- rooms. We frequently see a man building a house bestowing all his attention on the plan of the parlors, while the bedrooms are, to a greatextent. and in some instances entirely, neglected. It had better be rice versa. Erother thing to which we wish to draw at- tention is that of neglecting to change shoes and stockings after being out on adamp or rainy day. Though they may neither appear Bor feel damp. yet they shouid be changed, care being observed to keep the feet always warm. As long as one is walking, the circula- tion is kept up, no matier how wet the feet may be. but the instant you remain quiet it is checked, unless the stockings and shoes be | changed. Holding the feet but a few minutes to a fire over a register, is not sufficient, as you only by that dry the external part of the shoe or boot. If the feet are cold they should be Fubbed thoroughly with a rough towel until warmth bas been restored. when they might | be, if desired, held for a short time before the fire. Jumping out of bed and walking about on the carpet, as is too often done, should be avoided. A pair of slippers can be so placed by the bed at night, when retiring, as to be ac- | ceseible on rising. Tae Pork Market.—The Cincinnati Price | Current of Wednesday says:—At the close Prices of groceries, cotton, dry goods, and pro- Guce generally, were qnite unsettled, so much so that accurate quotations could not well be given. Pork may be called an exception to this rule. which is owing to the prospect of a very short supply of the article, for although | the receipts of hogs at this place and Chicazo during the week have been very large, the | belief is strong and general that the crop will fall considerably short of two million head, and that these large receipts will soon cease it may be stated here, however, that two weeks ago the short erop parties could not | be persuaded that the receipts could, under any circumstances, be large as they have been since our last, showing that opinions are but of little value. Itis exceedingly difficult to arrive at any correct conclusion regarding the supply of hogs in the country until the bulk of them have been brought to market. Under the large receipts prices declined fully 75 cents per cental during the weight, but closed firm atthe decline. At Chicago the decline has been much larger than this, but the market closed buoyant there lastevening at 9Xal0 cents for dressed hogs, and $25.5ta%25.75 for mess pork, which is an aavance of $1 per barrel on ress pork, and 50 cents per 100 pounds on hogs from the lowest point reached ee ted Inventor and Patentee of Karr’s ( rat AMERICAN CHRONOMETER, Manufacturer and Dealer in Ohrouomete: Watches, No. 450 Penna. ave., bet. 3d and cates Washington.
