A Rev arKarre Ste —Senator Wade far- hishes to the press the following temarkable story “On Wednesday evening last, between eizht and nine o’clock, a man of unusually large proportions, dressed in grey clothes, called at the residence of Hon. Benjamin F. Wade, Uni- ted States Senator of Ohio, on 4 street, and asked tosee the Senator. He was shown “ siairs by the servant to Mr. Wade's room. A’ ter being seated he stated that he was trying to obtain employment in the United States navy, and asked Mr. Wade to sign @ paper cf rec- ommendation for hima in order to further his object. Ps “Senator Wade refused to do so, saying he did not know him, and advised bim to procure the signature of some person to whom he was known. After listening to this reply, the strange visitor, whose phisiognomy Mr. Wade describes as singularly malicious and bratal, looked at the Senator with a significant scowl, which the latter plainly interpreted as mean- ing mischief. At this juncture of the interview Mr. Wade Brose, and, steppin nto an adjoining room, armed himself with a loaded pistol, and quietly returned again into the room where the man in gray was sitting. After looking at each other some time in silence. the man began the conversation by saying, “Aint yon going to sign my pape To which the Senator returned an emphatic negative, adding that he had no knowledge of him Matters now began to reach a crisis. The stranger arose to his feet, drawing out a bowie- knife about twelve inches long. and remarking, «I suppose you know we are now alone, sir, 3p this room.” He was proceeding to unsheath his weapon, when Senator Wade sprang to his feet, aud drawing forth his pistol, placed it with a short distance ot bis head, telling him to clear out immediately or he would shoot bim. Taken somewhat by surprise, the man in gray began to find his way tothe door, follow- ed up closely by Senator Wade, with his pis- tol still in close proximity to his head. The Senator, with trne Western politeness, saw his visitor down stairs, and, before reaching the door, quietly informed him that he had agreat notion to shoot him anyhow. Upon this the pr departed. ¢ the visit he failed to produce any pa- pers for signature, and evidently made this a mnere pretext for the interview. At the time of the visit there were no persons in the house besides Senator Wad “xcept Mr. Matthews and his lady and a servant. = U. S.
