Porto Rico 1MPORTANT TO THE INSURED.—The Supreme “ourt of Massachusetts has just madea de- ion of much tmportance to the insured. It is, that when a policy of insurance contains a clause to the effect that if the building insured is unoccupied for any time, without notice to | the office, the policy is void, the building mus actually be in use during that time; itis not sufficient that everything remains in readiness for use and occupancy, and it is visited every day. The case that brought out this decision was the suit of one Keith ys. the Quincy Mutnal Insurance Company, to recover the insurance ona trip-bammer shop destroyed by fire. The building, which was connected with other shops, was unused, sometimes for months, thongh it was always kept ready for service and was visited every day to see that everything wasstraight. But the jndge ruled that this was not enough to constitute occu- pancy, and if the building had remained with- out apy practical use for 3) days—the time Fpecified in the policy—it was really an unoc- cupied Duilding for that time, and the policy became void: and the fall bench have sustained that ruling. In this case it was the renewal of an old policytbat had no snch clause in the original, and the plaintiff testified that he did not know that the clause was in the new poticy; nut his ignorance made no difference in the decision. lp this view of the case, there area great Many nanoceupied buildings, and a large Bomber of insurance policies are void, if they havea clause compelling the occupancy of buildings all the time, without notice is given tothe contrary. People who leave their houses for a mouth or two in the summer, though they may, perhaps, be visited every day, are liable, nnéer this ruling, to lose their insurance if the house should be destroyed by fire; and the same is true of an unoccupied office or shop. It is important, at all events, that people who have their buildings insured should know exactly what thei policies require, or they become lia- ble at any me to lose their insurance in case of fire, through some trifling, perhaps merely techni: violation of the terms imposed by the Insurance companies.—Springfeld Republican &7 A horrible murder has occurred at Shel- byvilie, Illimois. On last Wednesday after- noor, Thomas F. Thornton, jr.,of the firm of W.F. Thornton & Sons, bankers, walked into the clothing stere of Max Deeman and deliber- ately shot, without any warning, Lieutenant Colonel George Tackett, who was reading a newpaper atthe time. Tackett rose from his cbair aud staggered towards the door, when Thornton shot him again, the ball entering his shoulder. Tackett then ran out of the door into the street, followed by Thornton, who again sbot «im im the small of the back. This shot brought Tacket’ to the ground, and Thornton then walked up to the dying man and placed bis'revolver to bis head and shot bim again, the ball passing completely threugh his head. Thornton then walked to bis banking honse, Trownted a horse and fled. Nothing has been beard of him since. Tackettexpired ina few erconds. A criminal intimacy between Tackett and Thornton's white, is alleged to have been the cause of the deed. Gen. GRANT IS CH ARLESTON.—The Charles- ton Courier of December 2 says: “Lieutenant General Grant and staff arrived in this city by the Nortbeastern Railroad train at balf-past ten o'clock yesterday moruing. He was re- ceived and welcomed by Major General Sick- les and other officers commanding, and escorted by the military to the residence of General Sickles, Charlotte street, where he will receive Visitors between twelve and two o'clock to- Gay. We understand that General Grant is on an official visit of inspection, and that he will rr n here for a few days longer, when he ‘will proceed to Savannah.” On the let the merchants and citizeus of the city, sent an invitation to General Grant to 2@ public dinner, but the General having too many epgagem before him, declined. SFA puzzling phenomenon is exercising the citizens of Auburn ard Lewiston, Me. The Windows and doors of many houses have late- ly betuken themselvesto rattling, with inter- missions of silence and with variationsin de- erecofthe noise. What is the cause! is the Question. &F George Thomas, son of Sir Wm Thomas, Frrovet, from England, bas been arrested aud locked op im the Tombs at New York, to await trial on the charge of forging bills of credit on Dencan, Sherman & Co., of that city &7 Tbe counsel of Mrs. Kirby, the woman whoshot ber husband in Richmond a few days Seo, assume the ground that her jealousy amounted to insanity.
