Surgeon Robert Reyburn, U.S. V , Surgeon qu Chief of the Freedmen’s Burean for the Dis- tri& of Columbia, has made a report to Colonel Eaton for the month of September, from which at sppears thatin Loudon county, Va., there are about 6,000 freedmen, who are self-support- ing, *=d hence have not required any medical assistance from the Bureau. In Fairfax county, Va., the number of freed- men is estimated at 3,00, and they are almost entirely self-supporting. 1m Alexandria, Va., the number of freedmen is about 8,000, and in consequence of the contraction in tae opera- tions of the government. eaused by the close of the war, a large number of these people have been thrown out ofemployment, and hence will baye to be provided with medical assistance during the winter. A hospital has been es- i at Alexandria by Bureau for their efit, containing 100 beds, of which 50 are now oceupied. Dr. L. Heard has been placed in charge of the hospital, and two other ag aes cians employed to visit the out-door sick. In Washington the number of physicians at- tending out-door patients, has been reduced to three, which is believed to be sufficient tosup- Ry the wants of the freedmen. Among the causes thus enumerated by Sur- geon Dep bape is the improper cleaning of the streets, filthy condition of the canal, the im- rfect and insufficient drainage of the city, ractice of allowing the deposit of filih wi the city limits, and the erection of a large number of tenementa on the outskirts of the city, which are closely crowded together, and are entirely destitute of all conveniences requisite for cleanliness or even decency. n conclusion, Surgeon Reyburn remarks : “As there is Kalgg? @ probability that we will Baye a visit from the cholera next season it may be well for our city authorities to consider whether they will not be in some degree re- sponsible for a portion of the mortality that will ensue, if the named causes of disease are nRotas far as practicable removed.
