PETERSBURG, Oct. 3.—At a meeting of freed- men to-night the largest African church in the city was crowded to excess. Captain Stuart Barnes, of the Freedmen’s Bureau, made an interesting address, exhorting them to labor, and disabusing the minds of the blacks of the idea that, the lands of their late owners were to be divided among them. The address was enthu- siastically received. Several colored speakers are exhorting labor and sobriety and counsel- ing friendly feelings toward the whites. At a late hour the meeting adjourned. Movements of General Grant. CrxcrxnxaTi, Oct. 3—General Grant left nere this morning tor Columbus, where he met with an enthusiastic reception. He goes to Steuben- ville to-morrow. —_--+e ___ The Fenian Movement in Ireland. The English papers by the Belgian, which left Liverpool on the 2ist ultimo are filled with accounts of the Fenian movement and the pre- cautionary measures taken by the British goy- ernment. A strong fleet still keeps watch on the west coast of Ireland, and on the arrival of each of the American steamers at Q ueenstown, the pas- sengers’ luggage is searched by the police for documents and arms. Some arms were found in the Iuggage of Robinson O’Rafferty, who ‘was committed. A proclamation has been issued for disarm- ing the city and county of Cork. James Murphy, one of the men arrested at Dublin, who described himself as a citizen of Boston, and protested against his arrest, had been set at liberty “after (says the Freemen) an interview between the American Consul and the authorities.” It is stated that Murphy is connected with the War Department at Washington. James Stevens, for whom a reward of £100 is offered, was aid-de-camp to Smith O’Brien at Ballingery, in 1848. The Morning Post editorially asserts that the American Government is strangly opposed to the Fenians, and will do all in its power to defeat them. It says President Johnson and Mr. Seward are animated by the most friendly sentiments towards England, and the latter has communicated Fenian movements to the British Cabinet, and neither the British public nor the Government will readily forget Mr. Seward’s honorable and amicable conduct. The Daily News thinks the Fenian collay is likely to settle, in a beneficial way, the rela- tions between the United States and Ireland, and that bea gocag relations between England and Ireland are likely to be far better under- stood than they have ever yet been. A London correspondent has the following: The Fenian excitement has had one curious effect. It has compelled Mr. Bourcicanit to suspend the representation of “ Arrah-na- Pogue” in his theater in the city of London, and it will, no doubt, be stopped for a time throughout the kingdom. It wasall very well to sing “Wearing of the Green” in peaceful times, but when Fenians are drilling, and fleets and armies marshaling, it Coes not do to play at treason and rebellion. Those Bonds. New York Cor. Philadelphia Ledger.} I have been at some pains to ascertain the truth of the statement in one of the morning apers that the steamers City of Boston and irin, which sailed from this port for Liver- pool on Saturday, carrying out $1,000,000 in bonds ‘for the use of the embryo Irish Repub- lic, but nobody can be found who knows any- thing about it. If any such bonds have been sent, itis believed John Bull’s custom-house officers, on the other side, will make short work with them. That such bonds have real- ly antl gabe in this city, however, I am informed admits of no doubt whatever. Brent, of Baltimore, and James Mackubin, of Elli- cott’s Mills, filed a motion before his Honor Judge Smith, praying a rule, in the nature of a writ of warranto, upon Messrs. Hol- lofield, registers of Howard county, under the law by the last Legislature providing for registratien of all legal voters of the State, requiring them to show cause why they should not be vented from exercising the fupctions of ir office and all theiract: as registers declared nulland void. Itis therefore unconrtitutional. 2d.
