For the same privilege on the Central Railroad, thetax is $5,500 per year. This seems a large sum, and yet it is said that a large income is derjved from the operations. On the Hadson River Road the sales average $100 toeach throngh train. On the Central the average is 2150 per train. ‘The books and papers are not sold by the owners of the right, but by boys empioyed by them. The boys receive 15 per cent. On all sales, and make large wages. w7 Judge Butler, of the First Judical Dis- trict of Tennessee, in @ recent case brought be- fore him, where a man had sued a returned rebel for damages caused by rebcl soldiers, de- cided in substance that every man connected with the rebellion was personallyffresponsible for acts done in furtherance ef the rebellion, and instructed the jury that if the defendant was an active rebel, and the act complained of an act of rebellion, the defendant was liable for damages. @7- Mr. Taliaferro P. Shaffner predicts the fatiure of the Atlantic telegraph, even if suc- cessfully laid, within ninety days after the first messages are transmitted. Mr. Shaffner is in- terested in the overland line, and. of course, has 2 prejudice against the Atlantic line. Ney- ertheless, there are many reasons to fear that he will prove correct. The problem of tele- graphing across the ocean will by no means be settled by the successful laying of the cable. wa-A New York letter in the Providence Journal tells of a clergyman who lost $60,000 of his own, all of his mother’s estate, $100,000 belonging to his father-in-law, and inyolved two or three of his parishioners by stock and goldspeculations. He wound up by being dis- missed from his church, and is now consigned to poverty in “a sequestered retreat,”—the State Prison, perhaps. @7-It is stated that the Southerners in Paris owe two millions of francs. Eleven have been in the debtor’s prison. a7 The first foreign vessel since the opening of the port arrived at Charleston on July 4, with an assorted cargo from Bermud: wz Some unpatriotic fellow who was fond of sleeping late, stole the tongues from the charch bells in Ellsworth, Maine, on the night before the Fourth, and the next morning theretore they were speechiess. @Z7-A considerable gap in society, at Walla Waila, Oregon, has been cansed by the hang- ing of fifteen thieves by a vigilance committee. @2The Catskill, the only iron-clad in Charleston harbor, has been ordered North. @7 Gen. Garfield was sun struck at Ravena, Ohio, while delivering an address on the 4th, but he soon recovered. wa? Kentucky has raised during the war no less than 62,938 white troops and 25,434 United States colored troops, (together =8,376,) besides $,000 colored troops, for whom there were no Tolls and 2,000 white. e7 itis strange to hear of the Imperial family of Russia being ander the necessity of retrench- ing their domestic expenditures. “The fact ap- | pears to be that the public exchequer is at pres- ent very low, so much indeed that the ministers have had orders not to allow their subordinates any extra indulgences. we The consumption of beer is rapidly in- creasing in the United States. In 1560, the amount soid was eight millions of barrels. In 1864 the quantity used had increased to 24 millions of barrels, or about an average of a barrel a piece for everybody. @7 The coal dealers of Boston have fixed the price of coal at $9 a ton. &#~ Sixteen millions of bushels of grain have passed through the port of Detroit, Mich., since the opening of navigation.
