THE EVENING STAR. W. D. WALLACH, Editor and Proprietor. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY........-.es0e0eeJULY 8, 1965. @ READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. BEE OUTSIDE FOR INTMRESTING TELE- GRAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. THE MARY HARRIS TRIAL. ——_e—_— PROCEEDINGS TO-DAY. SSR Se Testimony of Secretary McCullough. — At 10 o'clock this morning the Court opened, and ina few moments Miss Harris, who was attired the same as yesterday, entered, leaning on the arm of Hon. D. W. Voorhees, one of her counsel, accompanied by three lady friends, and the others of her counsel, and took herseat utthe large tabie in front of the Clerk’s desk. ‘The jury in the case came mto Court from their quarters at the National, and took their seats in the box. There was quite as large a crowd present to-day as has appeared on any previ- ous day. The first witness called was— George H. Walker (policeman), Testified that he could not positively identify the prisoner, because she did not look as fleshy as she did at the time. Witness, on the 30th of January, ‘was called on togo tothe Treasury, and he ‘went up, when he met Mr. Handy, who took fim toaroom and placed the woman in his custody, with orders to admit no one but Mr. McCullough. Witness was there about half zm bour, and when the mittimus was made out he went to the jail with her. Witness saw the pistol, which was a Sharpe’s patent. Witness ad A conversation’ with the accused after he took her in custody. When he went in the Foom sbe was walking backwards and for- wards, and she asked him_ when he was going to take her to jail. Mr. McCullough took her to the hack, and he started with her to jail. ‘Witness asked if she had no friends in’ the to which she answered “none atall.”” Witness asked if she had eyer been here before to which she answered that she had been here once be- fore, coming in the morning and not seeing Mr. Burronghs she left the same evening. As the hack was turning F street into Sth street, she said «J will tell you all about it.” Witness said he did not wish to hear aboutit. At the room the mecused asked witness to telegraph to a lady— Miss Lonisa A. Devlin, Janesyille, Wis.—and ‘wrote the address in his book. Witness asked what he should telegraph when she replied he knew what he saw, and witness telegraphed as near as he cin recollect, “I haye ar- vived in Washington; shot Burrougus; come on or telegraph.” As the hack was turning into 5th street she said that she did not ask sympa. thy for herself, but her family; that this man had cansed her to be driven from her home and triends, and had seduced her and taken her to @ bad house in Chicago; and she had told him that if he did not comply with his promises she would have revenge on him at the risk of her life; that sbe had procured the pistol in Ch 0; had come on with that determination, ®rriving here that morning, and had accom- plished her object, or something to that effect. y that time they had arrived at the gate; she appeared in great distress; was very weak, and witests assisted her in. There was nothing else said, except she told him to telegraph She did not speak of the time when th ‘wrongs were commitied She was crying vy olently, and in great distress the whole time. By Mr. Bradle: ‘Witness gave the words 5 near as possi’ as he could recollect. At the jail she told witness ifhe wantedshe would explain all. Witness told her that she had toid too much; he thought she should not haye said anything until she secured counsel. Witness told her that he did not want to hear anything about it. Witness is certain that she said he hhad caused her to be driven-from her home and friends; had taken her toa bad house in Chicago; that he had seduced her, and had told if he did not comply she would haye revenge. Witness thinks that she said something about a year ago; but don’t recollect that she said any- thing about the time she lett Chicago or bougut the pistol. Wime: did not make this state- ment until he was examined before the coron- ers jury. She was greatly excited at the time. Hon. Hugh MeCullough, Secretary of the Treas- ury, sworn.—Witness identified the prisoner, and recollects having an interview with heron the day of the oceurrence, and thinks a police officer was presenti Vitness had a conversa- tion with her, bat it was pretty difficuit tor him to recollect the precise conversation. On her part it was chiefly in exclamations. Wit- ness thinks she firstasked “Is he dead?” and at the time witness went out, and when he re- turned with the news that Burroughs was deed she was much excited, and exclaimed “Why did I doit? why did I doit!” In the course of conversation she stated that she bad known the deceased for many years, and had been engaged to him.
