The ex- aminatiou was conducted by Mr. Wilson, trus- tee, who congratalared the scholars at the Rroeress they bad made during the past year. be school Was examined in all the brauches taught in schools of this grade, viz:—Reading, spelling dictation, writing, singing, &c. in spelling the scholars of the first class were a little slow in speaking up, but what they lacked in this they made up in their other les- sons. The 2d and 3d classes inall the branches they had studied done much better than conid have been expected for children of such tender age. The singing by the scholars. separately and together, was very guod. Primary No.8, Second Djstrict, Miss Parker teacher.—This school is located on {th street, near P street, and has been in progress about twomonths The building is a tong two story ‘Wooden structure, hot as a furnace in summar, and equally enubject to the extreme of cold in winter. Primary No. 8, composed wholly of girls, is on the first floor, and on the second Primary No. 7 ‘The latter school is examined to-day. Owing | to the indisposi‘ionof Mr. Rhees, Miss Parker's school was examiued by Mr. Wight. Oaly Teading, writing aud elementary arithmetic are taughtin this school. The scholars, how - ever, exuibited encouraging improvement in their stacies, some who never attended school previous te the establishment of this, two months ago, reading und spelling remarkably Well. At tae couclusion of the examination in their studies, the scholars sang several Pieces With great spirit, and after exercises in gym- nastics the school was dismissed. There are sixty-three names on the roils of this school, fifty-six of whom were present vesterday. The children all mauifested much interest in their school, &nd promise rapid advancement io their studies Noue of the pareats of the chil- dren were present the only visitors being a teacher of & neighboring school and the reporter of the Star Such indifference on the part of parents not only indicates a total lack of ap- preciation of the school privileges afforded by ihe city, but is calculated to lessen the interest of the cbildren in their studies. Primary No.7, Third District, kept in the basement of the New Jerusalem Church north of the Uapitol, in a room illy adapted for school purposes, was examined by Mr. Hitz. in the presence of a few of the friends of the Pugiis There were fifty-six scholars present and five absent, (three of whom were sick ) The usual studies were gone over, and con- siderable improvement was shown by the scholars. The reading and spelling or the third class, which at the first of the year was the A, B, © class was very considerable. In mental arithmetic the second class was ver: good and =pelling fair. The first class speli- ing Was very fair, and the dictation exercises tolerable. Some of the scholars are large enough to be in the grammar schools, and have evidently been sadly neglected in their early training The teacher has had hard work with such material, but her labors have not been in vain, she, during her first year, (hay- ing \aken the schow! in September last, ) having qualified her firet class tor transfer, and ad- | wanced all her scholars proportionately, her | first A, B, C class now being able to read and spejl most creditably. REINSTaATED.—Lieutenant Colonel Robert ‘Which this school 1s kept is of the one-story shanty order of architecture, as is the case ‘with most of the schools of this grade in the Fourth District. The interior, however, is more attractive than the exterior; the room be- ing tidily kept and amply whitewashed, and ‘was on this occasion made inviting by floral adornments The walls being pierced with doors and windows opposite euch other, the ventilatien is better than in many of the school rooms of its size. Firty-seven of the sixty scholars belonging to the school were present yesterday. As usual in the Fourth Dis- trict, in which much int rest is felt in school matters, there was a goodly attendance ot arents and friends of the pupiis. The chool was examined very thoroughly by Mr. Holmead, trustee, and acquitted itseif well, and with about average credit in the various branches taught. Miss Bailey, who is agraduate from Miss Amidon’s ex- cellent school, seems to have & good idea of government, and altogether gives promise of meking a successfol teacher. —.__—_. Mr. Clephane desired the Justice to decide as to whetherhe had jurisdiction ta a case con- cerning the collection of Internal Revenue. According to the law such cases are to be tried only in a United States Court, and not by any 4 magistrate, or even Uircuit Voart. Mr. Miller demanded a jury trial, having previously notified the Justice of his desire to “have it tried by a jury.
