Detective King, in the Aldermens’ Ch City Hall The Taarged ite ce The parties are charged with riot And shooting @ soldier named Costello, at the corner of Hstreetand Delaware avenue, on the 13th May last. Mr. Wilson appeared for the prosecution, and Messrs. Fendall, Morris 8nd Davis for the defense. Join Rainey sworn. Testified that he lives atthe corner of H streetand Delaware ave- mhue; keeps a saloon there; May the 13th wit- ness had been down town purchasing goods tor the house, and got back about six o’clock P.M. Was home ten or fifteen minutes when King, Boyle, Cronin, Godley, and a young man named James Bush drove up to the door, on Delaware ayenue, leading to the bar. When they entered witness was standing on the floor. ‘They walked up to the bar, and witness went behind the bar. The hack driver came in with them. They called for something to drink: can'tsay if any drank except King, he drank aie Witness received no pay, and thinks Cronin ordered the drinks. ing and Oronin then turned round to the man Ellis, who was Sitting on a chair near the oyster box reading & paper. King and Cronin took hold of him and jerked him off the chair; witness heard no Temarks made by them. They began seareh- ing Ellis's breast, &c. Ellis remarked that if they wanted to search him they might take him to the City Hall or guardhonse and go through him, as a public bar room was no place to do it. King remarked, “Put the hand- cuffs on the d—d s—n of a b—hand shoot him.” Cronin drew his revolver and putit to Ellis’s Read and eaid, ‘Now, you s—n of a b—h, your life isin my hands.” At that time they had pulled about the room. King, Boyle, Cronin and Ellis were scuffling. At that time Costello And another soldier named Bradley ran into the room by the H street door. Costello got mong them and tried to separate them. Cro- nin got hold of Costello and shoved him against the partition; the others were around. Bush ‘was trying tomake peace; Cestellosaid nothing to Cronin; Cronin put the pistol to the side of Costelic’s head and fired, the ball passed into the partition of the liquor room. Cronin re- marked, “Now, you d—d Yankee s—n of a yb—h, take that.” Witness’s wife ran into the room from the back room, havinga baby in her arms, and screamed for witness to come out; King struck at her with a billy; a little girl followed her mother in. and King took her by the arm and threw out of the back door to the platform. Boyle put the nippers on Costello and dragged him out of the door on Delaware ayenue. Costello was so beat and kicked he could hardly stard. They put him in the car- riage. witness saw Boyle kick at him. King had hold of Shuren, the barkeeper, and put him in the hack; saw nobody strike Costello. ‘When the shot was fired witness was four or five feet from the party and did nothing atall during the whole time Mr, Shuren testified that he was barkeeper at Rainey’s. On the occasion of this case he entered the room fromthe back yard. Saw a Sergeant of police nolding 4 revolver to Ellis's face. John Cronin was in the.act of shoot- ing Ellis and witness threw the pistol off with his rigbtarm. They were standing near the back door toward the passage. Boyle was mear with a billy. King was near. King caught holdof witness, when he attempted to save Ellis. Witness remarked. “For Christ's to keep? Atis the muss aboat,” and hegeedshens Cpe en ne . e msn he wanted. Withee tepiness was the the fuss and get Ellis ont of the way, but King stuck to bim, and Boyle strack him with a billy. Witness heard Costello’s voice before hesaw him, He called out, “For Cnrist’s sake it is pot fair for all to pitch on one man. Cro- nim replied, ‘ You Yankee son of a b—h, what brought you here. I'l soon put you away trom here.” These were the words. Witness saw Cronim present a revolver at Costello. ‘Witness threw it off. Cronin madea second at- ztempt. Witness heard the pistol, saw the smoke, and Costello fell. Cronin said «You Yankee son of a b—h, take that now,” and struck down on him with a pistol. King ‘and Boyle kicked Costello. Oronin raised the revolver to strike a second time. Witness Kicked it, and saw the revolving part rollon the floor and Cronin have the stock in his hand. Boyle put a fixture on Costello’s hands, and dragged him out to the carriage. King dragged witness out to the carriage. Witness knew Cronin was a policeman: didnt know Boyle: saw Godiey strike with a billy. When the pistol fired it was a yard or three quarters of a yard trom Costelio’s head. The counsel agreed to submit the case on the evidence heard, without examining any for the defense; and the Justices reserved their judgment until to-day. pees SSS THz Great MARCH BY RAILROAD—The movement of troops over the Baltimore and Obio Rallroad is one of great magnitude, and is probably the greatest movement of the kind ever made inthe world. The celerity with which troops are shipped and sent rejoicing bomewards is really wonderful, when we no- tice that all the trains on the road both to Bal- timore and the West, including the tonnage trains, are not the least retarded, but are run- ning on their accustomed time. To the end that the troops should be forwarded with as little delay as possible, a few days previous to the movement President Garre't and Master of Transportation Smith made the necessary arrangements in relation tothe cars, and so well have beon their directions carried ont that the agent here, Mr. George S. Koontz, who ts the master mind of the transportation, has had at all times the requisite number of cars at his command, which enables him and his asics, Messrs. Collins, Hapsiey and Thompson, with Messrs. W. J Stephenson, H. P. Gilbert and Jos. Kingsley, at the Governmert ware- house, to get the trains off on time. The par- ties named have been fully up to their du- ties, working night and day, and the efficiency with which the work has been done, entitles these gentlemen to the thanks of the soldiers and the soldiers triends throughout the coun- try. Capt. Benj. Burton, A.(..M., sad his clerks, who make out the necessary papers. richly deserve the thanks of the troops, they having been constantly at work since the great movement commenced (May 3st), and seem- ingly they never tire. Tn connection with this movement the Sol- diers* Rest, in charge of Captain Camp, which affords a restirg place for suchas may be too jate to take the trains, and the Rest, where the troops are refreshed, and those who have not previously been provided receive theirrations, deserve notice. Owing to this movement a a large amount of extra work devolves upon those in the depot, who have had but little rest, but thus far so well has everything been man- aged that there has been no cause of complaint, and itis to be hoped that al! tre roads over which troope are passing have madesuch com- plete arrangement and will meet with the same success 2s the Baltimore and Ohio road. Since the Sist ult, when the great move- ment commenced, to this morning, the total number of troops who bave le't the city amounts to 79,810 men, with 2,430 horses and 1,902,500 Ibs. of Baggage. f Yesterday the following left:—ith Division, 17th Army Corps, 6,85 men; tst Me. heavy a: tillery, 295 men: Gist N Y.,6i men; 127th Ill, Sl men: 25th Wis. 453 men; Sth N.
