PuBLIC Sckoors DteaTRIBUTION OF CARDS or MeniT.—This ceremony concluded yester- Gay atternocn. The distribution took place at the west Georgetown schgols,, the attendance being excellent, notwithstanding the rain, and the exercises very interesting. These schools, primary, male and female are mnder the in- struction of Mrs. Ijams and Miss Hanna. Yegterday the distribution took place at the Montgomery street school house to the Male Grammar, Miss Emma Reed, teacher; Female Grammar,Mies Huestis, teacher; Male Pri- mary, Miss Laura Reed, teacher; Female Pri- mary, Mrs. Edmonston, teacher. @ exer- cises Were quite &s inter®Sting as on former occasions. The cards were distributed by Messrs. John Marbury. Jr. W. H. Tenney. Anthony Hyde and Dr. Barba’in. Apremium had been promised to the scl olar having the largest number of cards at this distribution. Two young ladies, Misses Mary Baker and E. McKnight exhibited an equal number, and & preminm was awarded to each. The presen- tation was made by Mr. J. W, Deeble. @7-The widow McClihtock, the great oil Millionaire, when she died left her property to her adopted son Johnny Steele, a teamster. He immediately dropped the lines and put on good clothes, and led a very diseolute life all over thecountry. For some time, it is said he ‘went round with & bard of minstrels. Walk- ing up Broadway, one day, he saw & pair ot Hove horses and carriage. He stopped the driver, and inquired how much he hea lel the whole rig The driver said $12,000. = upon “Johnny” bauled out the amount, and banding ittothe driver jumped in for a ride. Having had ride enough, and taking & fancy to the driver, he made him’a present of his recent purchase. At another time he is said to have purchased the Continental Hotei in Phitadel- ia, im an extravagant freak. He gambled with John Morrissey, and paid $600,000, it is said, for the Aatausement, Mr. M.’s experience being too extensive for him. He has had nu- merous escapes from losing his too easily got- ten wealth, by New York and Philadelphia sharpers. Where he is just now no one seems toknow. Some say he is dead, but he will probably turn up some day—perhaps again as teamster. —____ 7A number of Russian soldiers and Polish —— meeting near Conin, 8 cossack boasted @ was such & good shot that he coald strike & m&n’s capwithont touching the head. A pea- sant accepted the challenge, but the moment the ball struck he fell dead. The soldier was condemned to a month’s imprisonment for his impradence. In his defence he aileged that | the fault was the peasant’s, and to prove it, he ‘would repeat the experiment with the judge | Binnself.
