The New Haven Journal of the icth givesan secount of the movement of @ suspicious indl- ‘vidual in that locality, who, it is believed, had some connection with the ation. The Journaleays. hat on the Sunday after the death Of the President, 2 man whose name was after- ‘ward discovered to be Lemos, stopped at the Central Hotel in this city. He appeared to be about thirty years of age, was abont five feet seven inches in height, of light complexion. hed light and very bushy hair, a hawked-shnaped pore, gray eyes, * heavy scar on the right side ef bis neck, and another on, the face. s¥P! ‘a to have been Gk cuts; wis well dressed, an Was taken for a German Jew. Theman begged hard to be re- leased, and produced and offered as an induce- ment a gold watch, worth fifty dollars, which ‘was accepted, and he was suffered to go at lib- erty. On being released, he told the hotel pro- rietor he had lefta carpet bag at the hotel, which he desired to be sent to one Myers, at Southport. The carpet-bag was given to the police, who, on obtaining it, examined i's contents and found that it contained some very singular articles, which at once made turther acquaint- ance with therunaway seem highly desirable. There was found, first, a cart de visite of a Jady, apparently about thirty-five years of age, pisin-loomicg, rather fleshy, and wearing a stylish dress. This photograph was contained in an envelope, and on the back of the photo- graph was written these words: * Meet me in Washington on the 10th. J. W. Boorn.” On comparing this signature with those made by Booth on the booksof the New Haven House, it was found to be genuine. There were also found a large number of suspicious papers, among them two passes, signed by H. S. Parsons, Generel Sheridan's Adjutant General, ore ef which bore date De- ember 8, 1664, and was to permit M. Lemos, a scout, to pass ont of the lines and return; while the other bore daie December 9, and was to rmit M. Lemos, ascout, to pass eut of the ines with two men and lead horses, to Char- Jotteeburg and return. The police immediately started in pursuit in all directions, but after two weeks of unremit- ting search, were cempelied to give it up. About two weeks stter the man left the city, B soldier called at the Provost Marshal’s office and aeked for transportation home, saying that be was a scout in Sheridan's army. On being geked if he knewa scout by the name of Lemos, he rephed that he gueseed he ought to, for he had spent two months in prison with himin Richmond. He then gayeacorrect description ofthe man. It is thought, judging from the other facis, that this man becamea Unionscout dn order the more readily to accomplish a treacherous purpose, Arrest of Other Couspirators. The Richmond correspondent of the New York Herald writes, May 24th: James A Seddon, ex-rebel Secretary of War, ‘was arrested at his home in this State, and. I believe,in this county (Henrico), yesterday, and ‘was brought gto this city last evening, and cay pc pe on board the gunboat ‘whereon R. M. T. Hunter is confined. Seddun ‘Was brought in under an escort of cavaliry, and was astonished at both the time and method of bis arrest. He was engaged in cultivating his farm at the moment of his arrest. Judge Jobn A. Campbell was arrested at his residence in this city, and after reporting to or General Ord, was consigned to the gun- Doat with the rest. He was also surprised at Bis arrest, expecting immunity by reason of his interviews with the late President, Major General Weitze} snd other distinguished Union gentlemen ard generals. He is, now, however, im custody, trom whence he will not soon emerge. Extra Billy Smith will, no doubt, soon be in the ds of the United States authorities, who are making & stout pursuit of him. This morning, though it is a very early hour when I commit this despatch to the messenger, it is said and believed that General Lee will be im custody within forty-eight hours. General Lee wasin the cityso late as eleven o’clock Jast evening. F neial. The stock market in New York continues extremely dull, and is in a condition which appears to present no inducement to the pub- lic to either buy ar sell; and the brokers being unable to get up alittle excitement, even for their own TU piperp asteat The prevailing dull- mess extends to governments. Tne Miscellaneous list was irregular. Gold has taken a sbarp downward turn. The demand for expert is less active. and, owing to the withdrawal of orders for considerable amounts for shipment, the price is weak. Money is in rather more demand from street borrowers. The supply on call continues abundant at 5 T cent, though some are asking 6 per cent. ‘oreign exchange is lessactive. The advance in gold has checked the demand, and import- ers are more disposed to take the chance ofa Yeturn of gold to 130, anda decline in the rate of exchange.
