Dr. Towles was called to ts chair, and Mr. Frank Stitt acted as secre- Ty. Mr. T. G. Clayton moved the appointment of & committee of five to select suitable candi- dates, And report the same to the meeting for ratification Mr. Henry Lyles opposed the appointment of a committee, as he did not think the meeting dike those held by uhe citizens of the Fourth Ward in olden times. He was in favor of an Adjournment until Friday night, in order to allow time to canvass the ward for suitable candidates. Mr. T.B Brown also opposed the gyi ment of a committee on nominations. e was an favor of calling upon candidates through | the papers. Mr. J. E. Norris agreed with Mr. Brewn, as he did not see the necessity of this meeting Mominating candidates. He did’nt care how many candidates were placed in the fleld, for he would nominate his own ana vote for the best man. The vote was then taken on Mr. Clayton’s Motion to appoint & cemmittee to nominate candidates, and was decided to have been ‘yoted down. ( A motion was here made to adjourn, amid “cries of ‘no, no;” “go into nomination,” &c. Considerable confusion now existed in the room, but finally the motion to adjourn was yoted down. Mr. T. G. Clayton advanced to the speaker’s platform, and remarked that he thought this “was to bea meeting of the citizensof the Fourth “Ward to nominate candidates, and that all party prejudices had been thrown aside. He thovght an opportunity would be afforded all to express their preference, but it was evident that the meeting was forestalled, as tickets had been prepared and passed around. Mr.©. then ee to read a printed ticket, and when e had concluded a& motion was made to adopt ait, which 1 met with some opposition. Mr. R.S. Davis said it was quite evident that the meeting had been forestalled from the sen- timent expressed and what had been seen here to-night. He was opposed to five or six men going into a back room and preparing a ticket, “which they now attempt to force upon this meeting. He was of the opinion that the days of- dark lanterns had ceased, (several yoices— «* That's so,”] butif the meeting chosed to en- dorse a ticket which had been nominated over @ bettle of whisky in a back room they could do so. Mr. Norris wanted to know who got up the ticket, as they could not gonge it down his throat. Me would tell the gentleman that it ‘would Dot do, as he could get enough to sweep the ticket out of existence. He did not oppose the gentlemen named, but the modus operandi of eee them. Mr. F. Hurley thought the meeting a ha one, but was opposed to all fore- stalling. He would vote for Asbury Lioyd; ‘was in favor of nominating a ticket opposed to all cliques, and would not vote for any man ‘who was not for the Government at all times. Mr. Davis moved that the meeting go into the nomination of candidates one at a time. At this point the greatest confusion existed in the room, and several motions were made to urn, which were voted down uiet haying been restored, the meeting pro- ceeded to the selection of candidates. Mr. Asbury Lloyd was placed in nomination for Alderman, and was by acclamation decided zo be the choice of the meeting. Candidates for the Common Council were then placed in nomination, when the names of the following gentlemen were presented :—W. W. Moore, Elijah Edmonston, W. H. Nally, R.S. Davis, W.H. Johnson, W.H. Baldwin, os 4 Anderson, Thomas Young, and M. G. ory It was decided that the yote should be taken by ballot, and the three receiving the highest number of yotes should be declared duly nomi- nated. The vote having been taken and counted, the tellers announced the following as the result: Ww. Ww. Moore, 115; Elijah Ed: ee 128; R. BS. Davis C. H. Anderson H. Nally, 19, W.H Scasacasy 7; W.H. Bajawine ; Thos. Young, 1; M. G. Emory. 2. The Chair declared W. W. Moore, Elijah Edmonston, and R. S. Davis to be the choice of the meeting tor Common Couneil, they having received the highest number of votes cast. Thomas Burch, Samuel Wise and Jacob Geiger were placed in nomination for assessor. Mr. Burch received 9 votes, Mr. Wise, 35 and Mr. Geiger 3. w. . Demaine, Wm. Forsyth and P. H. Donegan were nominated for surveyor. The ‘vote was taken riva voce, and the Chair decided Mr. Donegan to be the choice of the meeting. The nominations were then made unanimons, and Wm. Dixon ratified as the nominee for collector and Samuel Douglass for register. Mr. Donegan was called on for & speech, When that gentleman came forward and thanked the meeting for the honor conferred wpon him, and defined his position as an earn- est supporter of the government, and opposed to allrebels ana their sympathizers.
