THE EVENING STAR. TELEGRAPHIO NEWS. FROM NASHVILLE. Geverner B Georgia, a Pri Move: ef Jeif. Davis. New York, May 16—The Nashville special correspondent of the Times says: Brown, the late Rebel Governor of Georgia. was brought here last night as a prisoner, and jeft this morning for Louisville. Jeff. Davis is under a strong guard, and will arriye bere (Nashville) on Thursday evening. Every body of regular rebel soldiers and guerrilla organization in this State and North Csrolina has given up to come in under Gene- ral Thomas’ late order. Thonsands of rebel soldiers Rave arrived bere and taken the oath, including the re- donbtabl ick McCann. ‘Near! Yall ‘the hospitals are cleaned out,and thousands of Governmentemployees are being cischarged. The Reported Killing of Forrest. LovisviLtk, May 16—Major General "Thomas arrived here this evening, en route to Wasbington. Governor Brown, of Georgia, arrived this morning and leftthisp.m. He was arrested on the night of the 9th, at the Executive man- sion, at Milledgeville, by Captain Kneeland and Lientenant Bayard, and preceeds to Washington under charge of the latter. The Nashville Press learns that General Forrest was xilled by Captain Walker, of the rebel army, in revenge for the shooting of his son mer— FROM EUROPE. Queen Victoria on the Assassination. New York, May 16.—The steamer Cuba, from Liverpool on the 6th, and ({nueenstown on the 7th, has arrived here. Consols closed on Tuesday at 90 4.890% ;5-20's 63K 3X. ne London Times has a friendly and hope- ful editorial upon the speeches of Sir F. Bruce and President Johnson, which itregards asa fresh evidence of amity. It says President Jobnson’s language is pacific and statesman- like, and will meet with aresponse in England. The Times hopes that the idle words of prov- ocation which have been employed by irre- sponsible persons may be buried in the grave of Mr. Lincoln. The (Queen’s response to the address from Parliament says she entirely participates in the sentiments addressed to her on the assassi- ration, and she has given directions to the minister at Washington to make known the feelings entertained by Parliament, in com- mon with herself and the whole people. FROM NORTH CAROLINA. Effect of Gen. Schofield’s Order. Grenspnoro’, N.C., May 14.—General Scho- field’s order, declaring the slaves in this State free, created great consternation, as the labor of the slayes was wanted to pat in the spring crops, and the slaves refused to work, claim- ing that their former masters owed them a living. Major General Cox, of the 23d corps, however, has reassured the people by telling them that the slaves will be obliged to work and support themselves. Hon. John A.Gilmerhas commenced di- viding bis lands up among his slaves, fur- nishing them facilities to work with. Other masters will follow the example. General Schofield’s course gives universal satisfac- ton. FROM MEXICO, Matamoras Threatened by the Liberals. Sr. Lovis, May 16.—airg deepatches say that General Negrete, with 4,500 Liberal troops, appeared before Matamoras on the 29th ulti- mo, and demanded its surrender, which was refased. The Imperialists marched out to meet them, and a cavalry fightensued. Busi- ness was suspended in Matamoras and the streets barricaded in expectation of an attack, butall was quiet on the evening ofthe 2d. The custom-house officers fled from Browns- ville, and the wealthy citizens moved all their yaluables from the same place. Seven hundred troops arrived at the mouth of the Bio Grande on the 2d, and left for the interior the next day. A report reached Bag- dad on the ith thatthe Liberals were in full retreat. ™M ee of Carpet: All kinds of carpets will wear much longer if fine straw be spread evenly on the floor, about half an inch thick, before they are fastened down. When they lie on the bare floor, the gritty dust works through them to the floor, and as they are pressed down on and among it, they will be worn out much more than when kept up fromit withstraw. Toaid in drawing carpets up ciose to the base board, preparatory to nailing them, drives or 10 small nails into a piece of wood, allowing them to extend about tnree-eightsof an inch beyond the surface, similar to & weaver’s stretcher, and file them toasharp point. With such an instrument as this, having @ long handle, one person can thrust the side of thecarpet up close to the base board, and hold it with ease, till it is nailed. There is some science also in the manner of sweeping carpets correctiy. Instead of inclining the handle of the broom forward and rolling the dirt along and press- ing t1 into the carpet, by bearing down on the broom, the handle shonid be held nearly erect, 8nd the dirt brushed along, by toushing the carpet very lightly. In this way bot broom | and carpet will be worn less, and the sweep- ing be done better.—American Ajriculturist. Tue Cuvscu QUESTION IN THE DIOCESE OF | Virorsia—We clip the following from the Petersburg Express : BisHor Jouns’ ApDREss.—Bishop Johns hes issued the following address to the clergy and iaity of his diocese. It will beread with interest: . To the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese of Vir- ginia:—The issue of the painful conflict through which we have passed and which leaves the Commonwealth under the juris- diction of the United States, renders very clear the course proper for us te pursue. Obedience to “the powers that be” « for conscience’ sake” is the duty of all who profess to call themselves christicns. And as such are also enjoined to make prayer for their rulers, it is incumbent upon them to implore the blessings of Almighty God on those in authority over them. For this purpose the form to which we had been long accustomed is for obvious reasons most advisable. There- | tore, I do not hesitate to recommend its use in public worship by the gocd people of this diocese, and express the hope that they will be true and faithful toits spiritin ali their | actions and intercourse with the fellow-citi- | zens—tnat the resumed civil relations may be happily maintained and rebound to tne glory ot God and the temporal and spiritual welfare of the nation.
