Davis re taheoun Oharlotte on the 23d wlt., and is be- Heved to have gone to Augusta. He was ac- eompanied by an escort of not jess than a divi- zion of Wheeler's cavalry. Before leaving Greensboto, Davis erdered some oi Wheeter’s nd many officers in ether commands, to a the amounts due them in gold. They ‘were accordingly so paid. DaNvitLE, May 2.—Jeff. Davis left this place for Greensboro immediately after tne surrenderot Lee's army. During the time he remained in Danville it Is — he liquidsted afew of the rebel fee hon paying outspecie for that purpose. = ang in Greensboro, however, he refused to part with a single dollar. He slep: in o railroad car, and none of the inhabitants showed him any attention. The only member of his Cabi- Betto whom they were civil was Mr. Tren- Bolm, Sacretary of the rebel Treasury. The citizens of Greensboro even refused to lend Jeff. Dayisa mattress to sleep on, and in many other wave showed him that his presence was not desired among them. Kzy West, Fia., May 1.—Wild stories are sold of Jeff. Davis being on the coast line or Florida, waitmg an opportunity toescape. It is not Impossible bu! not very probable. Pub- lic opinion here takes the direction that he may be brought into Key Weet, tried and exe- euted here. jFrom the Raleigh Progress, May J.} Itis reported that Jefferson Davis crossed the Mississippi at Tinker’s Bend, on the night oi the isth instant. We doubt this statement. & member of the Senior Reserves, a citizen of Wake county, informs us that on the izth of April Jefferson Davis crossed the Yadkin, in ans State, six miles this side of Salisbury, at- tended by a considerable force of infantry and cayalry. Ii this be so—and we are in- clined to believe ii—he could not possiby have reached the Mississippi by the !6th. Oar in- formant states that the eavairy forded the Yadkin, the infantry and wagon train crossed | on the bake es and Davis bimself was ferried over inafiat. Mrs. Davis was with him ina carriage. The wagons, itis said, contain hig treasure of gold and silver. Thesoldiers who were with bim were picked men, of known and desperate coerage, and it is said that Davis had promised them each $250 in goid, if they would see him safe in Texas. Our informant heard nothing of Benjamin or other members of the Cabinet. This was on the 12th of April. On the ivth General Stoneman occnpied Salisbury; and of course Dayis passed through the latter place, ornear it, before Stoneman reached it. Our opinion is that the great sectional imposter and Tobber has struck for the seacoast, and that his purpose is to make his escape ina emall yes- sehto some of the West Indialslands He may have been niming for (zeorgetown, N. C. {From the Raleigh Progress, May : From officers of the army who wer: at Greensboro on the ifith ult., we learn the fol- lowing relative to the movements and where- abouts of the arch-traitor Jeff. Davis. On the 25th Davis left Charlotte, bound for ‘Texas, escorted by about three thousand cay- airy, under General Echols and Basil Duke. The men were mostly Kentuckians and Tex- ans. Davis made aspeech in Charlotte before leaving, in which he promised to have a larger army in the Held than ever before very soon. He had with him a train of about twenty wagons. His escort were mere desperadoes and adventurers—many of whom were for- merly under John Morgan. On the v#th they burned the navy-yard, ransacked the stores and dwellings, ana committed various ont- rages on the property and persons of the in- habitants. | | General Stopeman with his cavalry com- | mand, was ten miles from Charlotte, his pickets being om the banks of the Catawba Tiver. It was the opinion of all the people that he could have captured the whole command, ifnot Davis himself, if he had attacked. It may be that he will fall intothe hands of Gene- ral Wilson’s cavalry force yet; though the chances of his getting through tothe Missis- sippl are good. FROM VICKSBURG. Expirationel Truce—More Victims of the Suit: Found. ©atno, May 7.—The Vicksburg Herald says the armistice between General Dana and Gen- eral Hodges wouid end on May 3, and hostil- ities may be resumed at any moment. Rebel paroled prisoners are arriving at Vicksburg. Many bodies from the wreck of the steamer |~ Sultana are floatingin theriver. Forty have been brought ashore and buried in the Sol- diers’ Cemetery, at Memphis. None haye been identified. The Mobile and Ohio railroad has been com. pelted to Moscow, and trains are running. Telegraphic communication has been re. sumed between Cairo and Nashville. after a suspension of nearly & year owing to guerilla operaions. THE INCENDIARY PLOT. Attempt te Burn Philadelphia—Design te Fire the State Magazine. PYILADRELPUTA, May >.—Ferney’s Press has | obtained important information regarding the | Tecent plot to burn Philadelphia, disclosing the fact that on Wednesday night previous to the night when the city was to be burnt, a large barn, located within fifty State magazine, situated near Point Breeze, ‘was fired by an incendiary, but the flames were fortunately extinguished. The maga- ards of the | vine contaims nearly 160 tons of powder. part- | ly belonging to the United States. The Legislature hasenacted a law for the | yemoval of the magazine, buithe new build- | Ing is not erected, and the magazine remains ‘ Within two miles of the ci vy without & guard to protect it. From the Pacif st. Saw Feancisco, May }.—Advices from Salt Lake say the Mormon authorities haye taken action toward opening a route tothe head of navigation cn the Colorado river. Stock has also been taken to build a line of telegraph on this route, to extend to Prescott, the capital of Arizona, where it will connect with the line from Calitornia. We have never seen or had any kuowledge in any wise of him or them, and he has never written us a note, or sought an interview with us, GrorGe N.Sanpers, | BEVERLY TuckER. Beverly Yucker’s Gratuitous Imperti- nence—He Thinks President Johnson's Procla: ma Pretext for Difficulty with Canada. From the Toronto Globe, My 5.} Our Montreal correspondence this morning contains the statement that Beverly Tucker, one of the noted six for whose arrest such tempting rewards are offered, has issued a manifesto “to the people of Canada,” stoutly denying his complicity in the murder of the Jate President. His assertion may or may not be correct, just as the information on which President Johnson based his proclamation may or may not be well founded. He is at liberty to assert his innocence to his heart's content; but he might have spared himself the trouble of rushing into gratuitous conjecture about the motives ofthe Washington Government. His theory that the proclamation has been got up in order to constitute a pretext for trouble with Canada is a miserably weak invention—too transparant a dodge to serve his purpose. We have nc more right to assume that than to be- lieve that Beverly Tutker is guilty of the charge attributed to him. The relations be- tween Canada and the United States are ofa most satisfactory kind, as we hope they may ever continue to be, and it isa piece of gratuit- ous impertinence in Tucker to attempt to stir up public feeling here by unfounded imputa- tions dictated by the dilemma in which he finds himeelt. A Montreal Opinion of the President's Proclamation. | From the Montreal Gazette, May 5.) The proclamation by President Johnson, which came by our midnight despatches and appeared in our last impression, created a profound sensation. It might well do so. It purports to be based on “evidence in the Bu- reau of Military Justice.” It is difficnit te con- ceive that any civilized Government could issue such @ proclamation without good evi- gence; and the presumption is, the “Military Bureau” has affidavits on which to base it. But on the other hand, it will be clear to the ‘whole world that the criminality attributed to President Davis is inconsistent with the whole career of his life and Government, and he can- not be supposed to have been so blind &s not to see that to procure or incitesuch a deed as that done, and that attempted at Washington, would consign his name, which stands fair before all mankind, to eternal infamy. And for what! Noearthly good that the witof man can imagine. In fact, to repeat Mr. Gerritt Smith’s word, the suspicion is “insane.” No- thing elcrt of positive proof conld induce im- partial.men to believe in the statements of the proclamation, The evidence of spies, or such Persons as these reported to be arrested, would not be enough. If Mr. Bavis could be proved to be guilty of such a crime as that imputed to bim, then no term of infamy would be too strong with which to brand him; but if he cannot be £0 proved, it must be said that no civilized Government was ever before guilty of so infamous a libel. News of Jeff. Davis. Rawzicn, N C., May 1.—Lieut. Colonet Par- | ker, of the 4th New Hampshire, captured by | Wheeler’s cavalry, near Magnolia, about three | weeks since, has just returned, having been aroled at Greensboro’ on the 16th ultimo, by jenuregard. (Quartermaster Tilton, ot the same regiment, captured @bent the same time, also returned this morning. He was in Charlotte April 25. Jeff. Davis left there on that day, bound for Texas, escorted by a detachment of cavalry under General Echols and Basil Duke. They numbered about 3,000, and had with them a train of about twenty wagons. FROM FLORIDA. Mallory Net Captured—News from Pensa- cola te April 29. The gunboat Florida, Volunteer Lieutenant Commander William Budd, arrived at the Brooklyn Navy-yard on Saturday from New Orleans, via Pensacola and Key West. She sailed from Pensocola on the 2%%h ultimo, at ex-Secretary Mallory, of the late rebel navy, existed among either the navy or army Officers | atthat place. 1t was rumored there that he | had been seen in Pensacola, and had sncceeded | in effecting an exit trom the country in an | English schooner, but the report could not be traced to any responsible source. It was very | certain that he had not given himself up to | Captain Gibson, ofthe frigate Potomac, as that gentleman knew nothing of him further than | the above rumor circulating in the town. Ic | is more than likely that the pugnacious secre. | tary is not far from Jeff. Davis, to whose tor- | tune he will probably attach his own. Mr. | Mailory’s intimate acquaintance with Florida | and its innumerable harbors and rivers, fre- | quented by small blockade-running sloops, is fayorable to his escape, and we need not be surprised (0 learn at any moment that he has safely reached Havana or Nassau. The only hope of bis capture must be placed in our blockaders of the EastGuli squadron. It will | do noharm now to announce that General Gillmore, at an early moment, despatched an officer of his staff from Hilton Head to Key West, to vottyi the authorities of the situation ot affairs afterthe evacuation of Richmond, and to suggest certain steps which would close all avenues ef egress, which can he | covered by such force as the navy and army | at that point haye at their disposal.
