The details of the case,as we gathered them, were as follows: & party of company D, 9th Veteran Reserve Corps, were gamboling or wrestling near the statue, and one of them struck against a col- ored man, who asked him what he meant by it, and told him he had better not do so again. The soldier replied it was merely on accident, butif he did not like it, to make the most of it, and with this the negre struck him and started uff to run, followed by the comrades of the Struck soldier, who, atevery chance they could et, dealt the negroa blow. On getting some little distance outside the Qircle, 2 colonel ofthe Ninth army corps, whose name we could rot learn, took the negro under his pro- tection, and ordered the pursuing party not to strike him. k The crowd fell back and a guard of tne th ‘Veteran Reserve Corps came up and took the Begro in charge, and conducted him to the guard-honse. We did not hear of the arrest of either of the soldiers who had been engaged in beating the negro. The arrest of the negro appears to bave been for the purpose of protecting him. The soldiers are well known, and their aetion in the affair will probably be investigated. a Sviewz.—A bout six o'clock yesterday atter- oon, August Meyer, a German, jumped from the third stcry window of Mrs. Kummer's res- idence, 111 Seventh street, where he had been rooming for over three years past, and falling upon the pavement, his skull was crushed in, Bnd instantly killed. His left leg was also broken above the knee, as is supposed by Striking the cornice over the first story. In falling he was near striking some persons passing at the time. He was taken up to his room by some of the Fourth Ward police, who remained in charge during the night. On an examination of the room a razor, the biade of which wA&s broken, was found, together with a broken bottle, and the bed, floor and table were covered with blood. It is thought the deceased attempted suicide by cutting through his left wrist—leaving the hand hanging by the skin— for the purpose of bleeding to death, but the pain becoming too great he determined to end his existence at once, and jumped out ef the ‘window, as above stated. He was aman of from 15 to 50 years of age, and kept a cigar and tobacco establishment over Wilson’s, 327 Penn- Sylvania avenue. He is said to have been a man of cousiderable intelligence. Coroner Woodward held an inquest this Morning, when a verdict was returned stating the above facts; finding it to be acase of suicide. ge RecErvine Sroren Money.—A clerk in the store of Mr. Miller, On ‘ith street, between E and F streets, was arrested by Justice Miller, on Friday last, on the charge of receiving three stolen $2.50 gold pieces. The facts leading to his arrest are as follows: A colored boy in the employ of Justice Miller stole the above amount of money from one of the gentlemen boarding at Justice Miller,s residence, and, not knowing their value, (he thinking they were pernies,) ‘went to Mr. Miller’s store and purchased a marble, tor payment of which he tendered the clerk the gold pieces and left the store. Sub- Bequently the boy, on being questioned, con- fessed his guilt and gave information as to the manner in which he disposed of the money. Justice Miller nad an interview with the clerk, trom whom he received several false state- Ments in regard tothe matter. The clerk was Brrested by the Justice and brought before Justice Thompson by whom he was committed to jail to await an investigation to-day. HomicipE.—On Saturday, Coroner Wood- ward held an inquest on the body of Catharine Kane, aged about 23 years, in a house between M and Van streets and 3d and 4% streets. It appeared from the evidence that she nas been Staying with Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, and on Friday night Mrs. Brown drove her out of the house because she had been drinking, and beat Ber with a broomstick and her fists and choked her. She then went next deor and stopped all night, and was found dead the next morning. ‘The jury returned a verdict in accordance therewith, aud Mrs. Brown and a man named Babcock were taken in custody by officers Gib- son and Cullen.
