EDL AL THE EVENING STAR. W. D. WALLACH, Biter and Proprietor. , 5 | WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY .coc0ee-.- ++ sesoee APRIL 25, 1965. | I ee THE END OF THE ASSASSIN. ‘The manner of death of J, Wilkes Booth, though at first a disappointment to the public, hasin some respects a peculiar fitness. For sympathy with his deed he received the fiercest | e@xecration; instead of a brilliant escape to & | Tefuge of safety the officers of justice hunted | the crippled fugitive like a starved beast from | ~ 8Wamp to swamp, and at last, exhausted by exposure and hunger and paiu, the wretch died the death of acur. What may have been | the anguish of his craven soul as the toils | closed around him no man may ever know. | Whatever torture a frenzied people might have inflicted upon his carcass had he fallen ! into their hands alive hasbeen exceeded by | the misery ef his flight, and at the end a Neme. sis more terrible than the law crowned with agony the hight of his eternal infamy, i It is best that he should have passed beyond } homan passion as he did. The wretch whom | ® righteous trisl might have invested with | some degree of respectful detestation, is now | only the despised malefactor, dying the death | of a mad dog in an out-house What excitement, perhaps disturbances of the peace, has been arrested, can only be sur- ‘olsed, but that he could have been quietly | judged aud punished with the hot spirits of | the people thirsting for his blood, requires an | simost unattainable faith in human forbear- | ance. } HEROLD, David C. Meroid, the accomplice ef Booth, | better known as Dave Herold, is about twenty- | two years cf age, and for the most part of his Nife has resided in the Sixtn Ward, where, | aiter he left the school at Charlotte Hall, St. | Mary's county, Md:, he entered a drug store. His lamented father held for many years a | reeponsible position at the Navy Yard, and | none stocd higher than he in the community. | Dave, however. is nota chip of the old block ie every respect, and fe best known for his brsggadocio style and vagrant habits. He isa | great talker, and the wonder of those who know | him is that he was ever trusted by Booth with any Bnowledge of the conspiracy. Another | wonder is that Herold managed to keep Booth's secret. . Last summer he left the drug store of Dr. F. S. Waish, where he had been fora consider- Able time employed, and made some effort to obtain an appointment of Surgeon's Steward onthe Petomac Flotilla, butin this he failed. He has been out of employment since, and has lived rather fast, keeping a horse and riding out frequently, dressing in flashy style, and 411 without any visible means of support. He i Bas always beep known as a rebel sympa- | thiser. | Since his capture he has endeavored to keep upa reticence very foreign to bis nature and ! which was doubtless enjoined on him by Booth. | When left by himself in his cell it has been ob- | served, however, that his sham of stoicism ; gives way, ard he bursts into fits of conyul- ' sive weeping. Yeaterday afternoon his photograph was taxes at his place of confinement. He was dreesedin dark grey pantaloons, light blue | military veet, a faded blue jacketand black slouch hat. From the sullen frown on his countenance {t would appear that he was | rather averse to being photographed. ore TOES ASHING ION. binge pean! | Major General Augur, commanding the De- ; partment of Washington, has issued the fol ' lowing important order: ' HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF WasuH- INGTON, 22d Arm: Corps, April 26th, 1555.— General Orders, No. 56.—I. Capture and Death of Booth. Capture of Herold. ogee VERY INTERESTING DETAILS. anions aon DISPOSITIONN OF BUOTH'S REMAINS. pS THE END OF THE GREATEST CRIMI- NAL OF HISTORY. —_——___ We gave yesterday full details of the cap- tare of Booth and Herold, and the death of the former, but as anything in relation to the subject is of interest, we subjoin in more con- nected shape a history of the exciting affair, derived trom the best sources of infcrmation, Col. L. C. Baker, chief detective of ihe War Department, to whom, as stated yesterday: the credit is dae of following up the trail with euch unerring sagacity until the assassins were brought to bay, Was absent from the city at the time of the assassination, on business or importance in his line, and on his return was obliged, necessarily, to block out his operations after the ground had been pretty thorougtily occupied by hosts of keen detectives and others in pursuit, and whose inter-crossing tracks rather confused than aided parsuit. On Monday, the 21th, a detachment of the 16th New York cavalry were ordered by Gen- eral Hancock to report to Colonel L. C. Bakery special detective of the War Department. The detachment numbered 26 men, under com- mand of Lieutenant Dougherty, On the after- ncon of the same day, Colonel Baker detailed Lieutenant Colonel E. J. Conger and Lienten- aut Baker, of his detective force, to go im pur- suit of Booth, placing the aforesaid body of cavalry in their charge. At2p. m., the force left this city on the Jno, S Ide,and at i? p. m. they disembarked at Belle Plain, and took the road toward Freder- icksburg, traveling thereon three miles, and then turning in a southeasterly direction, to- ward the Rappshannock. They continued their journey through the night and the next day until noon, wken they reached Port Con- Way, on the north side of the river, opposite Port Royal. There they found. man, who, upon seeing the photographs of Booth, Herold and Sarratt. pointed out the two forimer as two men whom he was positive be had seeu the day before, at 1 p.mi,, at Port Conway. He said these men endeavored to hire bim to convey them to Bowling Green, but that they could not agree im the bargain; and that, subsequently, Herold came to him and said they had met friends and did not want his services. Their informant &’so stated that he saw a party of Confederate soldiers ¢onvey the twomen whom he had recognized by the photographs across the Tiver. Lieut. Col. Conger and Lieut. Baker decided to take thisman asa guide. They commenced croseing the river with their torces at2 p.m. Having a boat which could only carry seyen ‘atonce, they did not finish the crossing till 5 o'clock. They then proceeded half way from Port Royal to Bowling Green, where they found some women, who stated that the party of Confederate soldiers had returned on Tues- day, one less in number, and that neither of those who came hack was lame. Tuey subse- quently ascertained that the soldiers went three miles with Booth, to the house of Mr. John W. Garrett, and that Herold continued on to Bowling Green on Monday night, apparently to reconnoiter, and that he returned to Gar- rett’s Tuesday evening, a short time previous to the cavalry passing on their way to Bowling Green The pursuing force went on to Bowling Green, surrounded tha hotel there, and cap tured the ex-Cenfederate officer who had far- nisbed the horse with which Booth rode to Garrett's house. This officer told them that two men answering to the description of those they were afler were at a house they haa passed (Garrett's) on their way to Bowling Green, and told the circumstances under which he had met them. The party then returned to Garrett’, arriving there about 2 p.m., and formed a cordon about the premises, including the house and outbuildings. The elder Garrett, an old man, between sixty and seventy years of age, was then sum- moned to give information concerning the Pcsition of the criminals. He was in great trepidation, and appeared willing to tell all he Knew; but in his anxiety to narrate with prolix details the minutest particular: concerniag the advent of Booth and Herold at his place, there feemed no immediate prospect of getting at the main point at issue, the present locality of the Ascassins. One of Garrett's son: came forward at this time, and volunteered to give the required information, saying that two men, perhaps ikose they were jn pursuit of, were at that time in the barn. Young Garrett accompanied the party to the barp, which was surrounded by the men, who were placed by Col. Conger in specified pesitions, with orders not to leave them. The cordon haying been formed Lt. “*\er called to Booth that he was going t id young Garrett in to get his arms, and tha: he must surrender. The barn wa; locked on the outside at the main entrance, out there were side entrances, the doors of which were hasped on the inside and under the control of the criminals, Booth at Bay, Young Garrett unlocked the door of the barn and entered, buton approaching Booth, whe at that time appears to have been laying in the hay, the latter cailed outto Garrett “Getaway from here! Yon have betrayed me!” and Gar- rett states that Booth .uen threatened to shoot him, upon which he beat a retreat. Footh then called ont to Lieut. Baker, « What do you want!” Lieut. Baker.—“I want you!’ Beoth.—*‘Who are you, and what do you want of me Baker.—‘‘We are nere to make you a prison- er. Weknow who youare. 1 will give you five minutes tosurrender. If you do not give yourseif up in that time I will set the barr, on fire.” Booth —“That's a hard casé. Who are you? Perhaps I am being taken by my friends.” Baker.—“1t mages no difference who I am. You must surrender your arms and come ont of that.” Booth.—“I am lame, with only one leg. Give mesgeme show for my life. With@raw your men fifty yards from the door and I'll come out and fign * you.” Baker.» We did'nt come here to fight you: but to take you prisu2e?, 4nd we will take you dead or alive.” Booth Well, my brave boys, FePare B stretcher forme! I conid have pickedow Balt adozen of yowrmenif I hada wished; I 3d two or three chances toshoot you yourselt, but 1 don't wich to kill anybody.” » Baker —« Well, we've talked as long as we can shout this. If you mean to come out coat.” ‘ i At this moment an altercation was heard going om.between Booth and Hero!d. What Herold said, as he spoke tn a low, tone, cond not be Beard, but it was evideatly x0 inuma- tion te Booth of his purpose to. surrender, frem’ Booth's angry exclamation ; “You d—d coward! Wonld you leave me now! Go! go! 1 wouldn't have you stay.” Booth then called out to Lieut. Baker,— «There is @ Man inside here who wants to Ko ont.” Baker.—"Let him bring bis arms and come out” Herold then came forward ana sald, “Open the door and I'll surrender." Baker —“Hand oat your arias." Herold.—“1 haven't any.” Baker.—“You carried the carbine: bring it out.” Booth.—“‘Genatlemen, he Rasn'tany arms. I khavethem. They are mine.” Baker.—“He carried arms, and he must bring them out.” Booth.—«Upon the word And honor of a gentleman the arms are with me, and they are mine.” Col. Conger here, to cut the matter short, ordered Herold to be taken out, and he was handcuffed and tied securely to & tree in the vicinity. The Barn Fired. Col. Conger now being satisfied that Booth would not surrender and it being difficult to see his positon to get at him inside the barn, dark as it was within, determined to throw some light upon the subject, and set fire to the barn, applying a matck to & lock of hay pulled from between the cracks, agd forced back when lighted into the hay mew. As the fire mounted it lit up the Interior of the barn, bringing ont its contents and the cen- tral figure, the deytlisk criminal in fall relief. There were no animals in the barn, unless we soreckon (he bunted sayage bast at bay there. There were come agricultural implements and apile of hay which had afforded a lair tor Booth and Hereld. When the barn was fired, Booth stood in the middle of the floor, and on seeing the flame he moved to the corner where the fire was, with carbine raised as if to shoot the one who applied the matclr, but the bright light inside prevented him from discerning objects outside, though previously he bad had the advantage of his beseigers in that particu- lar. He glanced a moment at the fire as if de- bating whether it was practicable to extinguish it, and then returned and walked towards the front door of the barn. . The Fatal Shet. ~ As he reached the middle ef the Sarn, Ser- geant Corbett, who had advanced: from his position in violation of orders, fired through a crack with a cavalry pistol at Booth, who whirled in his tracks and feli to the floor. Col. Conger and Lieut. Baker rushed into the burning building and bore oat the body Of the dying criminal, laying him first on the grass in front of the barn. He partially revived and made efforts to speak. Uol. Conger placed his ear close to his mouth and understood bim to say “Tell moth- er I die for my country.” On the words being repeated to him to make sure If that was what he had said, he answered husikly “Yes.” He was then taken to the porch of the houss and a physician was sent for at Port Royal, who, on his arrival, promptly decided that his case was hopeless, Booth appeared particularly anxious that his high-sounding phrase about dying for his country should not be lost, ana repeatei to Lieut. Baker what he had said to Col. Conger, adding, “I thought I did what was for the best,” and soon ater exclaimed “Kill me! kil) me!” He then asked to be turned on his tace. He was told that it would not be possible tor him to he in that position, ana he was placed on his side. Being still restless, he was turned upon the other side. He then asked Col. Con. ger to press his hand on his throat—hard—after vy uch he mcde exertions to cough. The Death of Booth. He was now paralyzed, with no muscular Action save inthe throat. He could utter no audible words, but made motions for drink, &c., which was given him. He now began to sink rapidly and died in great physical pain, and the torments of the damned upon his soul, at ten minutes past seven, having been shot at fifteen minutes past three in the morning. Thus miserably nerishod the most atrocious criminal that the world ever knew! ‘The ball entered two inches below the left ear, coming out an inch and a half higher un_ der the opposite ear, the ball passing through the coat collar and clipping the shirt collar. It barely touched the spinal column. Booth stood sideways to Corbett when the latter fired and ins higher position, causing the ball to ascend in Sts track. After Booth's death the body was placed in & blanket and put in a farm wagon, with broken top and negro driver, aud thus con- veyed to Belle Plain Herold was secured on a horse, with his fee: ied under the horse’s belly, and taken to the same point, from whence, as we stated yester- day, they were brought up to the Navy Yard. It seems that Booth reached Garrett's on Monday, having crossed the Rappahannock at lp.m. of that day, and riding thence to Garrett’s, three miles distant. Booth gave his name to the Garretts as «« Boyd,” and ciaimed to be a Marylander. Garrett's house is some 300 yards from the road, and the burn is—or rather was—some (i) yards back of the house. The house is a tvyro- story frame, and like most Virginia houses, has a number of outbuildings, carriage-house, corn crib, &c. &c. The inmates of the house appeared to be the three Garre ts and two or three women, with several negro servants. The Remains. Very great curiesity prevails as to the dis- Position to be made of the remains of Booth, but it seems the authorities are not inclined to give his wretched carcase the honor of meeting public gaze and it will probably be deposited in whatever place promises the most atter ob- scurity for them. Yesterday a photographic view of the body was taken before it was removed from the monitor. It was then placedin an ordinary grey army blanket in which it was sewed up. A plain casket shaped box, measuring six feet by two, had been previously made in the joiners shop for-the remains, but this was not used.
