Young. of the Plumber’s Department, ’ has been placed in a position in the Yard tora trial, and a number of officers will this week examine it. Heretofore all ships galleys burnt ‘wood, but with this the hardest coal can be burned, it using about I: pounds per day, while doing the cooking, mcluding bread baking for 30 men. It possesses many ad- Vantages over theold galley, although not oc- cupying as much space, and being quite as jarge as the old fashioned ones, and the draft can be regulated so that any degree of heat can be obtsined and at whatever point the cook wishes it. The first one of this pattern made ‘was placed on the steamer Mattavcassett, about nine months ago, and the officers in their re- port toe the Bepartment, speak in the highest terms of its capacity. Should this galley be adopted by the Department, it is claimed that it will be & great saving, especially on ships on some foreign stations, whe-e wood cannot be bad, and will obviate the necessity of carrying any peculiar kind of fuel for the galley, ee Aw ExciTemMentT.—Last night the vicinity of the Kirkwood House was all excitement, on ‘account of a rumor that Boo’h was seen to entera building in that vicinity, dressed in femaleapparel. It appeared that a wellknown individual named Joe Hill, lately a watchman at one of the corals, went into Struckman’s Testaurant, on 11th street, and said that he saw Booth, dressed as a female, painted black, With a white negro wig on walking on cratches. who entered a builcing in the square. He spoke to Booth, and Booth recognized him and said, “Joe, don’tsay anything!” Struck- man called on officer Holbrook, who took Hill to the station house. As soon as he got there, the officer in charge remarked, ‘drunk again,” alluding to Hill. Sergeant Tait did not wantto lock him up, but heard his story and told him to go home and get sober. Hill left and ina very short time after his story got ont, causing some excitemont, and the Provost Guard and Detectives, in order to sift the mait-~, made a search of the square from house to house, and from roof to root. The po- lice too were ordered to the spot with the same object. An immense crowd was assembled in the streets and the avenue, and passengers were required tokeep on the pavement next to the curb. About $% o'clock the guard was withdrawn, and the crowd gradually dis- persed, it having been definitely settled that there was nothing in Hill’s story. eS ES May Bart.—The Columbia Engine Com- pany are making great preparations for their grand ball, which takes place on the Istof May, -at Navy Yard Odd Fellows’ Hall, and no doubt a fine time will be enjoyed by all par- ticipating in it.
