D., on “The Universal Yankee Nation, or the ‘White American People,” in the 6th street Presbyterian Church, near Maryland avenue. ee ee SERvicEs AT THE HEBREW SywNacocua.— Saturday morning, a! 9 o'clock, the Washing- ton Hebrew Congregation assembled at the Synagogue on Sth street, near H, to hearan Oration upon the death of the late President by Dr. Isaac Leeser, of Philadelphia, editor of the Occidenr, and the oldest Hebrew minister in this country. The morning service was conducted by ». Wiel, reader of the congregation, the choir, Consisting of ten singers under the lead of Mr. 1. L. Blout, performing some excellent music. ‘The service was closed with a prayer for the repose of the soul of the late President, and the speedy recovery of Secretary Seward and family. Dr. Leeser then proceeded with his oration. ‘Tke Woctor’s introduction was avery eloquent reference to the sad event which had induced the congregation to invite him to this city. Sach afflictions, duly considered, should in- duce all to inquire whether we should rely Upon our own strength or trust in God, whose band is seen in all events. The Doctor proceeded with a recital of the circumstances attending the destruction of the sons of Aaron, showing that the nearer we are t% triumph, the nearer we are to death; and the silent submission of Asron to the will of Ged as exemplifying the duty of the faithful under such circumstances of affliction. God watches every event to turn it to good. We dare not say that God directs the hand of the assassin or the robber; but after the work of the assassin has been accomplished, the afflict- ing event may be turned to good. Death, to the faithful, is deprived of terror; it is but the portal to eternal life. The doctrine of the res- urrection was beautifally alluded to, and illustrated by the seea planted by the husband- man, which, thouge it presents all the appear- ance of corruption, still retains the germ which will spring forth in more than its formergiory. Bearing in mind this fact, it is our duty, like Aaron, to submit with childlike simplicity to Ged's perfect judgment. When a great and useful man has fallen, we feel as if we had lost & member of our body. We should also feel our meekness and turn to God for advice. ‘When bis son bad fallen Aaron felt that God Dad justly smitten, and submitted to his will. He dia not exhibit bis grief by loud weeping Snd wailing. No sound of complaint escaped Bis lips—be was silent. The recent event is sad, but it is questionable if we donot forget to recognize the hand of an overruling Providence. The great work of the deceased was accom- Plisbed. Had he lived 1,000 years, perhaps nothing could have been added to the renown Of the great good man. That death Should lead to our improvement, ‘We should consider that in the midst of life we @rein death. Inglory near our end; in tri- umph near to death. How many have been improved by the death of Abraham Lincoln, our late President? How tew have regarded it as they ought? A tew-days aad the memory of the honored dead will be forgotten in the perplexities and Allurements of the world in which all will participate. Our grief is not like Aaron’s. Oh! that people wight value. the example of kind- ness and benevolence lett them by the onored dead. We honor in the Uhief Magistrate that which is more than the Chief Magistrate, the heart that knew how te feel, as exemplified in his efforts for peace anda restoration of har- mony among the people. If we could be as- sured that the successor of the late President would be like him, we could say his deeds live after him. The Doctor then applied bis discourse to the congregation—purity your hearts, If pare, you may look forward to death without alarm. You will meet your Father at the portals of heaven waiting to welcome his child. It your hearts are not purified, your return to meet him must be one of pain. He then alluded tothe prayer for therepese of the soul, and spoke of the belief of the Is- raelitish Church against eternal doom. Every mation is not as we, commanded to worship God after our form, but ev man of every mation who does the will of God has a part in bis favor. The Doctor declared it the religious duty ef every Israelite to love the country in which he lives, and strengthen the bands ef the rulers ‘by obedience to the laws. The honest and de- voted Jew in &ny country must be a good cit- izen. He exhorted his brethren to show to the world sincerity and uprightmess in their re- ligion, and let their neighbors see sincerity in Judahism. Pray for the blessing of peace upon this nation. Pray for the mercy of God, for this eivil strife and bloodshed must have been the result of sin. The epeaker closed with a prayer for the soul of the jate President, for his family and the Government and the nation. The dis- course was listened to with profound attention by the entire congregation. > Decegze or Divorce.—Last week, Judge Wrlie, sitting in equity, made a decree divorc- ing Margaret Hertford from bed and board with Joseph Hertford, with alimony at $50 per month, she to have control and custody of the children. The respondent filed a bill sometime since charging his wife with adultery, and subsequently the wife filed a bill, when on the last petition the evidence was taken before Commissioner Beale and alse before the Court, ehe proving cruelty, &<c., which resulted in the granting of the decree as above stated.
