WASHINGTON THEATEE.—Sharpley’s Min- strels of world-renowned fame, open at Wash- ington Tneatre te-night. Opp Fxtiow’s HaLy.—The eagerly anticipa- ted Concert fer the benefit of Mr. Robert Ball, takes place to-night at Odd Fellows’ Hall. The accomplished Signor Strini will assist, together with such amateur performers as the ‘Washington Quintette Club, Messrs. Dawson, PS es. Hodgeon, Tabler, and Ball, and Mad. Kretschmar, Miss E. B. Turner, Miss E. Danie mn Mrs. Small, J. P. Franklin, Prof. J. P. Caulfield. Prof. V. W Cauified, Harry-Sher- man, B.-U. Keyser. Two superb Chickering Grands, kindly fur- Risbed by J. F. Ellis, will be used at this con- cert to-night. ee LayiIgNcy OF POLICE MAGISTRATES.—Fre- quent comments are made among some of our most prominent citizens respecting the dis- missal, by some of our police magistrates, of parties properly arrested by the police, with Slight fines, or no fines at all. The chief com- plaints are made against the justiees of the Second, Fitih, Sixth and Seventh Precincts. This lenient method of disposing of such cases 4% discouraging to the officers making the ar- Teste, and cannot tend to lessen the number of Reece or offences against the law.—Chron- Sele. Had the writer of the above been somewhat More familiar with Washington city affairs, he would know that experience has shown that it is not the best magistrate who imposes the heaviest fines, but precisely the reverse. Some years ago® great abuse prevailed in this way trom certain magistrates colleaguing With police officers under an arrangement by ‘which the magistrate was to fine heavily for the benefit of the officer, and the officer was to throw all the business in his control into the bands of the magistrate. By this means the ;Bnscrupulous magistrates referred to, who “blistered the victims brought to their offices with the heaviest fines in their power, and ‘withont regard to evidence or justice, of course ‘id 8 flourishing business, until the abuse be- ame so flagrant as to attract attention. The public would be very sorry to see this @orrupt system imtroduced het ere again. Tae Lusson OF THE DAY. 1 Day.—Y¥ esterds y morn- ng kev. J.T. Ward, of the 9th street Metho- Protestant Church, preached a very ap- riate discourse on “he lesson of the taking for his text the 2 verse of the o7th Pasha: “Clouds and darkness are around about Him, righteousness and judgment are the habitation of His throne.” The reverend speaker referred in feeling terms to the late calamity as a mysterious one. It was mys- terious that a man in so exalted a position should be thus cut down so publicly and sud- denly, and that the assassin had made his es- cape. God who ruleth over all things permit- ted sometimes evil to be done that good may gtew out of it, and although we can scarcely Tealize that so great a calamity has befallen us and cannot fathom the ways of Providence, we should reflect on it,andas we, when one ofour intimate friends die, resobve to imitate allthat we see in them good, we should, in re- Heocting on the good man who has fallen, re- Solve to imitate his virtues. It was the daty | of the puipit throughout the length and breadth of the land to expeess the griet of the religious communities on the death of the President and speak in terms of condemnation of the assassin. He closed by referring to the successor of the late Chief Magistrate, who had so saddenly beep called upon to assume the responsibili- ues, and urged thatas christians the people should extend to him an undivided support. ————— INCENDIARY ATTEMPT TO DesTROY A PuB- Lio Senoot Hovsz.—Saturday night an at- tempt was made by some viliain to fire the public school house, corner of New York ave- Bue and 6th atreet, but was fortunately dis- covered before any serious damage had been done. The building was bult originally for the Northern Liberties Fire Company, bat for several years it has been occupied by the pub- lic schools of the 2d District. The tirst flooris occupied by the male grammar scheol, T. M. Wilson, teacher; the second by the male in- termediate. Mrs. Myers, teacner, the third fioor by the male secondary, Miss Morse teacher. The incendiary had entered the building and piled the books in various parts of the room on the first floor, mainly around the teacher’s desk, and laid upon them what- ever ot wood he could use for the purpose, and cet firetothem. The light was discovered, and the Metropolitan Hook ane Ladder Com- pany being near were soon or the spotand extinguished the flames before any considera. bie damage was done, except to the books and the teacher’s desk. Phe firemen and police made exceijlent time in getting to the spot, and performed such service as was required of them. Before the firemen had left the spota bright ligbt sprung up suddenly in Oregon alley which caused a stampede in that direc- tion. But it turned ont to be from a burning chimney ——— ‘Tue Rev.
