Se oes = ‘LOCAL NEWS. FEMALE TRAITORS. Mary Jane Windle turned up Again. Yesterday, four women, of the quarter &nown as “Hooker's Division,” were taken tothe Second Ward station and police head- quarters, charged with exulting over the murder of the President, and trying to prevent loyal citizens from exhibiting tokens of grief by tearing down the mourning emblems from the windows of their neighbors. Lydia Young, keeping a house on C street, near 12th street, and Anna Clark, one of her accomplices, were arrested by detectives Kelly and Barry, for exulting over the death of the President, and declaring that the murderer deserves a crown. Lydia Young was released on bsil for a hearing; and Anna Clark was lodged in the cells for & hearing Alice Brown, a colored woman of thesame jocality, was taken by officer Sullivan for cursing the late President and rejoicing at bis death. She was fined $3.50 for disorderly conduct, Justice Miller regarding her extreme ignorance as a cause for im ing a lighter penalty than upon more intelligent offenders, Lizzie Brow, & white woman of the same dl- vision, was arrested by officer Mills for tearing mourning decorations from windows and for declaring that “Lincoln ought to have been killed long ago.” She was locked up im the Second Ward station and the ease reported to Superintendent Richards, who tarned her over to the Provost Marshai. 7 In addition to these, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Miss Mary Jane Windle, at the boarding-house 482 12tm street. She is charged with maliciously tearing down the flags and throwing them from the windows, asserting that ber southern friends should not be insulted by any such demonstrations in the house where she tives. Sheis only a boarder in the house, and the complainants declare that she used similar language upon the occa- sion of the illumination. when she refused to ailow her room ‘to be illuminated. when all others in the house did. This female will be remembered as the writer of various namby- pamby works—‘ Life in Washington” and ‘Letters from the Springs”—in which the South and southerners of the Keittstamp were glorified to a degree. a Some chapters of really fine writing in her Productions presented so marked a contrast to the general slip-slop as to attract comment, and it was found that such chapters had been stolen by her bodily from “Biackwood’s Mag- azine” and Mrs. Gray’s novels. After this dis- covery she faded out as & star in fashionable circies here, and at the outbreak of tne rebellion Went Sonth, but not long ago returned to Washington. It is to be regretted that there isno law under which police magistrates can yisit upon parties uttering such treasonable i uage a heavier penalty than a fine, except in cases where it can be shown that the language s@ used excites toriot. The military power, however, is able to deal somewhat more summarily with such offenders. On Saturday and yesterday considerable ex- citement prevailed in the neighborhood of @ and Sth streets, (Navy Yard,) in consequence of a woman named Edwards, as it is alleged, making disloyal demonstrations. It is said that on Saturday after the news of the calamity became known, instead of draping her resi- dence in mourning she displayed a rebel uni- form from a front window, which she hauled im when warned by the police. It is also stated that some one in the house was engaged in playing a violin. and daring yesterday a report of their proceedings having been circu- lated, the house was besieged by a large crowd Who anxiously awaited for her to make any demonstration. and who threatened that if she did they would hang her son, who had lately returned from the South. No further demonstrations being made the crowd gradually dispersed. Mrs. Edwards and her son were arrested by the military authorities this morning. cae Sit Ustnc TREASONABLE LANGUAGE —Yester- day evening,a man named A. M. Tomlison, Was arrested near the Post Office, charged With saying, «If Johnson pursues the same course a8 Lincoln, he wiil mect the same fate.” The accused claims to be a minister. Some + excitement was also occasioned during the afternoon atthe Mission Church, near Camp Fry, First Ward. at which place astranger had been invited to preach. During his dis- course, itis alleged that he made use of the ex- pression, in alluding to the assassination of the President, that “if his successor, Mr. John- son, followed in the footsteps of Mr. Lincoinin his treatment and hatred to the Sonth, he, too, would share the same fate, and that, too, short- ly." or words to that effect. Several members of the Veteran Reserve Corpse, who were present, rushed to the pul- pit and thrust the speaker from the church, when he was rescued from their hands by Lieut. Dempsey, who placed him under ar. rest and turned him over to Col. Ingraham. The preacher alleges that he meant to say that if President Johnson dealt as leniently with traitors as Mr. Lincoln did, he would meet the same fate at their hands. si Sa Its ErvEcT ON THE REBELS IN TOWN.—A noticeable feature of the effects of the tragic ®yvent upon the city has been the absence of the usual number ot Confederates upon the streets. Up to Friday night, scores ot deserters who had taken the oath, might have been seen at any time on the Avenue, but upon the intelli- gence of the assassination being spread through the city, every one disappeared, and on Satur- Gay. hot a gray uniform was to be seen except under guard. Yesterday, the fears of such parties were somewhat abated, a few came out, and to-day the streets begin to assume more the appearance of last week,in that re- spect. The secessionists residing in Washing- ton and Georgetown were in some instances induced by their fear of the public, to drape their houses, and maintain silence except in the presence of those whom they could trust as rebei sympathizers, although a tew did not hesitate to approve the deed, and tauntingly Preposed to illuminate. ae ME8TING AT THE Navy YaRD.—This morn- ing, the bell at the Navy Yard was rung as usual for the men to go to work, when a num- ber wentin, but in a short time the shops were vacated. A meeting was immediately called at the flagstaff, the stand around which was was tastefully draped in mourning, J. M. Mc- Farland being called to the chair and James M. Dalton acted as secretary. A committee of mineteen were appointed to wait on the Secre- tary of the Navy and notify him that it was the destre of the workmen to refrain from work until after the funeral, and they were also di- rected to collect from eack employee in the yard 53 per cent. on the per diem of each. Thy were also directed to draft suitable resol ations and report them to a meeting this afternoon. —~»—___ i Tax MisTeess or Boots.—Ella Turner, the Mistress of Booth, the assassin of the Presi- dent, who we stated on Saturday attempted to commit suicide by taking chloroform at her sis- ter s house, No. 62 Ohio avenue, is, we under- stand, a young girl of about 2 or 23 years of ge, whose proper name is Starr, and who isa mative of Baltimore. Some years since the sister married a very respectable typo, and went to Petersburg, Va8., Ella going with them, but while there the matrimonial knot was dis- solved, and the sisters after sojourning in Richmond and other places south made their way to this city. ee PERSsoONAL.—Major General ping at Williard s hotel. Mr. Ballard, proprietor of the Rallard House, also arrived here from Richmond, for the pur- pose of making purchases to refit his well- known hotel. Butler is stop- cee DrRowwED.—An inquest was heid this morn- ing by coroner Woodward upon the remains of an unknown man found floating in the Poto- mac at G street wharf. The deceased was five feet six inches im heighth, had lost his right arm, and was supposed by the jury to have been about 35 vears of age. The jury in their verdict state that they are unable to say that death was produced from any other cause thau that of drowning.
