LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Grover’s THEATER.—Second week of “Aladdin, or the Wonderful Lamp,” a grand oriental spectacle, introducing magical illu- Sions, fine songs and the living fountain of colored waters. Forp’s THEATER.—Miss Laura Keene as «Lady Teazie” in Sheridan's comedy of <School for Scandal,” sup by McUollom, Dyott, Phillips and other favorites. CANTERBURY.—An immense programme of ballet, sopgs, burlesque and pantomime, con- cluding with a side-splitting afterpiece. OXxFoRD.—Songs, ballet, burlesque, negro Gelineations, &c., concluding with a screaming Afterpiece. ——————_— ANOTHER CONGRATULATION FOR PRESIDENT Lincoin.—Yesterday afternoon a large crowd Assembled at the White House about 5 o’clock, in anticipation of hearing the President, the Teport having gained circulation that he would address the pubiic atthattime. Mr. Lincoln, Appearing at one of the windows in the portico addressed the crowd as follows: My Frienps: 1 am informed that you have Assembled here this afternoon under the im- pression that ] had made an appointment to speak at this time. This is a mistake. I have made no such appointment. More or Jess persons haye been gathering here at differ- ent times during the day, and, in the exhuber- @nce of their teeling—and for all of which they are greatly justified—calling upon me to say something; and I have, from time to time been sending ont what I supposed was proper to disperse them for the present. [Laughter nd applause.) I said to a larger audience this morning ‘what I desire now to repeat. It is this:—That i supposed in consequence of the glorious mews we have been receiving lately, there is to be some general demonstration, either on this or to-morrow evening, when 1 will be expect- ed, I presume, to say something. Just here I ‘will remark that 1 would much prefer having this demonstration take place to-morrow even- ing, as I would then be much better prepared te say what I have tosay than lam now or can be thisevening. [A voice—“‘And we will then have heard from Jehnston.”’} I therefore say to you that I shall be quite Willing, and I hope ready, to say something then; whereas just now I am not ready to say anything that one in my position ought to say. Everything I say, you know, goes into print, [Laughter and applause.) If I make a mis- take it doesn’t merely affect me nor you but the country. I, therefore, ought at least try mot to make mistakes. [Voices— You have made no mistakes yet.” If, then, a general demonstration be made to-morrow evening, and it be agreeable, I will endeavor to say something, and not make a mistake, without at least trying carefully to @void it. (Laughter and applause.} Thank- ang you for the compliment of this call, I bid you good evening. ‘The President retired amid great applause, ‘when the crowd quietly separated. ge CELEBRATION AT THB WALLACH SCHOOL Hovse.— Yesterday morning, on the receipt of the glorious news of the surrender of General Lee and his army to Lieutenant General U.S. Grant, the children attending the ten schools am the Wallach Building, assembled in the Jeeture room to celebrate the greatevent. Ap- propriate speeches were made by Mr. Gulick, Alderman from the 5th Ward; Mr. McCathran, Alderman from 6th War Mr. Morsell, ‘Treasurer of the School Board, and Mr, Hitz, of the Sub-Board of Trustees. The c ren Sang with a good will, ‘The Star Spangled Banner, Hail Columbia, We'll Rally round the Flag Boys,” and other patriotic songs, after ‘which they dispersed with hearty cheers for the Union and General Grant. —_._——_ Pam ScnDay.—This day was generally ob- Served throughout the city, all the churches adopting exercises os Sa oe to the occa- sion. The Sunday School Union, consisting of the schools of East Washington and Waugh Chapel (both Methodist Episcopal), of the ‘wenerable Christ Church (Protestant Episco- al), the Baptist and Presbyterian schools— ve in number-—with their officers and teach- ers, assembled in the afternoon at the East Washington Methodist Church, where ad- dresses were delivered by a number of gentle- men, and several hours pleasantly occupied by the children in singing. oS ReciPRocAL.—On Saturday asplendid silver urn was received by Adams’ Express from Philadelphia and delivered to Mr. Benjamin Ranier as a present from W. P. Cumming, of the Northern Liberty Hose, and S. S. Arm- strong, of the Northern Liberty Engine Com- pany, of Philadelphia, in appreciation for the Attention paid by Mr. Ranier to the visiting Hiremen of that city on the ith of March. A splendid gold-pencil and pen was also re- ceived by Capt. Dick Morgan (Alderman of the Sixth ward) from Mr. Armstrong for similar favors. a Tue City Last Nicut.—Notwithstanding the great excitement last evening, the city was remarkably peaceful, no disturbances what- ever occurring. In anticipation of some yi Rations of order, Superintendent Richards di- rected the day police to remain on duty during the night, to assist the night patrols, but after ‘in inspection of the several wards the Super- antendent found everything se quiet that the <iay police were relieved from extra duty about 10 o'clock. Stitt Lives.—But tew will fail to remem- ber Captain E. B. Robinson, an old member of the “typo” fraternity, who went South at the Outbreak of the rebellion. The press some snonths since had him’ dead and buried, but Mr. Browning, private Secretary to Vice Presi- ent Johnson, just returned from Richmond, communicates the fact that the veritable Cap- tain is alive and well. a CovLp’NT WorkK.—The stonecutters on the Capitol extension yesterday were so joytul Over the good news that they could not work, and they united with others in taking a gen- eral holiday. ——_—___ ATTENTION is called to the notice of the meet- ing to be held at the Georgetown custom-house this evening for the purpose of making ar- rangements to celebrate the occasion of the surrender of Lee’s army.
