‘THE EVENING STAR. Financial. {From tbe New York Oommercial.} There is less excitement in gold. Operators appear indis to Make auy large ventares for either arise orafall. The military prob- abilities are against “bull” operations; and the feeent decline has been so severe as to discour- 6 combinations for a further fall. *ercney is abundant; the supply, indeed, much exceeds the demand; but lenders are so cautious as to collaterals and margins that there is some diMeulty in borrowing. The rate on call con- tinues at7 per cent. Discounts are dull. Foreign exchange is less active, and the rates again tend in favor ot the buyer. The panic in the stock market continues. The Market isoverborne with sellers, and the prices are still falling heavily. The steady decline is bringing ino the mar- ket a contiderable amount of stock from out- side holders, who ina to think that the speedy conclusion of the war may produce Blill lower quotationg, and that consequently it is better to sell now than hold. The decline in merchandise, by diminishing the means of merchants for meeting their pay- qwents, bas also brought frem that class of bolders an important amount of stock, which ae generally ordered sold “at best price.” Governments rallie sharply at the morning board. The recent decline Se fn large orders from other cities, especially from the East; and at the same time there was @ consid- erable demand tocover “short” contracis miade @ few dsysago; which conce@rrently put up the price 14,22 on the6 per cent. securities, and 1} onthe5 percents After the boar@ the de- mand tiackened avd prices were lower. ‘There is special caution in making contracts, owing to the prevalence of rumors of failures, compromises, &c. The Evening Post say: “The +pasmodic downward movestent in some of the soundest securities this morning shows that all the mischievous consequences ef the absurd panic recently staried by the gold specniators have not completely passed away. The best dividend-paying securities are now, however, so low in price that they eannot fail to attract investors. Some indica- trons that this class of cepitalists is quietly parepesing are already making their appear- AB “The question why general prices do not go down with goldis attracting considerable at- tention. The prevailing opinion as to the reason of the spparent anomaly is that our paper money is as depreciated as ever, because its volume has not been reduce, but is, on the contrary, Augmenting at the rate of three mil- lions a week by the issues of the national banks “Gold being demonetized, as these persons claim, has lost temporarily under the panic its function of indicating the value of our paper money, the fluctuation in gold they urge is Yatber an illustration of the instability of our eurrency rather than a trustworthy measure ofits purchasing power. However tbis may be in domestic commodities, there 18 little doubt that foreign goeds oughtin price to sym- pathize more with tbe fall in geld than at present they seem to have done.”” The Express regards the declension of stoeks and bonds as the resuit of general expectation of a crieiz, and believes that the end ot wild mn erp upon militery movements to be close at hand. The Herald believes that ‘there is imminent danger of a general commercial crash, and in that event our import duties will be likely to Gecline far below the requirements of the gov- ernment for interest psy ments on its gold bear- ing bonds. The greatmajority of people speak @s if the lower the gold premium sank the bet- ter it would be; but they overlooked the great fact thatthe government income, and conse- quently the public credit, is dependent to h great extent upon the general prosperity of the country, and a@ sudden contraction ct values ie incompatible with commercial prosperity. “The feeling among the commercial comma- pity bas hardly ever been more despondent than at prescnt Some of the largest firms in the dry goods trade have already been forced to ask for a renewal of their notes, and practi- eally a large number of mercantile houses in this city are insolvent, and they can only be relieved by a raily in prices.” Yesterday's Baltimere Markets. If they did 85 they have their movement just ata time when, from the financial indications of & fall of prices all over the country, tiey bart have resolved to put their rates, down. They have advanced their prices for faneral service once or twice during the last four years, and most persons think that their demands pre. | vious to the advance just agreed upon were uuconscionably bigh. The undertakers may think that their carriages are necessities, and that families afflicted by the lossof a dear member cannot withstand their extortion. But there cen be & limit to everything, and if by combinations itis songht to render the ex. penses of funerals more burdensome than they | are at present, there will be, of necessity, & change in the method of conducting fanerals, | and it only needs a few instances of the appli- cation ot the reform to render the improved custom general. In Hartford, Connecticut, we are told itis not now the custom to invite eyery person who may have had acquaintance with the de- ceased io accompany the corpse to the cem- etery. They are invited to the residence of the | surviving friends, where the solemn faneral services are performed. There are no car- riages to convey any persons to the burial ground but the mourners and immediate rel- atives of the deceased. The friends who at- tend take their last leave of the body and de- part from the house. The family aad kindred | ‘Are all that require c&rriages, and the expense | is#hus recuced ina very great degree. @t many of our funerals there are forty or fifty carriages, and we saw aprocession in one of our streets A short time ago in which there wes atleast a hundred vehicles. The bill tor this cortege must have been enormous at the | old rates of carriage hire, and at the enhanced prices now demanded, it would have been still more burdensome. In many cases such a pa- rade would be wicked extravagance, and the like has been borne frequently by bereaved persons at a pinching inconvenience. Why cannot the Hartford custom be introduced into Philadelphia? It is sensible, decorus and prudent, and its general adoption would be a Telief to many worthy families which are now driven by custom or fashion into expenses whicir they cannot easily meet.— Phila.
