Matinee this atternoon. 2 KNOX AND WIFE VS.SHEAHAN AND WIFE. — In the Circuit Court of the District of Colum~- bia, February term, 165, Patrick Knox and wife vs. Jeremiah Sheahan and wife. This action was bronght to recover damages for the following words spoken by Mrs. Sheahan of and concerning Mrs. Knox, to wit:—* She (i. ¢. Mrs. Knox) is a prostitute, and keeps a bawdy- bouse,"&c The defendants, by their plea, de- nied the use of the sianderous words charged As above in the declaration. The parties being incourt and about to proceed to trial, with a large number of witnesses on both sides, & compromise was proposed and accepted, whereby Mrs. Sheahan signed a paper, which was filed with the papers in the cause, in which che retracted all and everything she ever said derogatory to the character of Mrs, Knox for chastity, and stated that she knew nothing derogatory to her character for chas- tity, and that if she had ever said anything derogatory to her character for chastity, she did not recollect it,and did not mean it, &c.
