Archbishop Spalding in his pastoral letter says: “In the first Pastoral Letters, which duty Tequires Us to address to you, it is Our happy privilege to be the bearer of good tidings of great joy. Our venerated and beloved Chief Pastor, Pius 1X., has again opened the treasury of the Church to all the faithful of Christen- dom, ard proclaimed asolemn Jubilee of thanksgiving and supplication. . « This is the fifth Jubilee which he has an- nounced during his eventful Pontificate of nineteen years. The first was one of joy, on the occasion of his auspicious election to fill the Chair of Peter, in 1816; the second was in 1950, the regular period for the Jubilee, and it was one partly of joy for his return from exile at Gaeta, and parily of sorrow fer the terrible Tavages made bya bloody and uncalled for revolution, which had driven him from his See; the third—in 1851—was one of united sup- plication, to implore the light of heaven to to guide him in the momentous question of au- thoritatiyely defining the doctrine of the Im- maculate Conception; the fourth—in 18583—was inspired by the hely joy which overflowed his paternal heart, after he had witnessed the de- voted loyalty of his people during a trium- phant progress he had made through a portion of his jiates—since snatched from him, alas! by the rapacious violence of a neighbor pow- erful as he was unscrapulous; and the fifth is that now proclaimed, to awaken the attention of all Christendom to the torrent of pestilent errors which are now prevailing and threat- ening to overwhelm the Church, and along with it all civil society, and to unite all the faithful followers of Christ in one general and earnest supplication to God, that he wonld mercifully interpose to control the storm and avert the impending danger” pu Se U.S. Supreme Court, March1.—On motion ot Hon. J. M. Howard, A. T. McReynolds, Esq., of Michigan, was admitted an attorney and counsellor of this court. On motion of Hon. Frances Kernan, Othan- iel T. Atwood and Leonard O. Kilham, Esqs., of New York, were admitted attorneys and ceunsellors of this court. On motica of Hon. Reyerdy Johnson, John L. Miner, Esq., of Ohio, was admitted an at- torney and counsellor of this court. No, 279. The Milwankie and Minnesota Railroad Company: appellants, vs. James T. Soutter et a survivors, &c. The petitioner was ar- rested on the charge of the larceny of about 2100 frema man named W. H. fibbetts, and it appeared that shq resided in a house ef ill repute in Hooker’s Division, and Tibbetts sometimes visited her. On the occasion of one of his visits they got to drinking, and she asked the loan of some money, when he pro- @uced a roll of notes, which she took, as she says, for the fun of tLe thing, and refesed to return it.
