The statement current here, a few years ago, that ncthing could be bought im Washington unless at exorbitant rates has been completely falsified, and the capital of the nation now possesses all the facilities for commerce re- quired by the wants ef a large and rapidly in- creasing population and the gradually opening demands of the surrounding country. Itapy cone be disposed to doubt our asser- tion, we need only call attention to the exten- sive warehouses of our fellow-citizens and native merchants, “Jonn R. Eivans & Co.,”— Whose establishments cover nearly a quarter of an acre of ground—which are louded down with an assortment of eyery variety of hard- ware, heavy and light. ‘The systematic detail of this firm in the con- duct of their extensive business is also worthy of note. Forinsiance, the entire purchases aud sales are divided into eight departments, (J) metals, (2) keg and box hardware, (5 work, (4) bag Burdware and rope, (5) builders hardware and mechanics tools, (6) coach and saddlery hardware, (7) cabinet and upholstery hardware, (=) housefurnishing and miscellanc- ous bardware Each department (presided over by one of the firm ora senior clerk) is again divided intodiezsions. These divisions are sub- divided into sectic ub sections. and sec- tions into ners an » (ail numbered.) This plan enables even a str .ngerto Know just Where every article belongs. Foreach depart Ment 4 separa voice book and sales book is kept, thus enabling the firm to ascertain the gain or losson any particular class ef goods, with the demand tor every specific article. ‘The sales of all the departments are condensed each nightinto the generalday book. To prove the correctness of these day book transfers, each head o department is rr ed to fur- nish a report daily of sales. p haces, pay- ments, and daily cash balances, and a compare ison of aggregates each night enables the book- keeper immedia ely to detect an error. The principal cities throughout the country Sre now moving towards the addition of the Police and fire alarm telegraph to their police and fire departments. From the San Francisco Morning Cail, Vec. 30th, we learn the arrival of Mr. Kennard. the contractor, there, and the ecommencemert of the survey of aroute. The telegraph there will be about the same as in Washington, but more compact, the space oc- cupied being not more than }3¢ miles diameter. The buildings in that city are mostly wooden Structures and very dry, for from March to December in each year there is little or no rain. For pretection against fire the depart- Ment there has over SU engines.
