They an- swered toran oferrands andto do the light “chores” about the house and barn. To keep them out of mischief, when not attending sehool, they possibly didsome service astride the horse to mark out the corn ground, and cultivate the corn and potaiees. Butif am- bitious to joim the men in the field or elsewhere they were equipped with the most worthless cast aside tolis, such as rusty-hoes, dull, worn out seythes, old fashioned forks, used up shovels, dull axes, battered hammers, unfiled saws, and soen through the whele catalogue of farm implements. They grew weary using them and so would men have done accom- plishing only the same amount ef labor. It would not be strange ifsuch treatment rst ianted dissatisfaction in the heart of many a farmer's boy, whieh finally ripened into utter disgust, the seeking of employment ‘eehina the counter ef the villagestore,or perhaps,in some- thing lees honorable, which in the end resulted in iniquity or ruin. Bat now, beys upon the farm are equal of the men of those daya, By the aid of the new class of impJements they are equivalent to sev- eral men with the best of the old implements. Boys have indeed wonderfully increased in importance in these last few years, and noth- ingis too goed for the brave, willing, am- Ditious little fellows. Asd they most ehly deserve their newly gained importance. Two and one half milliops of men taken trom the industrial pursuits of life for the purpose of ‘Wwar—more than ome half of these direct from farmaing population, and yet an increased umber of acres in cultivation, and an in- creased yield in agricultural productions save where the vieissitudes of seasons or the ray- ages cf imsects have interfered: How could this have been accomplished without the aid of the noble boys whe have remained at home? ‘Their work has been scarceiy less creditable or important than that of those older «boys in biue” they have labored in those other flelds where the harvest has been the harvest of deato. We have faith in the farm boys of this day &nd generation. The nation owes them its sincere gratitude. They are deserving of all the benefits that shall result from the new Indus- trial schools that are about being established. Their early life isa preparatory school that will teach them to appreciate the benefits and blessings that the agricultural colleges are in- tended to dispense. Honor, encourage, and care tor the boys of the farm.—Prairie Farmer. Early Potatees. Every family—in the country at least— should have them plentifully by the first of August, and by taking some pains may begin to use them.by the Fourth of July. The first thing to be considered is the soil. It should be @ comparatively dry and sandy soil, rather than a wet, black loam. A fresh, or new soil is greatly preferable—one recently covered With grass, or what is still better, scrub oaks, Sweet fern, blackberry and huckleberry bush- es. Such asoil when well plowed and har- rowed, will be light, and will abound with the alkalies and alkaline earth that the potato re- quires. The sitnation selected should be an open, buta warm one—along the side of an old fence or wall, where the bushes have been growing for halt a century,or less, and ex- posed to the morningsun. On sucha soil and im such @ situation the plants will startearly and come to maturity rapidiy; and if the va- riety planted be a goad one the tubers grown will have asweet and agreeable flavor. Some of the varieties used for early planting are the Jackson White, White Chenango, which come quite early, the Early Blue, and others. Burr says the Ash-leaved Kidney is one of the earliest varieties, and that the Eariy Blue is one of the earliest of the garden potatoes; of fize quality, ana one of the best for forcing for early crops. If the ground was not prepared last fall it should be made ready as soon as the frost 1s out, so that it can be ploughed six nches deep, and potatoes planted. In order to facilitate the crop some persons set a barrel of seed by the kitchen stove about the middle of March, where they remain until sprouts heve started halt aninchin length. In this case the tep of the potatoes must be cover- ed with loam or a cloth to keep out the light. Others lay a bushel or two of seed upon grass ground, in some warm spot, and cover them ‘with horse manure sufficiently deep to keep them’ warm. They will spront rapidly in this condition if they are kept moist and warm, and can be gotoutto plant more easily than from a barrel. Others still who only require a few, start them in hot beds. Planting should take place just as soon as the soilis dry enongh to admit of working it. Plant, if there isa dry surface sufficient to cover with, even if the frost isa foot deep below. Betore planting prepare liberal holes anc fill them with a shovelful of horse-stable manure. Uoyer this with a sprinkling of fresh, damp mould, and place the “set” orseed on this and cover taree inches deep. Mr. J Knight says that iffthe “sets”” are paced with their leading buds mpward afew and very strong early stems will be produced; but if the position be reversed, many weak and later shoots will arise, and not only the earliness, but the quality of the produce, be depreciated. By putting the above suggestions in practice every person may expect a fine dish of nearly ripened potatoes for his Fourth of July dinner, with his roasted lamb and green peas, and an abundant supply after the 20th of the same month. How can the farmer add to the com- fort and health of his family in a better way — New England Former, The Mowing Machine. A writer in the Country Gentleman over the signature of «Ulmus” thus speaks of the mow- ing machine> A mowing machine may be sucinctly defined as an immense shears forced by horse-power, and shearing its way along through the grass. It is singular that with all the modifications of this implement, all should adhere to the prin- cipal of the shears;no attempt having been made that lam aware of, to imitate the cutting of the scythe. Every machine-mower knows that the hard- est mowing in the world is the short, fine, and thick grass that sometimes grows upon inter- vais, a mixture perhaps of June grass and white clover, with or without a little timothy and red clover. 1 would rather cut timothy that turns three tons to the acre, ora swamp oflodged red clover for the ease of my team, than the thick soft bottom 1 have described. Now take your wife’s shears, and you can illustrate the whole matter. Try them on wet paper, on grass. See how much easier you cut all the stalks of timothy that grow upon thesame cempass, say one inch square. It has taken some five years to beat this impor- tant fact through my farmer Harris’head He knew that the thick green bottom cut easiest with the scythe, and inferred that it ought to cuteasiest with the machine, and because it did not, wbhich was spparent enough to a much lees observant and sensible man than he is, Jaid it to the knives, to the teams, to the oil, to the driver, to—what not. The true reason I have indicated. Cleaning Roots before Feeding. Roots are usually fed to horned cattle with- out cleaning, and although we eannot now point directly to any case of disease as the re- suit of such feeding, yetit must be evident that the dirt consumed is of no benefit, but on the contrary is more or less injurious. We should always prefer that the roots be cleaned before feeding, and this can be easily affected by & root cleaner, which any farmer can con- structim afew hours. The most simple de- vice for this purpose is an octagon box revol- ving on the gudgeons and turned with acrank, similar to machines for cleaning castings used m foundries. It may be made to hold two or three bushels, and is constructed by taking two pieces of plank for the ends. and sawing them into octagons two feet tour inches in diameter. On these sides strips of boards, two and a half feet long and ten inches wide, are nailed, leaving @ space or opening at the corners of an. inch or so wide, for the dirt to drop out. One of the sides 180m hinges, and is used asa place for introducing the roots. It is then hung upon gudgeons,on one of which is fitted a srank. ‘wo bushels of roots may be thrown in at a time, where they are cleansed by slowly re- volving the box, a fewtarns sufficient to ‘wear off the dirt. leaving the roots clean as If they had been washed. It isa simple affair, which any farmer can make in a few hoars, and to those who grow roots for stock feeding, will save many days of disagreeable work, while the health of stock must be promoted by its use.— Utica Herald.
