An alarm of fire was raised, which brought the Govern- ment engines Hibernia and Meigs te the spot. The soldiers stationed at Rush barrabks on 17th street were also quickly on Wand, and at- tached hose to a fire-plug in the yard and run them into the building, but no fire was found, the smoke being occasioned by & defective flue in one of the rooms on the fourth floor of the building. Quiet was soon restored, and the employees resumed their duties. Se THE AQUEDUCT.—The supplementary report of Chief Engineer Seymour, of the Washington Aqueduct, transmitted to the Honse by Secre- tary Usher, shows the condition of the work authorized by act of Congress, approved July 4, 1864, and the state of the finances up to the present time. Secretary Usher in transmitting the report SBYS: The fact thac the Government now depends, to a considerable extent, upon the water from the aqueduct as a motive pewer, and for other purposes, renders it important that the works should be completed as speedily as possible, so tar, at least,as to render a constant and adequate supply beyond ordinary contingency. I there- fore earnestly recommend an early appropria- tion of the sumsasked for this purpose, and also that such further legislation be had as may be deemed necessary to give the department more complete contro! over the water mains and the general system for the distribution of the water throughont the different portions of the city. In the same connection Engineer Seymour states that during the war the use of the aque- duct water for governmental purposes has in- creased Coin 8 Connexions have been made with the mains for supplying stables, corrals, hospitals, and storehouses, without any notice having been given to, or authority from, this office, which is charged by act of Congress with the care and S@pervision of all the mains, and the supply of water, (see page 435, volume 11, Statutes at Large ) There are, therefore, several thousand feet of pipes laid in this city of which there is no record either in this office or in that of the water registrar, and without apy regard to the general system-of distribution which should be keptin view. A great quantity of water is also consumed in the navy yard. and lately a turbine wheel has been erected there, which is supplied through @ three-inch pipe and used ter driving machinery in the pattern shop of the ordnance department. ce this turbine has been in use, thesupply iter to the main floor of the Capitol, and in ti® second stories of many buildingson Capitol Hill has been in- terrupted for some hours during each day. aS ES PoLick Rerorts—Second Precinct.—E.
