THE EVENING STAR. | | War?TEm FOR THE 6TAR.} UNDER THE DEEP. Down in the deep where the still wa' ©n the coral beds pillowed with sand, And the Kings of the Ses their watehfalness keep O’er the tr-asures of many a land, jewel more precious to me than the mines, the’s diamonds of beauty untold; A qm that in lustre anfading outshines The purest cf India’s gold, It was set in the crown of my joy long ago And the pride of my heart was its throne, Where the light of its purity beamed in the glow Of a love that no mortal hath known, jlesp Bave I, and my little one sleeping sostill, } And who never can come back to me Treveh the darkness and chil] of the waters that { fll His Sepulchre cut in the Sea, © my darling I lost, O the anguish it co<t, The angels in heavencan tel! How the blossoms of hope died out in the frost Of the winter of sorrow that fell Qn my soul when I knew that the gentle and true Bac perished when God might have saved, | And kept bim for me and my love till he srew To battle the peril he braved. Now I sit on the shore and list to the rear Of the breakers that dash at my feet, And think of the face I shall see nevermore, ?Till ever death’s :illows we meet; Bat dewn in my heart is a fountain of peace That gladdens my life while I weep, A spring whose sweet comfortings never shall cease Untilunder the lilies I sleep. Por the tide in its fow is singing I know, Through the coral groves over his breast, And the rough rolling wa with their fringes like snow Are rocking gently to rest; While the soft summer winds with the music of streams, And the ripples all whisper to me In the moonlight’s pale beame, the love and the dreams Of my ssilar boy under the res. SUGGESTIONS AnoUT ConpDUcTING WATER. it frequently happens that it would be very convenient to carry water, in aconductor-pipe or trough, froma well, across the highway to a watering trough, or to a mortar-bed, six or eight rods distant fromthe well There are two ways in which conductors may be arranged to carry it very conveniently. One way is, to set op four posts around the welland make a piattorm on the tep of them, four, six or twelve feet high, and set the pump on the top. ‘Tren the water caneasily be carried ten rods, cr more, distant from the well, in small open troughs or conductors, made by nailing two boards together like aneayetrough. Thecon- ductcr may be supported by small posts set am the ground, and may be out of reach of the faite. Another way is toset the pump ona Platform, a few inches higher than the trough where the water will be received, and conduct itin water-tight pipe from ‘the top of the plat- form down to the ground, and then, just below the surface of the ground to the place where it is to be discharged, when the pipe may be turned up so that the discharging end will be almost as high as the pump. ifthe pump shoeula bea forcing and lifting pump, cne eud of a pitman may be attached to the hanale of the pump and the otherend to @ bandle in a post, near the ground: then the pump could be worked without ascending the plaiform. Butitthe pump werea chain pump,® small pulley with a@ groove in the periphery, may be put on the journal where the crank is,and a corresponding pulley on,a journal set in aframeon the ground. Thena email cham belt, which may be obtained at most hardware stores for aiew cents per foot, i ‘Will drive the reel of the pump. A woden faucet, or @ metalic one, such as are ured in molasses barrels, may be inserted ym the inside of the pump-pipe or penstock, from which water may be drawn while the operator is standing on the ground. Such an arrangement of water fixtures will cost but little, and will sometimes save a great amount of labor. MUFFLING THE CRACKS OF A DOOR IN ‘WinTER.— Dress ont some wooden rods, about balf an inch or more square, and cover them With strips of woolen cloth. Strips of list wound around these sticks will subserve a good purpore; now close the door and nail the strips om the door, noton the casing, as itis usually done, cloge in the corners, on the sides and at the bottom and top. A door can be made air-tightor wind-proof more perfectly | by nailing the strips on the doors taan to nail them on the casing, as it is usually done. When moufiles are put on a door inthis way, a door will shut easily but very close and tight. It would be & good improvement to fasten them on with small screws, as they could be- more readily taken olfin warm weather. ToTakre a Loose Cork FROY A BoTTLe. Bend a smali wire inthe form ofthe letter U, large enough to pass around the cork; then pat the loop end of the wire into the bottle or jug, and torn it upside down, so the cork will tall to tha m-ncb of the jug, with the wire on each side of it and over the rear end, and it can be drawn outatonce. The wire will be pressed into the sides of the cork as it 1s withdrawn. A small, strong cord will sometimes subserye | the place of a wire. When a bottle is tullof | any kind of fluid, so thatthe cork rises to the Mouth, putin the wire and draw it up, and make it enter the hole straight, when it may be withdrawn. STENCILING LETTERS ON PORTABLE ARTI- OLEs.—Eveiy one ought to have his name stene | ciled on his bags, umbrellas, batlalo robes, and all euch articles that are liable to be lost easily. | Mark out sheet lead or copper, and cut them | through with sharp chisels by placing the tin on sincoth plank of hard wood Prepare | some thin paiut, and lay the name on the arti- cle to be stencilled, and apply the paint by | Taising the brush up and down instead of drawing it back and forth. The reason why names are blotied badly is because the paintis too thick or is put on too abundantly. There should be a small quantity of paint in the brushin order to do it well, and the paint should be very thin. To Stov LEAKAGE AROUND CuTMNrys.— Remoye tbe shingles and fit them again close to the sides of the chimney: taen mingle a lot of coal-tar and sand together, making a stiff paste; spread it neatly all around the chimney on the root and press itdown hard, and the water Will be effectually excluded. This plastic material will adhere to both the brick and the shingles: and neither frosts, rains nor dry ‘weather will cause it to peel otf. . BE.
