Besides the guests of the hotel in attendance, there were many of the distinguished persona- ges now in the city present, together with many of our leading merchants and their wives and daughters. The music upon the occasion was Turnished by Prof. Hays’ string band. The dancing commenced about 9 o’clock, and was kept up with vim until about 12, when the guests were invited to the dining room, where & sumptuous supper. gotten up in the manner for which Sluyter is noted, was prepared. After full justice had been done to the good things upon the table, the party returned to the jarge ball and resumed tbe merry dance, which was continued until about 3 o'clock this morn- ing. —————— ©arHoric Farr.—This fair, which opened on Tuesday evening last, is meeting with great success. The tables, which are numerous, are loaded with articles of great value and useful- ness, and it is astonishing to witness the inter- est manifested by the employees of the differ- ent tables. The cause in which they are en- gaged is a very praiseworthy one, and com- mends itself to all who are desirous of doing good; and we are sure that none who have the Welfare of religion at heart, will absent them- selves during the next few evenings the fair remains open. The object isto provide means to assist in liquidating the debt incurred in building the new Church of the Immaculate Jonception, on the corner of Eighth and M streets. Itis but ashort time since the ener- getic pastor of St. Patrick's, Rev. Father Wal- ter, commenced building this edifice, and so tar ne has been crowned with success, for he has it covered in, and hopes by Easter to have it opened for divine service. This order is made necessary by the difficulty of identifying government horses cr mules by persons not perfectly ac- quainted withe marks. The police in some in- stances haying taken horses estray and put them in stables at livery, and when the cost has accumulated to nearly the value of the animals the governmemt agents identify them and take them, the expense of keaping them falling upon the commissioner's fund. > Axotnurr New Crurncn.—The pastor of St Matthew's Catholic Church, (Rev. C. 1. White, D. D.,) bas purchased the fine lot of ground on the corner of 25th street and Pa. ayenue—75 feet by 120—on which it is contemplated to commence the erection of a new church as soon as the weather opens. In the neighbor- hood are quite a number of Catholic families, tor whose benefit this enterprise is undertaken. We notice, also, that the basement of St. Mat- thew’s Church has had a thorough overhaul- ing and renovation, costing several thousand dollars, which was opened for the first time on Sunday morning, when a handsome collection was lifted. ee JANE SuHore, the beauty, pet and grace of | a court died a miserable death of want and starvation in the streets. She clung to the fortunes of the house of Edward. When Gloster, atterwards Richard III, was power- ful, he banished the frail beauty ana forbade any one from giving her food or shelter within the realm of England. The husband she de- serted was the only one who disobeyed the order of Gloster.
