THE TRIAL OF MOSES WEISENFELD & Co.— ‘The Militery Commission on F street, of which Major General Abner Doubleday is President and Colonel John A. Fosteris Judge Advocate, yesterday took up the case of Moses Weisen- feld & Company, merchants of Baltimore, Maryland. Governor Thomas H. Ford, ot Ohio, and OC. I. M. Gwinn and Archibald Sterling, Jr., of Sighs Sppeared as counsel for the ac- cused. Two charges are preferred against the ac- cused, the first (for ‘violating the laws and customs of war’) embracing four specifica- tions. The firstspecification ot the first charge accuses the prisoners, Moses Weisenfeld, Jos. Freiden wald and Bernard Stern, residents and merchants of the city of Baltimore, Maryland, with being engaged in that city, in 186!, in Manufacturing goods contraband of war, to ‘wit: clothing intended to be sold to be carried into States in rebellion, said clothing being sold by said Moses Weisenfeld, Josepn Freiden- ‘wald and Bernard Stern with the knowledge and irtert that the parties purchasing the same should convey them into the States in rebellion. In the second specification they are accused of selling goods to Pardon Worsley and va- rious others, since August last, to be carried throuch the Union lines and sold to the Con- federates. The third specification charges the satd firm with selling goods to Pardon Worsley to be sold to parties in Loudoun and adjacent coun- ties in Virginia, knowing him to be a blockade runner. Specification 4 accuses Moses Weicenfleld, Joseph Freidenwald and Bernard Stern with having engaged in unlawful and treasonabie intercourse during 1561-2 with perscns re- ue in §tates in rebellion, and then fol- ows— «Charge 2.—Bribery. « Specification —In this, that the said Moses Weisenfeld, Joseph Freidenwaid aud Bernard Stern, having certain charges preferred against them, of violating the laws and customs of ‘War, and ordered to be tried before a military commission in the cityof Washington, D. U., did corruptly employ and procure one J. Hechtto attempt to bribe one Pardon Worsely to give talse evidence in said case, then about to be tried, and to commit perjury in said case, and also to bribe the military authorities and officers having the conduct and trial of said cause, to allow them, said Moses Weisenfelu, Joseph Freidenwald and Bernard Stern to escape without a trial or to induce them not to do their full duty in that behalf, and did furnish said Hecht, for that purpose, large sums of money, to wit: $2,500 and five bonds of indebtedness of the United States of $1,040 each, being bonds issued under the acis of Congress approved February 25, 1962, and @eommonly Known as 5-20’s and or the present nominal value of 35,300. That thereupon said Hecht did, himself, and by his agerts, corrupt- ly offer unto said Pardon Worsely and the of- ficers having the conduct and trial of said charges, said money and bonds intending to bribe said Worsely tocommit perjury in said tral and to induce said officers to prevent said trialfrom proceeding, or so conduct it that said) Moses Weisenteld, Joseph Friedenwald and Bernard Stern should not be convicted. All this at Baltimore and Washington during the latter part of December, 1861 and the early part of January, 1965. Betore the defendants pleaded, Gov. Ford, one of the course! for the prisoners, submitted to the Court that they could not properly be tried upon two distinct charges, blockading and bribery; that the language of the specifi- cation implied that the members of tha very court that were to try them had been bribed, and asked thatthe chargeof bribery bestricken from the record, and they be excused from pleading to it. The Judge Advocate replied that a military tribunal differed from the civil im this respect: that persons could be tried upon mary and different charges, whileit was not so in the civil tribunals. In reply toone of the members of the Court, who had stated that whatever might be the construction of the specification regarding what officials had been bribed, he, as one member, had not. Goy. Ford eid, “I do not believe that an official has been bribed,” to which Jadge Foster said, «/ have, for I have got the money.” The bribery ex- tending to other officers, mentioning the names of Major Turner and Major Gaines. ‘The Court was then cleared, and upon its re- opening, it was announced that the defendants should plead to the charges, when they pleaded “mot guilty.” Po Court here adjourned to 11 o’clock to- By. ee SEconD WARD Dra¥yt MEETING.—A meet- ing was held lastevening at German Hall, tith street, to consider matters relating to the draft, Mr. W.N. He took a boat and went to it, and found it was on the head of acolored man. He let the hat go, and towed the body tothe shore. The inquest by the coroner could develop nothing relative to the drowning or the name of the man. The body was buried by the corporation. Coroner Woodward held an inquest at the Quartermaster’s Hospita!, about 2 o'clock yes- terday, in view of the body of John Burk, who killed himself by cutting his throat with a ra- zor, the night previous. Burk requested Mr. ‘t. W. Burton, agent of the hospital, before he died, to take charge of his money, bury his bedy. and send the balance of the money to his (Burk’s) children in St. Louts, Mo.
