New songs and new sayings nightly. ———— Frer THreves.—Tuesday night, officers Mil- ler and Sneed, of the Second Ward, arrested Lewis Risby, Jessie Donlain and Lewis Dix- on, colored, the oldest -) years of 2ge, the youngest 60, caught in the act of stealing wood rom the wood yard of J. B. Warder, Fifteenth street and canal. Mr. Warder has been losing Ris wood during the l&st ten days at the rate ot a half cord perday. Mr. Warder says he will cheerfully lay a quarter cord ont, for those who cannot buy, to use every day, if they will let his wood piles alone at night. He has caught a number stealing his wood, but ‘would not prosecute them, and he prosecutes Dow to stop the wholesale eperations. Justice Boswell, in consideration of Donlain’s age, sent him to the workhouse. Risby and Dixon Were sent to jail forcourt. The prisoners re- sided in Murder Bay. eg Larceny Cases —Wm. Johnson, colored, Was arrested yesterday by officer Markwood, for stealing a hat. Johnson belongs to Murder Bay, and was taken before Justice Boswell. The evidence was positive against Johnson, and the justice sent hirn to jail for court. Mary Moore was arrested by officer Hol- brooks, for stealing a lady's hat and feather. She also belongs to Murder Bay. The same justice held her for further hearing. The defense set up is that the accused seized the hat and feather for debt. . Jacob Prince was arrested this morning by Officer Parker, for the larceny of a trunk and contents, valued at $100, and a tub containing clothes valued at $25, The defense in this case is also that the goods were taken to secure a debt. The same justice held Prince to bail for a hearing. eee Sent To Count.—Last night, Lewis J. Clark paid a visif tothe house kept by Mary Ken- yon, in the alley between 12th and 13th and E Streets north. Being intoxicated, he got into an altercation with the proprietress, who said something to him that he did not relish, and he slapped her in the mouth. Before Clark lefta number of soldiers who were in the house at- tacked and beat him severely. After they were done with him, John D Buckley came up and gave him another beating. Buckley and Mary Kenyon were arrested by officer Si- monds and taken before Justice Boswell, who held Buckley to bail for court for assault and battery, Mary Kenyon for keeping a bawdy- house, and Clark was sent to jail for assault. ———— CHARGE OF ForGERY.—Yesterday morning, a German named Herman Meiser, who haiis from Philadelphia, and who claims to have been attached to the 97th Pa. regiment, was before Justice Boswell on a charge of forging the name of UOaptain Ed. L. Lekman, Provost Marshbalof the Third District of Pennsyliva- nia, to papers calling for the payment of about #400, he having been arrested by Detective Donaldson, of the Metropolitan force; and he ‘was committed to jail for a further hearing. It is alleged that he go. possession of a numberof official papers, and signed Captain Lehman’s name on them and passed them on Isaac Beg- gardt, who tound them to be fraudulent. SSS ES Brapy’s.—The pupils of Mr. A. S. Brady had an attractive exhibition at the Gymna-. sium Rooms, Louisiana avenue, last night. ‘The performances were exceedingly fine, shew- ing the excellence of Mr. Brady’s training. The performances on the peg pole, suspended Tings, horizontal bars, &c., were really aston- ishing, and were perfermed with an ease and gtace showing the admirable effects of such physical training in giving strength, elasticity and symmetry to the frame. The exercises were followed by a lively “hop,” and the dancing was kept up with spirit for many hours. ————— County Cases.—Yesterday afternoon, of- ficers J. H. Harry and G. W. Hardle, of the county police, arrested James Bateman, An- drew Buckley, Catharine Maghan, Alice An- derson and John Burke upon charge of selling liquor without license from the Levy Court. They were taken before Justice Buckey, and John Carlton testified that he bought liquor from each one and paid for it. He bought whisky from the four first-named and ale from the last. Justice Buckey fined the whisky sellers #20.44 each, but Burke having & permit to sell f ented liquors until the 0th of Jan- uary, was dismissed. ——_—_—_ GertTine Rip or ais Monsy.— Wednesday night, Jobn O. Broderick, a sailor, was arrested by officer Shelton, for being drunk, and on his person there was found $513 in his pockets. He was jocked up for the night, and yesterday morning his money was returned, with the ex- ception of the amount of tw? fines of $5.90, which bad been imposed by Justice Handy on him and a comrade. Last night he was drought in again tor the fame offense, when it was dis- covered that his pile hadedwindled down to $300. ee Perty LARCENY Tiere. as Leach, of the Third ward, arrested Mary Mc(tuire for the larceny of a pair of shoes from the store of Israel & Howell. She was taken he- tore Justiee Hollingshead who held her to bail for court, ‘bere was two girls together, and one was used as awitness. This is the third time in three successive days that Israel & Howell has been ropbed by females. ———.—_ Forrest Hartt Prison.— This military prison, situated in Georgetown, will be abol- ished in a few days, and in future stragglers, deserters and bennty jumpers arriving here will be forwarded direct to Col. Welles, at Al- exapdria to be disposed of. The Assistant Provost Marshalship, under Capt. Kilpatrick, will be continued in Georgetown. caer SS Stes CLOSING THE OLD YgAR.—On Saturday last, Mr. J. Bel Adams, of the bar of this District, determined not to live another year in single biessedness, and took with him to the residence of Rev. Mr. Keeling, of the Episcopal Church, Miss Harriet O.
