Saar eee yu Tue Recertions YEsTRRDAY.—We add to our list of yesterday some mention of other pleasant New Year's receptions. The members of the Uabinet, several of the Judges of the Supreme Cour’, United States Senators, and a number of the members of the House of Representatives, “kept open house.” The crowa at Secretary Stanton’s and at Senator Sumner's, was almost continually large, and the guests were received with ur- banity and elegance. Secretary Seward’s mansion was 4 favorite resort during the day, and his receptions were auarted with simplicity, dignity, and elegance. Secretary Fessenden received a large num- ber of friends, prominent among whom were the Maine delegation and other representatives from the New England States. Hon. Reverdy Johnson also received and ‘was visited by a large number of friends. Senator Harris, of New York, at his elegant house on H street, near 15th, received his driends on this occasion after the manner of the New Yorkers, with whom New Year visits originated, or rather were made popular throughont the country. _ Prof. Bache, Superintendent of the Coast Survey, and B. B. French, Commissioner, were visited by large numbers of their triends, and entertained their guests in handsome style. Hon. William Helmick, who, it is stated, is about to resign his pesition as chief clerk of the Pension Bureau, handsomely entertained a large number of friends during the day. Mr. 5. P. Brown. ntvy agent, was visited at his country seat, py many friends, and they ‘were entertained in a charmingly hospitable, upostentationus, and friendly style. Mr. Haye, chief clerk of the Patent Office, en- tertained many callers in a graceful and gen- erous style. Messrs. Riley A. Shinn, Hudson Taylor, J. J. May and F.'A. Fahnestock entertained im- anes numbers of visitors in a sumptuous style. Among the many citizens at the West End whose houses were open to their numerous friends were Mr. Geo. W. Riggs. Mrs. God- dard, (daughter of the late Mr. Vinton,) Mr. Phipps, Mr. Ohas. Krops, and Mr. Jos. C. G. en a Rey. Dr. J.C. Smith, Rey. Dr. Gurley. Rev. Dr. Hall, and many other clergymen were vis- «ted by their numerous friends, including the children of their respective Sunday schools. Dr. Gurley was presented by the children of the Sunday school attached to his church with a complete set of Irvirg’s works. Rey. J.G. Butler, pastor ot the English Lu- theran Church, was visited yesterday morn- ing by the children of the Sunday school of that church, and in the evening the reverend gentleman bad a congregational reception. Rev. Dr. Nadal was also visited, at his resi- dence on F street, by large numbers of his con- gregation and other friends. Mr. Philp, (of the firm of Philp & Solomon,) entertained his friends in a handsome manner. Among bis guests were many artistic friends. James W. Spaulding.
