Twelve o'clock was the hour designate for the reception of the foreign ministers and mem- bers of the Cabinet; but twenty minutes before that time they began to arrive, and the first to | @nter the mansion was Mr. Alfred Berghmans Secretary of the Belginm Legation, and sev- | eral attachees of the same, followed by Senor Miguel Maria Lisboa, Envoy Extraordinary and Ministar Plenipotentiamof Brazil, ac- companied by his secretaries, These parties were ushered into the Red | room, and at i2o’clock Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln | made their appearance in the “Bine"” or “Oval” room, when the other Diplomatic Corps and Oabinet officers began to arrive The Diplomatic Corps was fully represented, Bnd also the Cabinet, Secretaries Seward. Stanton, Welles. Fessenden, Usher, Postmas- ter General Dennison, and Attorney General Speed being present, all of whom were ac. | companied by members of their familles. About 12 o'clock the Judges of the Supreme Court of the United States and of the Court of .. Cisims, and the Supreme court of the Dis- « ‘trict of Columbia, were ushered in, among whom were Justices Wayne, Olifford, Grier, and Nelson; and Judges Cartter, Fisher, and Wiley. Mr. Fex, Assistant Secretary of the | avy; Mr. Harrington, Assistant Secretary of | the Treasury; Mayor Wallach, and District Attorney Carrington, together with a large | mumber of other distinguished parties, were | also received by Mr.and Mrs. Lincoln at this hour, The officers of the Army, heaced by General ‘Townsend, and of the Navy, headed by Admi- ral Smith, having previously formed in line at | the War and Navy Departments, filed into the | President's house at about twenty minutes of | Je'clock. Prominent among the Army officers was Gen. Ben. F. Butler, commander of the | Army of the Jnmes; and General Banks, Dou- bleday, Auger, Hitchcock, Casey, Fessenden, Rucker, Terry; Col. Ingraham, Provost Mar- shal General Defences north of the Potomac, and Col. Taylor ana Major Raymond, of Gen, Auger'’s stait. After the officers of the army and navy had been received by the President, the gates tothe enclosures were thrown open, when a general | rush was made by those eager to gain admit- tance to the mansion. Marshal Lamon introduced the. visitors to the President, while Commissioner French presented them to Mrs. Lincoln. The Presi- dent received all with the greatest cordiality, | and took each individual by the hand. The | crowd, afier passing through the Red, Blue, | Green and East Rooms, emerged from the maasion through one of the side windows, over | a eubstantial wooden platform leading to the | portico. i The Marine Band, under Scala, was sta- tioned in one of the ante-rooms, and discoursed excellent music during the reception hours, In order to prevent the handsome carpets of | * the Mansion from being soiled by the mud and | dirt brought in by the crowd, canyas was sprea@® over them. Tne police arrangements for the occasion were admirable, and refiect great credit upon | Superintendent Richards, who was present in person. The detail consisted of thirty-two en, under Sergeant Cronin, of the Fourth ard, who had them well posted throughout the building, co as to direct parties in which direction to move, and prevent crowding and jostling after the crowd had gained admit- tance. The Times says the message contains little from which the Federals can derive encour- agement or consolation, The Government's position, military and financial, is rapidly growing worse. The message effectually des- troys peace expectations. The Times thinks the North does not possess the power of confiscating property. The mere strongest possible motive to resist to the last extremity. The Secretary of tne Treasury’s Teport of the Federal finances is even more discouraging than the military intelligence. This conclusion is unavoidable. The situation, even as depicted in the message and accompa- nying report, financial and military, renders it the most uncomfortable address ever read to an American House of Representatives. Brit- ish neutrality has been maintained so well that there is only one point in the message which concerns England directly. The resolution to place an additional force on the Great Lakes is not to be complained of. We hope Canadians will take measures to Trevent Canada from being made the basis of cursions into a friendly State, if by placing gunboats on the lakes, these enterprises can beimpeded. President Lincoln will only be engaged in an object in which the British au- thorities will be bound to assist him, but we sincerely trust that this increase of force is not We cannot conceive the necessity that occasional forays of a few adventurers should be bronght in connection with the question of continuing or modifying rights of transit from Oanada through the United States, as well as the regulation of im- ports, which was temporarily established by the reciprocity treaty of 1554. Carro, Jan. 2.—By an arrival from New Or- leans, itis ascertained that the expedition to Pollard was highly successful in the destruc- tion of rebel property. On the return the ex- pedition were met at Little Escumbia by the enemy, when the colored infantry made a suc- cessful charge. A second attaek was also re- pulsed, when the rebels scattered through the woods with heavy loss. The expedition wis not again molested. Ourtotal loss during the expedition is estimated at seventy-five Killed and wounded. Wallace received from Gen. Sheri- dan a request that he would arrest two ladies who had passed through his lines from the South, and had located in Baltimore. Colonel Woolley, upon receiving orders from General Wallace, detailed one of his detectives, and in ashort time the parties werearrested. One of them, Mrs. Carroli, was arrested at the resi- dence of a relative, Col. Chas. Carroly. No. 16 Mount Vernon Place, and the other, Miss Sel- don, Was arrested at the residence of Mr. Tay- lor, Ne 163St. Paul street. It is stated that | the two ladies had tried to come to Faltimore by permission of Gen Sheridan, aud tnat this being refused, they succeeded in getting here without permission. They are both wellknown in the fashionable circles of this city. Mrs. Carroll, itis stated, is but lately marrieg. and returned to this city on account of failing meaith. Both of the ladies were sent up to them trom the pressure. One lady reached the’! door in sueh a& dilapidated condition, (her bon- i net being smashed and her shawl torn nearly | 1m twain,) that she ssid she would not go into | the presence of Mr. Lincoln in that condition, and she inguired the nearest way out. One man, who was determined to see the President, | come what might, had the tail of hislongcloak | well fastened between four or five men in his | rear, and concluded to leave the garment be- Bind, unlooping it from his neck, and made the i best of his way in. The police did their pect to prevent crowding, but the pressure was too much for them. NEW YEAR'S RECEPTIONS. The old-time custom of receiving friends on New Year's has been more generally observed to-day than for many years past. The mem. bers of the Cabinet received as usual at their several places of residence, and the observance | of the day was maintained with spirit by | mumerous private citizens. Mayor Wallach dispensed his usual elegant hospitalities at his residence, on Louisiana ayenue and his honse | was thronged with visitors for many hours. | ‘The City Councils paid their respects to him in a body, and we noticed there were many dis. tinguished Government officials, army and mavy Officers, and persons of note in private jife. Asbury Lloyd, Esq., President of the Board of Common Uouncil, received a throng of friends at his house on E street, as did Mr. Alesander R. Shepherd at his handsome resi- dence on 10th street. Mr. William Wall, 10th street, also hada host of visitors at his bountifully spread tables, as did Mr. Thomas A. Stephens, ith street, of the city councils, and of the same firm. Mr. Lewis Clephane received in his usual hospitable style at his residence on G atreet. Postmaster Bowen also was largely visited by bis many friends and the Levy Court, of which he is a member, paid their respects to him in a body. District Attorney Carrington, M street, and Mr. 5S. W. Owen, 1th street, also dispensed , generous hospitalities on the occasion. | FRUM THE FRONT. A Furious Assault on a Picket Post. | Information from the Army of the Potomac | to the evening of Saturday, is as follows: | About daylight this morning our pickets on | that portion of the front line between Forts Howard and Wadsworth, now occupied by the ist and 3d brigades of the ist corps, were sur- prised by about three hundred rebels, who cbarged upon them without any previous warning, and drove them back within the in- trencbments, killing two, wounding three, and capturing thirty-five. The rebels then gathered the blankets, knap- sacks, ete. which our men left at the picket posts, and retired to their own lines, without losing @ man. The attack was so entirely unexpected, and the affair so quickly ever, that the officers of our picket guard had not time to even give orders to the men, with a to resistance, until they Dad fallen back peu the iptrenchments. ‘The assault was of the most furlous charac- ter.
