Merritt, late Judge Advocate of the Central Gnardhouse, has been temporarily assigned to duty as quartermaster of tne first brigade Veteran Reserve Corps. FROM NASHVILLE. Mood Across the Tennessee River—Heavy Cann ding the Direction of Flor- ence—tndignation Against Heed in the Rebel Army. NASHVILLE, Dec. 29.—Union prisoners who escaped from Florence, and arrived on the 27th at Columbia, say that Hood's advance arrived at the Tennessee river on the 2ist, and on the next day bis infantry crossed ona pontoon bridge which he had removed above theshoals, but of ont the reach of our gunboats, One of the prisoners states that Hood crossed the Tennessee with 110 cannon. He counted 25 on his retreat. On Sunday, when twelve miles this side of the Tennessee river, he beard heavy camnon- ding in the direction of. Florence, which was probably Steadman'’s force engaged with For- rest. There is intense indignation against Hood im the rebel army. Army Vouchers in Pi jion Enemy—Netice te the Public. Civournati, December 29.—A package of quartermasters’ vouchers, amounting te nearly $200, 00, approved and issued by Captain J.C. Crane, quartermaster at Nashville, was taken from a train captured by the rebels, on the Lovisville and Nashville railroad, on the 22d. Adams’ | Express Company notifies the public not to Begotiate or recenve them. of the The Raid on Pollard. {From the Richmond Sentinel, Dec. 27.) < MosiLx, Dec. 19—The Yankee raiders from Pensacola to Pollard destroyed all pave and gome private buildings, damaged the road in- considerably, and the bridge over the Escam- bia was partly destroyed. Captain Henry Pope, quartermaster, was captured. A few megroes were stolen. Yesterday our forces purened them. A portion of his supplies and transportation were captured. The road was strewn with their dead. There was an infantry force of another raid- ing party near Good's mills and Pensacola. | On Sunday its advance was met by our caval- ry, and driven tack several miles. Captain Semmes arrived here yesterday from Europe, via Matamoras. Foranoray.—The New York Post of last evening 6ays: Goid opened at 224, and after rising to 225%, fell to 2x, closing at 224. Exchange is dull at 109 '5al09% for specie. ‘The joan market is more active at? per cent. A few loans have been called in this morning, and the consequent requirements of a few firms cause a tolerable brisk inquiry. In conse- quence, however, of the limited amount of business doing the general feeling is easy and the supply of capital is ample. The Treasury drafts on the National Banks are heavy, and the Government balances in these institutions are being employed in paying off the heavy arrears of unpaid requisitions. Satisfaction is expressed at the new arrangements for re- quiring more ample security from those Na- Gonval Banks which are entrusted with the cus- | tody of the public ¥ands. The stock market opened dull, with more Sellers than buyers. Governments are steady at yesterday's lowest quotations. Bankshares are qmet. Coal stocks firm, mining shares | neglected, petroleum stocks firm and railroad bonds fiat. Railroad shares are drooping, and | some of the speculative stocks are rather pressed for sale. Tatar ov Rese. SyYMPATHIZERS.—The Miiitary Commission, General Cook, Presi- dent, and Major Lord, Judge Advocate, sitting | trial of Frederick Gaither, of Montgomery county, Md., charged with giving aidand com- fertte and harboring rebels. Magrader, of Mont- gomery county, Md., charged with coming within the Federal lines without authority, ‘was also tried yesterday and concluded. The record will be sent to headquarters for revi- | sion. The Commission will proceed with the trial of Dr. Alexander Kline, of Loudon county, Va., who is charged with giving aid and com- Tort to the enemy during Mosby’s late raid on the Baltimore and nio ratiroad. INTERCEP ION OF HARDER, The Jatest arrival trom the fleet off Savan- nah reports that hopes were entertained of the interception of Hardee's column in its passaze | across Broad River. Heavy cannonading was heard in the direction of the river when the dispatch boat left, and it was believed that a portion of the enemy would be cut off, even if the entire column was not checked or forced back nearer Sherman's army in his (Hardee's) retreat. Broad River is an arm of the sea between the island of Port Royal and the mainland, across which runs the Charleston and Savannah Railroad. SHIPMENT OF FREIGHT TOCITY POINT. Yesterday we mentioned that an o-der had been issued prohibiting the shipping of pur- veyors’ and Sutlers’ goods on the mail boats to City Poiut. This order includes express freight, except when in small quantities, Hereafter special boats will be detailed for the shipment of freight, and the regular boats will be devoted to the exclusive use of the mails and passengers. EXCHANGE OF PRISONERS, Lieut. Colonel Multord, U.S. Commissioner for the exchange of prisoners, leaves next week with new propositions to the rebel authorities for the exchange of all Union men nowin their hands. oe 1 974 NAVY YARD, The steamer Bat, (@ captured blockade-run- ner,) Bow in service, arrived at the Navy Yard yesterday afternoon from Hampton Koads, for a foremast, to replace one lost on her passage from Boston, where she had been condemned and fitted out. She is under the command ef Lieut. Hawley, who had receatly had charge of the receiving ship Ohio, in Bos- ton harbor. The Saco, a fourth-class vessel, also arrived at the Yard yesterday from Hampton Roads, and will probably remain some time, as we hear that it is in contemptation to subject her machinery to a number of experiments, and also to repair her boilers, some of which are out of order. The Saco was built at the Charlestown (Mass) Yard, and launched in August, 1863. Her engines were built by the Conliss Steam Engine Uo., of Providence, R. 1 and are horizontal, direct-acting engines. of 23 inch cylinder. She has fourteen cylindrical boilers, which it was claimed ceuld make their own fresh water; but thus far, we hear, they bave not worked as well as could be desired, and in consequence the vessel has seen but little sea service, and the state of the boilers rendered it necessary that she should be sent here. The following is a list of toe officers:— Lieut. Commander J.G.Walker, commanding; Acting Master W. F. Hunt, Executive Officer; Ist Assistant Surgeon, A. Matherson; Acting Ensigns, O. T. Wixon, W. H. It was reported on the streets yesterday that the daring and distinguished guerrilla chief, Jol. John S. Mosby, had been killed by the en- emy. The story was that he had been sur- rounded while dining &t the house of a friend in Culpeper, and ordered to surrender; that he drew his pistol and fired upon the enemy, when he was shot dead. Buta telegram from Fredericksburg, dated the 26th, was received yesterday morning, } which contradicted the report of his dexth, stating that he had been shot, but nct mortally wounded, and was in the hands of his friends. The question of his condition is, hawever, not yet definitely ascertained.—Kichmon® Dispatch, Dec, 27. The Wounding of Mosby. It was reported last evening that Colonel Mosby had been very seriously wounded in an encounter with theenemy in Prince Wil- liam county. He is said to have been shot througn the body. We conld obtain no particulars of the affair; but as araiding party of the enemy, composed of whites and negroes, were in Dumfries on Wednesday, it is probable that Mosby encoun- tered them on their return to Alexandria.
