THE EVENING STAR. Rope-Tying Tricks at Astley’s. | At Astley’s, in London, a young acrobat uamed Redmond is doing the rope and sack trick with astoundirg cleweraess. His feats are thus described: « A stout Manilla rope, rather thicker than that used by the brothers Daven- ort, and some twenty yardsin length, after foie carefully examined, was handed totwo ot the gentleman present, who proceeded to tie wp Mr. Redmond. His hands were not tied close together benind his back; but pinioned to his sides, apparently in the most secure fash- | jon. The rope ws then passed round his arms | and body and round and between his legs. | Daring the operation there seemed to bea good | deal of rigidity in his limps, and he breathed beavily. When tying was complete, he was placed in & sack, the Mouth of which was tied over his head. A screen was then placed between him and the spectators; the noise of the unloosening of ropes was heard, andin four minutes Mr. Redmond stepped forth perfectly tree, with the rope in his hand and the sack at his feet. Heexplained that the greater part of his time had been occupied not in freeing himself, but untying the knots on the rope after he was loose. Another per- | formance then took place. Mr. Redmond’s bands were tied together in frontof him—the Tope being passed round the wrists and secure- ly knotted. Mr. Redmond proposed that the Knots should be sealed, but it was not thought becessary. Between the arms thus bound together at the wrist a cord was passed, | coming over the rope, and acting a3a check on it. Both ends of the cord were held by the | gentlemen who had tied the rope, and who also held the ends of the ropeitself. Thescreen | was placed in position andin about a minute | anda half the cord which had been passed | between the arms and overthe rope was loosed, whilst Mr. Redmond’s wrists were still tast- | ened together { Again Mr. Redmond retired behind the screen, and that instant the ropes round his | wrists fell away and was free. Manifestly be hadélipped his hands through them. Mr Redmond retired again behind the screen with the ropes. In about tour, or at most five min- | utes he called for the screen to he removed. That was done, and he was seen bound in the most extraordinary manner, legs, arms, body | and wrist, being literally swathed in the rope. | The gentleman who had tied him previously were invited to untie him, and attempted to do so, but failed utterly. Apparently it would have required hours for unaccustomed fingers to accomplish the task. The knots utterly baffied all attempts at their unravelment. At last the task was given up in despair. The screen was again put round Mr. Redmond. and in about three minutes he stepped forth unbound with the rope free from kno's in his hand. He seemed much exhansted, perspira- tion streamed down his face, and has breathing ‘Was much accelerated. In answer to ques- tions, he said the tricks required great sirength for their aceomplishment.” Sounp Anp Fury nN ovr Homes.—There are abodes made daiiy toresound with quarrel- ing and scelding; there are families where mother and children all talk in loud, angry | tones caping from such “the solitary” may | well bless God for his own lot, which when viewed in the warm, loving light of a well- ordered and bappy home, sometimes seems | almost intolerable. Ye sad, lonely maidens; ye sour. fretful bachelors, when your desola- tion becomes too great a burden for you to bear, just go for a two days’ visit to the family ofthe brawling woman,” and you will be,for | the time, cured. Yoursilent, lonely room will be as a harbor of refuge for you during many subsequent days. If wives and mothers could but realize what they are doing when they begin the loud-voiced scolding syscem, how quickly they would desist. But there must ba authority andpunishmentin the family; and there isin many cases nothing so good as the | red. Mothers, do the little children swarm about you, and weary you by their wants and their ways! Try for one year the virtue of low, mild tones, decided measures, and in case of intentional naughtiness, the rod; and if at the end of the year you are not satisfied that this 13 pot the best course, break the rod and depend for discipline on scolding and loud threats never made good. Children imitate as y asdo monkeys, and if the mother's voice is loud and harsh, their’s will probably be the same,if ber ways arerough withthem, their's will be so witheach other, and their homes will be a place from which we shall be only too happy to escape. Hanps oN Bosoms.—A mischievous Yankee one day stopped before a shirt manufactory, and read on a card, hanging outside ; «Hands on Bocoms Wanted.” He stepped inside, asked to see the “boss,” which individual bein g brought before him, he innocently inquired whether they wanted handson bosoms. « We do, sir,” was the curt reply. “Tuen I'm your man: trot out your females, and I'll take my pick.” “There seems to be some misun- derstanding bere,” remarked the proprietor. **Not tomy thinking,” replied the Yankee; “you want hands on bosoms, eh!’ “We do.” «Very good, you see them hands?” said Yank, holding forth his two, which were more | remarkable for size than cleanlin “I see them, certainly said the shirt merchant, not | comprehending the other’s meaning. + Good again,’ said Yank. ‘The hands are here: now all we want is the bosoms to put the hands on. So please jest trot out the feminines, and we’ probably make a trade.’ The merchant ex- plained the meaning of the sign, and :he Yan- kee left, amid the merriment ot some three or four clerks. The proprietor tookin his sign soon after, and when he hung it out again, it read thus: «+ Wanted, good shirt bosom makers.” MELANCHOLY OccURRENCE —Un Saturday | last, about noon, as Mr. Jobn PD. Delozier, re- | siding upon the road leading from this place to Pomtret Church, was seated at table with | bis family, the house was found to be on fire. Mrs. Deloz er im mediately rushed up stairs to save some money, when suddenly the room | ehe had entered was enveloped in fixm? and gameke. Upon being told that his wite had | undoubtediy perished in the flames, Mr. Delo- | vier sudden?y tell, struck. it is supposed with peralyeis of the heart. His wife who had es- caped by leaping tromthe window, reached the spot just in time to witness the last gap of Derbuseband Mr. Pelozier at the time of his ceath was about seventy years of age. Mrs. Delovier has a family ot five small « hiidren, and by this sad and melancholy event is left entirely destitute.
