Particulars in our second edition. ee ee Visit oF CITY FATHERS TO THE WASHING- TON AsyLUM.—On last Wednesday afternoon the city fathers, as is their custom, paid their annual visit of inspection to the poor-house, beautifully situated on the>bank of the Ana- costia. ‘Te + Intendant of the asylum (Josias Adams, Esq., first conducted the visitors to that por- tion of the building termed the workhouse, where everything was found in good order. The wards occupied by those who had hith- erto been homele-s, and unable to make for themeel yes 4 living, either because of old age, sickness, wounds, or deformity, were next visited, and their comfort in every respect in- quired into, and all were apparently kindly cared for by the Intendant and Bis good lady. Some of the inmates had religious books, show- ing thereby that they were endeavoring to pre- pare themselves to occupy & home of their own, where there will be no want or distress; and in rome rooms were noticed suspended against the wall the holy cross. Some of the females were using the needle to very good advantage, either for theirown benefit or for others. A very noticeable feature iv this institution ‘was the number of infants it contains—20 or 25— | the children of mothers who have been deserted by worthless husbands, or of mothers who | have po marriage ring to show, and who make | the poor-house a place of refuge. ‘The next place visited was the room in which are kept the unruly and disobedient portion of the inmates, and in which were found as God- forsaken and dare-devil a looking set as could easily be raked together. The baking and cooking rooms were next inspected, and were found neat and clean in every particular. By questioning the baker it ‘Was ascertained that oue barrel and a quarter of wheat flour is baked per day, besides a good quantity of corn bread, &c. ‘The grounds surrounding the building were clear of all kinds of rubbish, and these used for agricultural purposes were in keeping with all else. ‘The Commissioners of the Asylum werealso present during the inspection. These commis- sioners are required to meetevery Friday at- ternoon at the Asylum to consult regarding the same, and to make any arrangements they deem necessary. When they think it best they release persons sent to the workhouse before their time expires, and have thus saved to the corporation within the past year about $500. They have in the past year made 25 or 3) extra visits, and for all of which they receive the small amount of $150 per year, oftentimes having to hire conveyances to take them to and from the Asylum, it being a long distance from the city railroad, besides leaving their own business. After the inspection the visitors were invited by Mr. Adams to his comfortable table where the guests soon come to the conviction that the poor house is on the whole not a bad place to goto. During the repast Mr. and Mrs. Adams were heartily complimented on the excellent condition of the institution under their charge. We notice some need prevailing here of baying water and gas introduced into the beilding and also new furnaces for heating it. gps Eriscorat ConrigMations.—Right Rev. Bishop Southgate confirmed at St. Alban’'s Church fifteen persons. The class consisted of twenty-three, but eight were prevented by inclement weather from attendance. At Glen Ross, tourteen persons; at Rock Creek, eighteen persons; at Soldiers’ Home, after the performance of full church service, two persons. On Wednesday evening, at Trinity, thirty-six; making & total thus far of ninety-8ix To-night, Bishop Southgate administers the rite of confirmation at Grace Charch, Island, Rey. Mr. Holmead, rector. | ——— | Tae Decree or RepeKAH.—On Wednesday evening, Oriental Lodge, No. 19, I. 0. U. F., had an interesting time, a large number of ladies and members of the order being present and taking part in conferring the Degree of Rebekab on six ladies. The company, after the close ot the Lodge, proceeded to the European | Hotel, where they set down to a fine supper, | prepared by Emerich; and after full justice | ad been done the floor was cleared, and sev- | eral hours were spent in the enjoyment of the dance. pe gee a SHOULD be Seen To—F street, where the grade has been recently lowered in the con- struction of the passenger railway, is in a frightful condition, and the city will be in for it for damages on account of ‘somebody hurt,” if measures are not speedily taken to reduce the grade of the other portions of the street to correspond with the excavation already made. oie IN¥YANTICIDE.—Yesterday morning an old colored woman found the body of & white female infant on 2d street east, near St. Peter’s | church, where ithad been dropped by some | heartless person, and perished from the effects of the cold.
