THE EVENING STAR. THE MULLER CASE. The Prisoner found Guilty—sentenced to Death-The Execution to take place ber 14. [From tbe London Times, Vet. 31-] THE SUMMING UP. On reassembling, on Saturday, the lord ebief baron proceeded, amid profound and solemn silence to sum up. (During the ad- Gress of the Jearned chief baron, Maller stood forward in the dock and listened with the deepest attention to every word which was uttered.) THE VERDICT. The jory returned into court at afew min- utes after three. There wasa deep silence in the court while Mr. Avery, the clerk, directed | the names of the jury to be called over. The foreman, in answer to the usual in- quiry said: “Guilty.” Directly the fatal word was pronounced, the | jord chief baron burst into 8 flood of tears. He placed his hands over his face, and rested B selbow on his desk, And a profound silence Teigued throughoat the court. After some mon n's of painful suspense, during which tae prisoner stood unmoved in the dock, and it seemed doubtful what course would be adopt- ed. the black cap was bronght in. Mr. Avery, the chief clerk of the court, ad- dreesing the prisoner, asked him whether, hav- ing been conyicted of the murder, he had any- thing to say. Maller (with great composure)—My lord, I | have nothing tosay. The Chief Baron slowly raised bis head, | made a s'gn to Baron Martin, which seemed to be immediately understood. Baron Martun pat on the black cap and pro- ceeded to pass sentence. Addressing the pris- oner he said he had been convicted of the crime of willfal murder. It was no part of tae daty of the court to express any opinion as to the verdict delivered by the jury. It was the province of the jury to decide upon the guilt or impocence of a prisoner butit was ususl forjudges to say when they concurred | He was author- | ized by the Lord chiet baron to say—and he | with the verdict of a jury. said it on hisown part also—ihat they were perfectly satisfied with the verdict which bad heen Geliver He merely said this toremove from the mind of the prisoner any hope he Inigbtentertain tha. he wonld live long 1m this World, but iosbow him that he wouid sooa be rewoved trom it by a violent death. He b:- sougnt him therefore toseek meanwhile wht peace he could with his Maker. forbea r to go to any particulars of the case, butthis he would say, thatif the facts hid Deen gone into more minutely it would have strergthened the case against the priso.er— would more materially have establish d@ his guilt. The learned baron mentioned one or two of the Jeadirg tacts ef the case, and said tbat Muller baying declared bis intention of gong to America, and that attracted by the waichand chain of Mr. briggs, he had com- milied the a k upon bim for the purpose of robbing Lim, in order to raise the money to pay lis passage to America. The learned baron | repeated that he must not expect to live munca jonger, and then sentenced him to death ia the usual form Mullerexbibited little sign of emoticon beyond @ shght twitching of the face. As he was aboutto be removed, Mr. Jones the governor ot Newgate. who was in the dock said «+My lord, the prisoner wishes to say some- thie zg,” Baron Martin—Very well. Muller._Lam quite satisfied with the ver- dict. Iti+accordiug to the law of the conatry; bal have been convicted not upon a true bat : BS isise siatement. It was rumored in the court thatthe prisoner | said: “If this sentence is carriedout I saall | die én innocent death;” but he uttered no such words, bor anything like them. HE DAY FIXED FOR HI8 EXECUTION. {From the Evening Standard.] When Muller had finished the few sentences be acdies:+d to the court on Saturday atter- boon he is conducted by a coupie of gaolers, @idfclowed by Mr. Jones, the zovernor of New through @ subterranean passage leacic gto the councemned cell. For the first lew moments atter he was taken out of the | dock bh 8s demeanor was thatof one who did rot fully realize his awful position: he seemed in 8 state of demi stupor. He didnot speak a sugle word, and it was not till sometime after be bad been lodged in his cell that any very great change in Lis conduct took place. From the moment the verdict was delivered his conn- temance became ect witha death like pallor, Woh of erwards passed away in @ paroxysm of uers, to which he gave Ven: soon atter Teaching his cell. This grief continued on him for tome considerable time, and it seemed sab- sequen'iy to restore his wonted composure, which he has since preserved with a becoming bumil.ty. He atterward partook of some slight Tetreebment, and Iny down to rest, but ne did not sleep much through the night. He arose early yesterd’y morning, and, according to custom, attended divine service in the prison cbapei. He appeared deeply absorbed im the exhortations ofthe reverend chaplain, and oth- erwise conducted bimself with an air that bespoke the deep sense of his approaching end. This moroing he was visited by the sheriff, who communica‘ed to him the fact that his execntion was fixed for this day tortaizhr namely, Monday the 1ithof November. He Teceived the awfnl message as if he fully expected it, but made great efforts to suppress the mward motion which tt necessarily created. He never once referred to the crime in any way whatever. The German Legal Protection Society in Londen are preparing 4 memorial tothe crown in bebalf of Muller on the ground of not being satisficd with the evidence. Exploit and Death of Lieutenant Walter Bowie. {From the Richmond Enquirer.) In the early part of September last, Lient. | Walter Bowie, of Maryland, at his own in- stance, received trom Col. Mosby orders to take ten men and cross into Maryland for a special service. Immediately upon receiving his orders, be selectyd ten men of hiscommand, crossed the Potomac at Matthias’ Point, and proceeded at once to Port Tobacco. Here he surprised and captured the Federal pickets, and paroled the men, with orders not to leave the town until the tullowing morning. Upon some of the horses thas seenred he Mouoted his men (fally armed and equipped) and proceeded vp through the State, visiting the prominent and wealthy Union men, de- Tiving them of their best and finest horses. assing neir Nis own home, he was joined by his younger brother, Brune Bowle, who was at home recruiting his health, having been gome time since severely wounded while serv- ing in our army. Having secured & drove of about sixty of the finest horses he could select, he passed entirely around Wasbirgton, and reached the neighbor- hood of Sandy Spring, in Montgomery county, Md., about five miles from the Potomac, where be cesigned recrossing. Here, finding that his Men were in need of many necessary articles of clothing. he permitted them, one ata time, to enter the store of a violent Union citizen and select sach articles as they absolutely needed, avoiding any wanton destruction. Having supplied bis men, he continaed his evourse for the river. He was immediately pursued by the sheriff of the county with a posse of men. Upon learning this tact. he or- dered his men, wi'h the horses, to cross the river as speedily as possible, his brother and himself remaining in the rear to keep the en- emy in cbeck tll the horses could be secured. Having dismounted, the two brothers proceed- ed acroes an open field for the purpose of as- certaining the exact position and numbers of their pursuers. As they neared the road they were fired Upon by Aman who was concealed behinda bra-h fence. Lieutenant Bowie received nine buckshot in his head and breast. After tall- ing, be arose upon bis hands and knees, and crawling thus several yards, called to his brother to meke his escape, and to carry the men and horses off sately, if possible. He adced, “Tell my mother that I loved her better tban son ever loved mother before, and that I die fghting for my country.” An undertaker in Brookville, Maryland, near Which piace the affair occurred. took the body and placed it in @ coffin, and conveyed it to the church known as “Stanley’s,” in Prince George's county. Here he was buried, Dis :uneral being attended by a large concourse Of ladies and gentlemen, his former neighbors Qnd friends. 1 is proper to add that his brother ‘war made prisener bu: the rest of the men got off» afely with the hore GLAR PROOFS. with .
