F.—The annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of the District of Celumbia, held last Hight, was wel attended, representatives being present from each of the thirteen lodges in the jurisdiction. The returns from the subordi- nates show the Order to be in a more flourish- ing condition than at any other period of its hhistory—the membership numbering over six- teen hundred. We wonder that the ladies do not avail them- Belves of this fine opportunity for learning calisthenics, with the fine apparatus at Brady’s Gymnasium, especially adapted for ladies’ use. sag a An UNFORTUNATE YOUNG GirRL.—Saturday Night, about o'clock, a very genteel young dady was found sitting on the steps of the Ist Presbyterian Church, 4¥ street, apparently in great distress. She would answer no ques- tions, and officers Coomes and Straub took her to the 4th Ward station house. Officer Grant, by persuasion, engaged her in conversation. When she said that hername is Clara Sher- man, that che arrived in this city Friday morn- Ing, from Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents @re dead, and in Boston she lived in the family of a man named Clark, a shoemaker. Two ‘weeks ago, Clark and family moved to this city, and wrote to her tocome to Washington mand live with his tamily. He promised to meet her at the depot on the arrival of the first train. She was belated and camein the next train. She lost her pocket-book with a small amount of money, and her baggage checks. Some one used the checks and got her baggage. Officer Crook took her ty his house to stop with his tamily until she heard trom Mr. Olark, or ob- tained proper employment. —— DESTROYING AND TEALING THE FURNI- ‘TURE OF THE PRESIDENT’S MANSION.—Persons of both sexes Lave been guilty of clipping pieces from the window curtains, sofa, lounge Bnd chair covers. They evan go so tar as to pull the papering from the walls, and even to Bteal heavy brackets from the windows and tassels from the curtains. The curtains in the East and Green Rooms are very badly cut up, and nineteen out of twenty brackets stolen from the windows of the East Room alone. ‘This practice is indulged with a view tosecure relics of visits to the President's Mansion, and Jadies and gentlemen of high standing haye been detected init. Three ladies, whose names Are not made known, have been canght in the Act within a few days, ore of whom fainted ‘when discovered. See A Sap CASE —Sunday morning, about six o’clock,a womar named Julia Irving, went to the Fourth Ward Station, very ill, evidently failing rapidly. She told officer McOolgan, ‘who had charge of the Station, that she nad taken Iaudanum. He asked her for the bottle, ‘which was about half full, and she gaye it up. She enid she had taken about as much as was deft. The officer went immediately for Dr. Green, who repaired promptly to her relief, and by proper remedies, succeeded in restoring her. Kelly and Edward Green on the yote of the State of New York, the latter gentleman havy- ing lost, commenced at 10 o’clock to saw a cord of pine wood in front of the Waverly House, on Sth street, opposite the Post Office. 1t was pretty generally known that the affair was to take place, and quite a curious crowd gathered to witness the cperation. Mr, Greenseemed to have but little knowledge of the use of the saw and made slow progress, and was obliged to stop semi-occasionally to blow. At2o’clock .
