Being loudly called for, the President appeared at a window and said: Friends and Fellow-citizens: Even before { had been informed by you that this compliment was paid me by loyal citizens of Pennsylvania friendly to me, I had inferred that you were of that portion of my countrymen who think that the best interests of the nation are to be sub- served by the support of the present Adminis- tration. I do not pretend to say that you who think so embrace all the patriotism and loyalty of the country, but I do believe, and, I trust, without personal interes!, that the welfare of the country does require that such support and indorsement he given. I earnestly believe that the consequences of this day’s work (if it be as you assure, and as now seems probable) will be to the lasting ad- vantage, if not to the very salvation of the country. I cannot at thishour say what has been the resuit of the election. Bui whatever it may be, I have no desire to modify this opin- ion, that all who have labored to-day in behalf of the Union organization. have wrought fer the best interests of their country and the world, not only for the present but for all fu- ture ages. 1 am thankfni to God for this approval of the people; but, while deeply gratified for this mark of their confidence in me, if I know my heart, my gratitude is free from any taint of personal triumph. Ido notimpugn the mo- tives of any one be ati! tome. Itis nopleas- ure to me to triumph over any one. But I give taanks to the Almighty for this evidence of the people’s resolution tostand by free government and the rights of humanity. es To ng Parp.—It will be recollected that at the first batue of Bull Run a number of car- riages, hacks, &c.,on the ground were taken possession of by the military, (the occupants who had gone out to see the fight being com- pelled to walk in,) to bring in the wounded, and while in the service of the Government some of them were damaged or lost. The owners, numbering about 50, have had their claims allowed and are about receivmg the amounts due them at the Treasury Depart- ment. We understand that the Government, in the settlement of these claims, have allowed $6 per day ior back, horses and driver—the trip ocen-* pying three days. Some of the hack owners interested say that they will not receive this money, but will appeal to Congress at the next session, alleging that their teams were se badly used up by the trip that they had to lay by for several days. Among these claims are also those of parties who had their carriages pressed in service at the second battle of Bull Ran. ———— RESULT of THE ReLIGIOUS REVIVAL IN GEORGETOWN THUS ¥AR.—Sunday was the regular Sabbath for communion at the Metho- dist Protestant Church, Congress street, arid, as usual, opportunity was offered for persons to unite with the chareh. Mr. Cur- tis, of Columbian College, preached; after which, six penitents presented themselves at the altar for prayer and instruction. ee nae SUSPICION OF Larcuny.—Yesterday, officer Crook, ot the Fourth Ward, arrested John Fisher on suspicion of grand larceny. Sus- picion was based upon his offering about 25 pounds ot horse-shoe nails fur sale at 30 cents ess than wholesale prices. Upon the evidence Fisher was sent to jail for court by Justice Giberson. Officer Crook took a search warrant and searched his residence, No. 122 F street, and found a lot of coats, pants, and vests, and carpenter's tools, all new; a quantity of similar articles which had been used, a section of gutta percha hose, and other articles. These articles are all at the Fourth Ward station, to be iden- tified and turned over to the Property Clerk. eS Benerit yor Curery Briie.—Charming, graceful, piquant, musical Cherry Belle, whose name is fit synonym of her attractiveness, is to have a complimentary benefit at Canterbury on Friday next, which will attract all her host of admirers, and these will form # host in themselves.
