SSS SEs ‘Tue New Catuoric CHURCH IN THE THIRD Warp.—The ceremony of laying the corner stone of the proposed Church of the Immacu- ‘late Conception, on M street, near Sth, took pe yesterday afternoon, a large congregation ‘ing assembled to witness the proceedings, among which were the children of St. Joseph's Male and St. Vincent's Female Orphan Asy- tums, accompanied by the Sisters of Charity, under whose charge they are. The ceremony of blessing and laying the stone was performed by Father Walter, of St. Patrick’s Church, assisted by Rev. Fathers Wiget, of St. Aloysius, and McCarthy, of St. Patrick's. In the stone were placed the Star and other papers, and specimens of the coin of the country, together with a copper tablet, inscrib- ed.—“This corner stone, laid on the 30th day of October, 1861, of the «Church ot the Immacn- | fate Conception,’ under the auspices of the Most Reverend Martin J. Spaulding, Archbish- op of Baltimore.” ‘The clergy then proceeded aroutd the foun dation walls, blessing them; after which, a most excellent discourse was delivered by Rev. Father Boyle, of St. Peter's Church, which closed the services. As we have before stated, the building to be erected is to be 75 by 25 feet, and of two stories, and will, after the main church is erected, which it is proposed to erect in afew years, be used for school purposes. There are many Catholics m this section of the city, and a eburch is much needed here. For the present the church will be onder the charge of Rev. Father Walter, but ultimately it will be erected into a separate parish. Jack- son, do. ————————— BURGLARY AND LARceNy Cases.—Yester- day morning, officer R. Johnson arrested Aaron Clark, Edward Ross, Turner Nugent, and Samuel W oodyard, colored, fer breaking into a@ house kept as a restaurant by Henry Thomas and Wm. (ueen, colored, on K street, 7th north. They were taken before Justice Thompson, when it appeared that the party planned the robbery, which was executed Saturday night, while the proprietors were at Market. Nugent entered the house. while the others watched to secure his escape trom arrest. Officer Johnson mauaged to secure all the parties in an hour atter the warrants were issued. Nugent con- tessed his guilt, and the others convicted them- selves. Justice Thompson committed all to jail for court. In the afternoon, Sandy Russell and Edward Douglass, colored, were arrested by officer Brewer, for breaking into stalls in Center Mar- ket, and robbing them of fruits and vegetables. Justice Thompson heard the evidence in the ease, and sent both to jail for court. Both these fellows are of the bootblack brigade that loiters about the market. ieee oes Sr. Atoysivs.—Very impressive services are being had at this church this week, the forty hours’ devotion being observed. Yesterday commenced the devotion of the +(.uarant Ore,” or Forty Hours’ Prayer, during which time the most holy sacrament was exposed and contin- ual prayers were recited. The services com- menced at I] a. m. yesterday, with u solemn high mass, and willend on Tuesday, at the same hour. Thesinging wasexcellent. Madam Kretschmar sang, besides the mass, the “Iofia- matus,” from Rossini’s “Stabat Mater,”: and “Gratias.” in her usual sweet voice, holding spell-bound all who were present. We noticed Mr. Geo. French back at his post, his tenor being ss rich as ever. Tuesday is the Feastof All Saints: at7 p.m, solemn v time Rossini’s “Stabat Mater” wili be sang by the fullchoir. On Wednesday. at 9a.m., the solemn commemoration of All Souls. > ATTEMPT aT ARsoN.—Sunday morning, at 1_ o'clock, Patrolmau Holiohan, of the Thira Ward, discovered fire in the house on Seventh street, between L aud M, occupied by Mr. Bauer. The fire wis between the weather- boards and plaster, and kad burned through. ‘With the aid of officers Sullivan and Maxwell he extinguished the fire without giving glarm. ‘The loss consisted principally in tearing Bway 1 considerable portion of the weather-boards to get at the fire, but the cost of repair will be small.
