LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Grover’s THEATER.—The engagement of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Williams is drawing aeara close, ard thisis the Iast night of the beantiful drama “All Hallow Eve.” To-mor- row is the benefit night ot Mr. and Mrs. Wil- liams, and we doubt not their friends will take advantage of the occasion to give substantial evidence of their appreciation ‘i Oantersvry.—“Cherry Belle” 1s growing in popularity at the Canterbury, while Miss ‘Laura Le Clare gives general satisfaction by her rendition ot popular ballads. The usual variety of song, dance, burlesque, ete., this evening. 4 Forp’s THEATER.—At Ford’s Theater this evening Shakspeare’s immortal tragedy of “Macbeth” will te enacted. Junius Brutus Rooth will personate the King of Scotland, and those who have witnessed his acting need noassurance thatit will be done creditably. Miss Alice Gray appears as Lady Macbeth. ass SSE LaET PRESIDENT LINCOLN SERENADED BY THE Loyal MARYLANDERS—SPERCH OF THE PRESiPENT.—In anticipation of a serenade to President Lincoln by the loyal Marylanders, a large crowd assembled in front of the White Houce last evening at an eariy hour. At half- past seven o'clock the loyal Maryland men of bast Washington assembled a.the Navy Yard: and shortly afterwards they moved in proces- siop, headed by an excellent military band, to Ninth street, where they were joined by a dele- gation of the Lincoln and Johnson Club. From Ninth street they moved to the Presi- dent’s House, and entered the enclosures by the west gate. After arriving in front of the White House the band played several patriotic airs, upon the conclusion of which loud and repeated calls were made for the President, when Mr. Lincoln made his appearance at one of thesec- ond story windows of the Mansion, and said : Friends and Fellow-Citizens: I am notified that this is a compliment paid me by the loyal Marylanders resident in this District. I infer that the adoption of the new constitution for the State furnishes the eccasion, and that in your view the extirpation of slavery consti- tutes the chief merit of the new constitution. {Applause.| Most heartily de I congratulate you and Maryland, and the nation and the world, upon theeyent I regret that it did not occur two years sooner, which, I am sure, would have saved to the nation more money ; than would have metall the private loss in- cident to the measure. [Cheers.] But it has come at last, and I sincerely hope its friends may fully realize all their anticipations of good from it, and that its opponents may, by its effects, be agreeably and profitably disap- pointed. A word upon another subject. Something said by the Secretary of State in his recent speech at Auburn, has been consirned by some into a threat thatif I should be beaten at the election I will, between thenandtheend of my constitutional term, do what I may be able to ruin the government. [Cries of no danger—we don’t believe it} Others regard the tact that the Chicago Convention adjourned not sine die, but to meet again if called to do soby apar- ticular individual, as the intimation of a pur- pose that if their nominee shall be elected he ‘will at once seize control of the Government. I hope the good people will permit themselves to suffer no uneasiness on either point. [Hear- ty cheers and cries of that’sse.”] 1am strug- gling to maintain the Government, not to over- throw it. ventothers from overthrowing it. [Cries of «That's so!’.] I therefore say that, if I shall live, 1 shall remain President until the 4th of next March, (tremendous cheering,| and that whoever shall be constitutionally elected there- for in November shall be duly installed as Pre- sident on the ith of March; and that in the in- terval I shall do my utmost that whoever is to hold the helm for the next voyage shall start ‘with the best possible chance of saving the ship. [Prolonged cheers]. ‘This is due to the people, both on principle and under the Constitution. Their will, con- Stitutionaily expressed, is the ultimate law for all. If they should deliberately resolve to Dave immediate peace, even at the loss of their country and their liberties, I know not the ower or the right to resist them. It is their own business, and they must do as they please with their own. I believe, however, they are still resolved to preserve their country and their liberties, and in this, in office or out of it, gam resolved to stand by them. [Applause.} I may add that, in this purpose to save the @ountry and its liberties, no classes of people seem so nearly unanimous as the soldiers in the field and the sailors afloat. [Immense ap- lause.] Do they not have the hardest of it? Who should quail while they do not! God bless the soldiers and sailors, with all their brave commanders. As soon as the President had concluded his remarks, loud and prolonged cheers were given. Some one in the crowd then proposed three cheers for the “free land and broken chains ef Maryland,” which were given with a hearty good will; after which the crowd again fell into line, and marched to the resi- dence of Secretary Seward, where loud calls ‘were made for that gentleman, but he was not at home. Cheers were given for the «Secretary ot State,” and the procession then moved to the house of Secretary Fessenden, of the Treasuty. Calls were made for Mr. Fessenden, when Mr. J. L. Henshaw appeared upon the steps of Mr. Fessenden’s residence, and said: “He was authorized by the Secretary of the Treasury to say that he was deeply sensible of the compli- ment paid him in their visit, but he was too unwell to appear in the open air; he, therefore, hoped they would excuse him.” ‘Tnree cheers were given for Mr. Fessenden. Three cheers were also giyen forthe down- fall ot gold, and three more added for green- backs. The crowd marched down Fifteenth street to the ayenue, gradually thinning, andthe East ‘Washington boys, with their band, proceeded homeward, eminently pleased with the success of their patriotic demonstration. ee GuHARGE oF GRAND LaRcENy.—Yesterday officer Leade, of the Third Ward, arrested Jno. Muarkling upon a charge of stealing six bead bags from Francis Dallay, an Indian, who was offering them for sale in the Northern Market. The case was taken before Justice Miller, when it appeared that Maurkling is a butcher in the market, and when the Indian was show- ing his fancy goods Murkling took the six bags from the Indian’s basket. The Indian asked for them, and Murkling refused to give them up. The Indian insisted, and Murkling raised his cleaver and threatened to split himif he did not leave. Tbe Indian told him to split away, as he would have his goods. Murkling Jett the market to go to a restaurant and the Indian followed him, when Murkling attempt- ed to knock himdown. The Indian followed te the restaurant, where Murkling offered to treat and make up, but the Indian refused. Murkling was sent to jail for court in the lar- ceby case, and was fined $10 for disorderly conduct. The Indian having said he was going to leave the city, the Justice committed him as a witness. — Union LEAGUE Mgetine Last EvEninc.— The president announced that Mr. Freeman, of Maine, who was to haye spoken before the club that evening, was unable to fulfil the en- gagement, but would address them at some future meeting. Also, thatthe Hon. Wm. A. Cook would speak before the club Monday evening. The committees of the various hospital as- sociations and other Union organizations were invited to meet with the marshals in the club room thiseyenipg, at 7 o’clock, to make ar- rangements for the torchlight procession Fri- day evening. ‘be meeting then adjourned to take part in the demonstration at the White House in honor of the adoption by Maryland of the free UCon- stitution. There will be no public meeting at the head- quarters this eyening. a ed Imrrovine THE V. R.
