Mr N.D. Larner presided, and Mr. J.S Hollingshead acted as secretary. After the cbairman had called the meeting to order, he asked for the reports ef committees. Mr. J. F. Madd, from the collection commit- tee, reporied that he had collected #563, and re- ceived subscriptions tor $155. Mr. Parker, from the same committee, re- ported that he had received subscriptions for $233, and bad collected #45 in cash. Mr. Z. Hunt, collection committee, reported that he had met with poor success during the day from the factihathe had been operating in tbat portion of the ward occupied by the poorer ciusses. Manyof whom he called upon ‘were unable to obtain their pay before Satur- day, but he succeeded in getting $101. Tr. G.E. Sharretts, on behalf of himself and Mr. John Meigs, of the same committee, said that they also visited a portion of the ward where the poor people lived, and that they did not expect to get much, but their efforts were crowned with success, and they obtained #110, Mr. Sharretts remarked that these Lp were willing to give what they could, and these who were able would do as well, the ward could be cleared ot adraft. Ten thousand dol- jars was all that was wanted, and if that sum could not be raised ip the ward the citizens ought to be drafted. any of the women with whom he conversed said it was disgraceful thatsome of the men did not subscribe, and they expressed a determination to send their husbands to the meeting. Mr. George H. Usssidy here arose and said that he was not subject to draft in the ward, but ke had $50 tocontribute. Mr.C. handed the bey ir to the treasurer, and was greeted ‘with loud applause. Mr. Job Angus announced that he was re- ‘uested to put down the names of Mr. J. P. jolow and Thomas and John Baker for | 25 each, and that he had received $10 from a | gentleman of the Fourth ward, and $10 from another of tne Third. another for #5. ‘The chair stated that as far as reported those ‘who were exempt from the draft subscribed more liberally than the others. This ought not be, remarked the speaker, and the $10,000 which ‘would clear the ward must be raised, or the | draft must certainty take place. The Third | ‘ward would be the iast drawn, and they would perhaps have until Wednesday to raise the | necessary sum. The quota of tne ward was mouch lower than auy other, and for the ceedit of the ward they shouidget tne57 men. Those who were liable to the draft ought to help | themselves, however, by subscribing. ‘The chair invited gentlemen to come forward And subscribe, when the tollowing gentlemen responded: G. A. Uassidy presented to the chairman | of the meeting a certificate from Captain Put- nam, showing that he (Cassidy) had enlisted three men into the Untied States service, and laced them to the credit of the Third Ward. Jpon the chairman making the fact known to the meeting, Mr. Cassidy was greeted with joud applause, amid cries of “You are a brick.” r. T. B. Britain, of the Hanson Exemption ub, entered the room and announeed to the ‘Meeting that their club had just passed a reso- tution allowing auy member who desired todo soto withdraw his $100 and place itin the ward funds to fill the quotas. He had $100 in the club, which the Third Ward coald have if the meeting thought Lewd could raise enough money to clear the ward. The Chair (Mr. Larner) stated that if they could mot raise money enough to exempt, all the moneys that had been subscribed would be Teturned. The announcement of Mr. Britain ‘would bring in $10 from Mr. Charles Kioman nd $100 from Mr. Monroe, both of whom were members of tne Hanson club. Several gentlemen of the Hanson club here rose and transferred their $100 to the ward fund. Mr. G. Sharretts was glad to see the exemp- tion men open their eyes and put their money in the proper channel. That fand had been detrimental to the interests of the city, and had stopped enlistments. for as long as gentlemen fed inate money in the clubs they felt secure. At this point some one in the back part of the Toom sang out, “Are youa member!” [Loud laughter } Mr. Sbarretts.—«No, sir; and I am glad of it.” [Renewed laugoter.] Mr. Sharretts then moved that a vote of thanks be tendered to the Hanson club; which ‘Was agreed to. Mr. J.S. Hollingshead said that he under- stood that the resolution passed by the Han- son Club made it obligatory upon its members to withdraw their money before the draft. ‘Therefere those who had it there would draw iton to-morrow, (to-day) as that would be the last day they would Dave. Mr. G. Sbarretts suggested that some of the gentlemen present should lay the matter before the members of the club and get them to con- tribute their money to the Ward fund. Mr. J.G Gibson said that he was a member of the Bacon Clob, and was willing to give nis Ble. the purpose of considering a resolation similar to that passed by the Hanson Club, & commit- tee ought to be appointed to wait on the club. Mr. Sharretts moved that a committee be ap- pointed to wait ou the members of the Hanson amd Bacon clubs and solicit them to contri- bute. The chair appointed Mr. Job Angus on part of the Hauson club, and Messrs. J. G. Gibson and R. JoDnson op part of the Bacon club. Mr. Gideon Larner here announced that he Was not subject to draft having been drawn at the former draft, but as the Third Ward was to | be the banner waved be would contribute 225. it waa ther announced that the amount re- ceived up to the present time, by cash and col- lections, was about 85,010.
