a | SC&PRROPORALS. THE EVENING STAR. Tux Londom Tixus on Guneeal SHERMAN- — London Times, of the 22d alt. has the following, which, while illustrating its usual blundering eharaeter as 4 prophet, ae the foreign estimate of the greatness of Gener: he : jertaking: SNopedy tnegined that a Northern army eould penetrate so far into the South and main- tain itself so securely as Sherman’s army bas done for months together. Neither his distance from the base of his operations, nor the alfi- culties of obtaining supplies, nor any of the Bumerous embarrassments incidental to 8 posi- tien tn @ hostile country, have impede: his proceedings. He has not actually captured Atlanta, nor are his prospects of success so good, perhaps, as they were 4 short time ago; if he is defeated it will only be by hard hting, exactly as he might have been defeat - ed at Chattanooga or Murfreesbcro’. He can hold his own in the heart of Georgia, and en- eounter the Confederates on equal terms. He may yet be repnised, but he has shown that there is nothing impracticable in anexpedition which would have been thyught desperate at ap earlier period of the war. &7 A few days ago, while one of the steam- ers of the St. Louis and Memphis packet com- pany was lying at Haydock’s wharfboat wait- ing for the passengers who arrived on the even- ing train, a young gentleman from the country who evidently had been newly married, marched sboard the steamer with a baxom e@ountry Iacs hanging on his arm, and, going directly up {to the clerk, cried, “Scranger, can you give us accomodation on your boat? You see my wife and I have just got spliced, and ‘we're going to take a pleasure ride.’’ “Do you ‘want a berth!’ politely inquired the clerk. *A birth!” stammered forth the gentleman from the country, “a birth!’ Well, I should rather think not, stranger; for you see we’ve only been married twenty four hours! No— want a place to stay all night—a bed, if you’ye got such a thing on the boat.” WA lady and gentleman in Liverpoo!, Eng., Were disturbed in their slumbers recently by the noise of a slight move under the bed. The Jady expressed alarm, but her somewhat ery caro sposo said, “Oh, it is only one of the dogs,” and putting his hand down by the side of the bed, he d «Lion, Lion’? and Bie hand being licked, after a moment the pair ‘Were satisfied and they soon slumbered again peacefully. 1m the morning the feund that all their money and jewelry bad disappeared, and it was clear that the lick had been a dernier pSoaped of an ingenious biped concealed under e bed. A YANKEE TRICK.—A few days ago & pedlar sold a Broadway merchant a quantity of twine which he warranted all linen, and for which he was to receive ninety cents a pound. The twine was weighed and the pedlar was to call mext day and receive his Inthe mean- time it had been discovered that the twine was made of Manilla paper, strongly resembling linen. The article answers well the purpose for which it was intended, the tying up of small packages, but becomes useless when moistened. The pedlar has not yet called for Ris money or his twine.—Albany Argus. s7-The discipline in the camp of the rebel prisoners at Elmira is very strict, no inter- course being allowed between the prisoners and outsiders. But an enterprising individual who has ground near the camp, is constructing an observatory whence for a fee the curious can obtain a view of the captured rebels. A “Patn-KILLER.”—Melville A. Bronson, et Fall River, Mass., died very suddenly on Monday evening. He applied some pain-killer to a defective tooth, and a few minutes afver raised bis hand to his head and exclaimed, “O, my head!” fell forward on the floor and died almost instantly. 7 A daring attempt was made to fire a Government warehouse in St. Louis last week, by bai in an infernal machine, which exploded. he fire was extinguished by the Watchman and others, before it had gained much headway. The warehouse coxtained ever a million dollars worth of Government stores. ww The wall of a New York tenement house fell a day ortwoago. It contained scores of Trsons but almost miraculously noone was injured. OFFICIAL. Headquarters Military District of Washington, Provost Marshal’s Office, Washington, D. C., Sept. 12, 1861. General Orders, No. 4. Information having been received at these Headquarters, that many persons engaged in the Clothing and Furnishing business in this District, have frequently sold citizens’ clothes to enlisted men, upon the men exhibiting cer- tificates of discharge from the United States service ; and as such discharges have, in most cases, proved to be spurious and forged or be- longing to some other person than the one present- ingit. It 1s therefore Ordered, Thatso much of General Order No. 3, issued from these Headquarters, that relates to the sale of clothing to enlisted men, is so amended as to prohibit the sale of clothing to any enlisted man upon discharge papers that he may present, until said papers have been examined and a special permit obtained frem these Headquarters. Any violation or evasion of this Order, will be promptly and severely punished, and the eficnders subjected tothe full penalty attached to the disobedience of this and other existing orders relating thereto.
