> LOCAL NEWS. AMUSEMENTS TO-NIGHT. Vanintixs.—Fitz Simmons’ new sensation drama. “The Seventh street Dressmaker, or «he Union Martyr Girl,” takes well. At least «his is indicated by the large houses nightly in attendance. The play is local one, and all who delight in “sensation” should see it. Be- ides the play there is 8 good concert hall bill. OanrTersvRy.—Millieand Clara Fowler che rest of Mr. Lea's New Orleans company, acluding pe Ward, the olog dan -ers, elicit much iause nigeey: The Fow- tur sisters have appeared here before, and have always given much satisfaction. The rest of the company are good, and the bill for to-night is decidedly attractive. Grover’s THRATER.—‘The School tor Scan- dal” is announced for to-night. Mr. Wm.War- ren appears as “Sir Peter Teazle,” Mr. Chas. Barron as + Charles Surface,” Miss Josephine Orton as “Lady Teazle,” and Miss Emily Mes. tayer as “ Mrs. Candor,” and they will be s tained by & good company. The play is an old one, but always acceptable, and especially will will it be so im the hands of the Warren com*cy combination. Forb's THEATER.—Another big house last night, and the Florences as attractive as ever. For to-night + The Irish Lioc,” “The Young Actress” and “The Happy Man @ an- nounced. A good bill, deserving of @ large au- dience, which it will no doubt 5 for it must be admitted that there are no better Irish comedians on the stage than the Floren- ces. Pic-Nios.—At Beckert’s neymen Bakers give a -nic this afternoon and evening, and at ashington Park the Journeymen Plasterers do likewise. Either Will be worth attending. pao EE) LAYING THE UORNEE-STONE OF CALVARY Cuvurcu.—The weather having proved mere dJavorable than anticipated yesterday, the cer- emony of laying the corner-stone of the Cal- vary Baptist Church (corner Sth and H streets) ‘was carried out. Rey. Dr. Samson led the exercises by readin, a chapter from the Bible, and he wag followe: by vy. Dr. Gillette, of the First Bapust Church, who offered an appropriate prayer. Rev. Mr. Howlett, pastor of Calvary Church, then stated that, owing to the state of the wea- ther, he would dispense with the delivery of an address, which he had prepared for the oo- casion, and confine himself to a few remarks for general information. This new congregation was organized in 1862, seon after the commencement of the re- bellicn. There were then thirty-five members. Since that period, abont one hundred have bee: added by conversion and by letters from other churches. Three members of this communion have died, viz: A young man, who bore cheer- fu} testimony to the truth of the Gospel; thena young lady, who also rejoiced in her Redeem- er, and the third was the late Mrs. Amos Ken- dall. Here the speaker delivered a brief but beautiful eulogium on the exalted Christian character of that deceased lady, and added, that could they have been present on this occa- sion none would have been more interested in these proceedings. Their blessed spirits, how- ever, might be invisible witnesses of this inter- esting scene. Referring to the spiritual and temporal pros- perity of the church, the preacher announced the liberality of their venerable friend and member, the Hon. Amos Kendall. That gen- tleman had purchased for them this lot, ata cost of $9,000; had made provision for their pastor for a period of eight years, and placed at their disposal a building fund of $13,000. To other liberal gentlemen the church was also indebted. The preacher then affirmed the loyalty of his church and congregation. He weuid throw to the breeze the banner of the cross of Ohrist, immediately under it the starry banner of our country. nder them he would live and die. He hoped to witness the day when, from the East and West, the North and South, our peo- ple would come in and worship in this temple. .@ then closed by reading resolutions of loyal- ty to this Government, adopted many months since by this congregation. The articles to be placed in the corner-stone ‘were then cealed up in an appropriate box and deposited in their proper place. (These arti- cles were described in the Star of yesterday. ] ‘The services were then closed by those in at- tendance singing the doxology, and by 4 ben- ediction by Rey. Mr. Howlett. Garden the Jour- ———— MEETING OF THE EXEMPTION FUND Ass0- CIATION.—A meeting of the Washingten City Exemption Fund Association was held in the Council Ohamber last evening, (Mr. Canfield, ‘Vice President, in the chair,) pa was attended by about one hundred persons. The Secretary, Mr.W. H. Pope, presented his resignation, which was accepted; and Mr. RB. 5S. Davis was elected to fill the vacancy. Mr. Hurley offered a resolution directing the ‘Treasurer to give to each person who has de- posited his money a receipt, which shall be presented or accounted tor Betore the money is returned, if there should be no draft. Mr. Bacon stated that it would be impossible for him to comply with the resolution, should it pass. The 500 names of the signers had been copied, and were now in the hands of the rinter, who would have the list ready by hursaay night. Mr. B. stated that transcribing the names from the book proved to be & ee a man being employed two days at it, and he was occasionally aided by others. The resolution was debated by Messrs. Hur- ley, Dnetrick, Davis, Holtzlander, and others, and it was finally tabled by a vote of 34 to 24. Mr. Harley said a number of the members ‘were destined to draw prizes, and the draft would come as sure as night follows day. A draft, he had authority for stating, would come off within the next fifteen days for 4,450, and this did not speak well for the city, with all due respect to the | Scat officers of the as- sociation, Messrs. Lioyd and Uanfield. The enrolling officers have been in the hell holes and bawdy houses, and enrolled men who ‘were reposing in the arms of harlots, and had enrolled men whose homes werein Mexico. Ifthe city authorities would take hold now, the quota could be reduced, and he believed the District did not owe asingleman. Ona visit to the Provost Marshal General's Office ‘with a member of Congress, he had seen masses of documents from every Congressional Dis- trict, but the District had nothing toshow. He believed the District had furnished its fall quota, and it was not yet too late for the city authorities to see that due creditis given for enlistments in the navy. The District had no Yrepresentative in Congress, but some shouldbe moving in the matter. The District was com- pletely disfranchised, while the territories of the West had the right to speak if not to vote. Recruits forthe navy who rightly should go to our quota, had been gobb! up by men —_ Massachusetts, New York and Pennsyl- yania. ‘The meeting adjourned, subject to the call of the President. ee ALEXANDRIA Ar¥ains.—U. 8. Thedsy’s work was the largest, ‘we believe, yet accomplished by the court. ‘The cases disposed of were as follows: The U.S. vs. A. Leigh; W. H.
