THE EVENING STAR. ‘@. D. WALLACH, Editor and Propricter. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY.......... SEPTEMBER 5, 1864. WF READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGR. @BR OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TBELE- @EAPHIO AND OTHER MATTER. EXTRA. = FROM THE FRONT. ——s>s ture with a Large Num- rs—Oesperate Battle of August 31 befere Atlanta—The Enemy vem with Severe Less, Includi ee Generals, Hardee, Anderson, a Patten—The Rebels Admit Heavy Lesses om the Weldon Road. Se ee There is no news of importance from the Army of the Potomac. Deserters report that Atlanta is in our pos- Session, with a large number of prisoners; that Richmond papers contain accounts of a battle there onthe Sistof August; that our troops ‘were at first repulsed, but finally drove the ememy back with heavy loss, including three generals—Anderson, Patten and Hardee. They also say their loss in the fight with the second corps on the Weldon railroad was very heavy fat that they took a good many prisoners. General Lew. Wallace, in company with General Grant, visited General Warren at the @ront to-day. Euamor gives him an important command in that department. IMPORTANT FROM EUROPE, U jag: er Georgia while Cruising under the British F Naw Yor, Sept.5.—The steamship City of Washirgton, with Liverpool dates to the 25th mult, bas arrived Lowpon, Aug. 26.—The frigate Niagara Seized the rebel pirate Georgia twenty miles off Lisbon, and puts prize crew on board and Sethe Niagara Taaded e ara Janded the captain and crew of the ‘Georeta at Dover. o i The Georgia, when seized, was under the British flag, and the captain entered a protest against the seizure. Theeventcreated much controversy. Itis ‘rumored that the capture was effected under the consent of the British Government. There as much difference of opinion as to the legality ether capture, but general satisfaction is ex- { Pressed, Arrived from Baltimore, the Clarendon, at Falmouth. GRwsDOASTLE, Aug. 26—The ship D. S. OBoate, of Portiand, from Bassein for Fal- mouth, was lost June 15th. The crew is all Supposed to have gone down with her except- ing ons. Ther FALL OF ATLANTA—A Wet Blanket for Seme Folks.— What's the matter with the Demo- cratic Association? They met with scarcely a @ucrum on Saturday night, and adjourned early, with no enthusiasm and no accessions to their membership. Not a word was said @ongratulatory over the capture of Atlanta, aoe Lprteecle from all appearances, could not ave mm more unacceptable in Ri: than tt was in Parker's Hal 1 ciooad Fiwaxciat.—The New York Commercial Advertiser of Saturday evening says: The stock market, as usual on Satarday, opens cull Excepting Governments, stocks ‘were depressed and generally lower, rather from the operations of strong “bear” combina- tions than from any other cause. The fall of Atlanta has an improving effect oa Government stocks, which, however, is ohecked by the decline in gold, and the tone of advices from Germany, reporting that the Market there has been, for the present, fally supplied with American securities. 6 Evening Post says: The f ll of Atlanta has imparted a gratify- aug activity tothe national securities, while the price of gold bas, of course, fallen consid- erably. La‘e yesterday afternoon Jarge sales took place at 244, and this morning heavy urchases were effected at 237. The brighten- Bg prospects of peace have the effect of de. The Express says: There was great excitement in the gold room this morning, incident to the military news in the morning papers. The average fall in gold from yesterday afternoon is about 12 per cent. At one time it amounted to 15 per cent. Not much was sold in the Foreign Ex- @hanges after the mails for this day's steam- ers were closed. Thecurrency rates are, of course, upset by the violent changes in gold. At the Stock Exchange the Government Stocks were a fraction higher on the 6's of 161, and rather lower and dull on the 5.20's. ‘The advices from Germany by this morning’s mews, are to the effect of a temporary decline @t Frankfort. Mr.Cuaszon THE BaLTIMORE NOMINATIONS. —The efforts of various persons to create ill ‘will between the friends of Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Chase, or to produce the impression that Mr. Chase is tial to some movements for a mew Union Presidential Convention, or to boister up ee cary ty that Mr. Chase is privy to any nego! ions for the overthrow or ‘withdrawal of Mr. Lincoln, are conclusively met and answered by a hers letter from him to friends who asked advice. This im- portant letter bears date of Aug. 12, and the Portion of public interest is as follows : “I do not see any reason for believing that the great cause to which we are all bound, can be promoted any better or as well by with- drawing support from the nomination made at Baltimore, and no .cause of dissatisfaction, iowever strong, will warrant any sacrifice o! cause. What future circumstances may require or warrant, cannot now be foreseen, nd need not now be comsidered. I partica- darly desire my friends, to do nothing, or say mothing that can create the impression that there is @ny personal difference between Mr. Lincoln and myself, for there is none. All the differences that exist are on public questions, Bad bave no private bearing.” Tae Deart is New YorE.—No orders have yyet reached the city relative to the proposed draft, and there now seems to be every proba- Dility of at least a postponement. BECOMMENDATIONS BY THE PRESIDENT. ni The President has issued sundry recommen- dations and orders in relation to tha recent successes by the United States forces at Mo- bile and Atlanta, from which the following is extracted: EXxEcuTIVE Mansion, Sept. 3, 1861—The signal success that Divine Providence has recently wouchsafed to the operations of the United States fleet and navy in the harbor of Mobile, and the reduction of Fort Powell, Fort Gaines, and Fort Morgaa, and the glorious achievements of the army under Major Gen- eral Sherman, in the State of Georgia, resulting in the capture of the city of Atlanta, call for devout acknowledgement to the Su- preme being in whose hands are the destinies of nations. It is therefore requested that on next Sunday, in all places of public worship in the United States, thanksgiving be offered to Him for his mercy in preserving our national existence against insurgent rebels, who eo long have been waging armed ‘war against the Government of the United States, for ita overthrow; and also that prayer be made for the Divine protection to our brave soldiers and their leaders in the field, who have so often and so gallantly perilled their lives in battling with the enemy,” eto. THE DRAPT IN THE DISTRICT. Tp to 11 o’clock to day no order had been re- ceived by Captain Putnam directing him to proceed with the draft. If the order is re- ceived to-day,as expected, the drawin will doubtless commence to-morrow. The steamer Daniel Webster arrived here this morning from City Point, having left there yesterday ati0a.m. She brought up the army mail and a few passengers. Nothing of greatimportance has transpired etthe front for a week past. All remained quiet up to yesterday morning with the excep- tion of some slight skirmishing between our pickets and a body of rebel cavairy, which made its appearance on Saturday near Ream's Station. Our pickets held their ground, and ihe enemy soon fell back This is the first trip made by the Daniel Web- ster on the mail route, she having taken the place of the Keyport. She is a thorongh sea- going vessel, and is under command of Captain Charles Deering, who leaves nothing undone to provide for the comfort of his passengers. The Webster is provided with excellent sleeping accommodations, having 112 berths and 14 state rooms. She has two finesaloons and is reported to be very fast. REFUGEES FROM RICHMOND, Within a wee! ast the number of refugees reporting at the Provost Marshal's office has been considerably increased. These refugees are mostly aliens. This morning some three or or four from Richmond made their appearance at Col. Ingraham’s office, and were released upon taking the oath ot fidelity. They repeat the old tale of «hard times” at Richmond, and say that there is no employment there for mechanios, outside of the government shops. MOBE REBEL DESERTERS. Another batch of ten deserters from the rebel army reached here yesterday, having come within the lines of the Army of the Potomac They were sent to the Soldiers’ Rest to await an examination, but will doubtless be released to-day on taking the oath of allegiance.
