Mr. J. W. Raynor. one of the most pular of the troupe will take a benefi!, and x this occasion only Mr. J. J. Peck has vol- unteered. To-morrow afternoon there will be a matinee, and in the evening the last oppor- tunity of seeing this troupe will be afforded. bE Sa Frep. Dovciass’ Lecture.—This colored orator had quite an ovation last night at the isth street Presbyterian Church, which was literally crowded by colored and white. He ‘was introduced by Rev. Henry H. Garnett (colored) in a few remarks. Mr. Donlass has & good voice, distinct articulation, and is not a bad off-hand speaker. He used no notes, and announced that he had not come prepared with a lecture, but would make a few practical sug- gestions as to the position of the white man and the colored man in this country. The relation existing between the colored race and the white was now, as it long bad been, and long would be, the great problem to be solved by this people. It was the great ques- tion before the war, had been the great «ues- tion during the war, and he somr times feared it would be the great question after the war, for he had yet tosee the policy sufficiently com- prehensive to enforce its riddance—that is, to expel it from the public arena, the platform, and the press. It would never be removed from discussion, never be putat rest, until jus- tice, entire and absolute, should be established throughout the land. The speaker noticed tne many times slavery Dad (as was said) received its death blow. First, when the Declaration of Independence ‘was promulgated. Next, when colored sol- diers fought in the war of the Revolation; and afterwards, when they fought in 18/2, and wher Gen. Jackson, in an address, called the colored soldiers ‘ellow-citizens. But slavery had survived all these “death blows,” and now again the colored man had on the “Federal blue,” and it was said this was the deatn blow ofslavery. But slavery would not be killed out until equal and exact justice was meted out to tbe colored man. The speaker spoke of Gen. Banks’ mode cf conducting af- fairs with regard to the negro in Louisiana, and argued that it still kept them in a condi- tion of slavery. He did not ask that kind of justice whic some said they claimed, viz: so- cial equality with the whites. The negro did not desire that; they only asked to be let alone and work out their own destiny. He claimed that the colored people would be the best ele- ment for the preservation of the Union in the South after the rebellion was crushed. In conclusion, he referred to his own politi- cal pesition, and said: “It will be time enough to declare for whom I will vote whenall the candidates shall be in the field. But ene thing is certain, I shall do nothing for compromise ‘or peace men. The election ef a Copperhead would place the black mar in & worse position than before the war; would insure a deathly silence upon the subject of anti-slavery for twenty years, and render mob violence the certain portion of all who would speak for the black man. I wonld ‘rather the ills we haye than fly to those we know not of.’” eer TuE “UNTERRIFiED” PRorosE TO RaTIFY.— The committee of thirteen appointed at the last meeting of the “National Democratic Associa- tion,” to make arrangements for a ratification meeting, to be beld in this city on the i7th of September next. held a meeting last night at the rooms of the association. Mr. Florence (chairman) proposed to make the affair a grand one, and suggested that it be continued for four days, beginning Friday, 16th, at night, with a display of fireworks, on the Mall south of the Presidential Mansion- and ending on the night of the following Mors- day. with a grand torch-light procession. ‘This was objected to as not practicable—in- volving too much time and expenditure, which might be employed more profitably otherwise. After considerable discussion the following propositions from Pr. Clayton was agreed ‘apon :—That the meeting be confined to the day Propored, and that the exercises consist of pub- ic speaking at the Capitol grounds from eleven to three o'clock, and speaking at night from the Portico of the City Hall The following Committees were appointed : On Firance—Messrs. Smith, Adams, Clayton, Brereton, and Lakener. On Correspondence—Messrs. Florence, Clay- ton, and Flynn. On Transparencies and Decorations—Messrs. Davis, Minnix, Galt, Adams, and Lyon. Adjourned to meet at the call of the chairman, ey ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS.—About 6 o'clock lastevening, & man named Pearse, employed in the paint shop of the Manassas railroad de- ot, was accosted, on the corner of Wolfe and ater streets, by 8 woman named Simpson, ‘who proceeded to draw a six-barrelled re- volver, witn the evident intention of shooting Pearse. He, however, rushed up toher, and seized her arms, thereby preventing her from accomplishing any mischief, and the revolver ‘was wrested from her by parties interfering. Subsequently the enraged woman assanited Pearse with his dinner bucket, making the small crockery fly about his ears in an alarm- ing close proximity. accompanying her actions ‘with some very severe threats and ungenteel imprecations. We understand that the affair grew out of &n alleged improper intimacy on the part of Mr. Pearse with. . Simpson's danghter. The case came up before the Mayor this afternoon for trial. ‘We understand that a person was descried from the deck of the mortar schooner on Tues- day pight, making his way past the vessel teward tbis shore, in a small boat; that he was commanded to halt, and refusing, he was fired upon several times by the sentinel. Not heed- ing the firing, he made his way to the shore | without harm, and escaped.—Alrez. Journal, August 18. ee Fink ENTERTAINMENT IN PRosPRcT.—Com. Foote, his sister Miss Eliza Nestel, and Col. Small, three of thesmallest people in the world, | will commence a series of entertainments at Odd Fellows’ Hall, on Monday evening next. ‘These little people have been here before, and Dave delighted thousands by their original en- tertainment. Com. Foote is a grand comedian, actor and dancer, as indeed are the other two little people, and all who have seen them know that they are refined and intelligent. With these little people, (and who wil] appear in the entertainments,) are Miss M. ©. Ellinger, the justly celebrated tdy pianist, and our old | friends, the Continental Vocalists, Franklin and Smitb, and Prof G. H. Brooks, the blind Pian- ist and Violinist. The first two entertainments ‘will be for the benefit of charitable institutions. A few mornings since, when a boat con- taining a regiment arrived at the Sixth street ‘wharf, it was beset by a small army of the fe- male pediars, each armed with baskets of bread and frnit, the former being disposed of tor thirty cents per loaf, when it is retailed at eight cents, and the peaches at the rate of three | to and four for ten cents, when they were retail- | ing in market at ten to fifteen cents per quar- ter-peck. rae eee THe National INTELLIGENCER —By the @nnouncement of Mr. Johu T. Boyd, now stationed in Alexandria, has been picking up considerably lately, about 150 recruits have joined it, filling up the four companies, to which the regiment ‘was cut down over a year since, and forming nucleus for one or two other companies. There are but few men now belonging to it put who have re-enlisted, and there is but little donbt that the efforts now being made by the officers and men will be crowned with snecess, and soon we may have the pleasure of stating that the regiment is full. ei ea FARRELL.
