Let it be a remembrancer indeed, or if there is one performer at this hall, in the biack cork line of business who deserves well at the bands of amusement lovers itis thissame John Mulligan. Ever at his post and aiways ‘well up in his parts, he does more for health than a score of doctors, for noone can fail to laugh and be happy when Malligan’s form ap- Pears upon the boards. All of the company ‘will assist at his benefit. ; Vanreries.— The Six Degrees of Crime,” is the drama here at this time and is well per- formed. Besides the company of dancers, singers, Ethiopians and all connected with the hall appear nightly in asplerdid bill. Goand see them to-night. Curisry’s MINSTRELS are still delightin, gay and happy crowds at Ford’s Theatee George Christy is superb as in other years, and hhis capacity to amuse seems to increase hour- Jy, and his auditors are always delighted. Pic-Nics.—The Sti Matthews School pie-nic takes place at the Park out Seventh street, this afternoon and to-night. There will be good music, palatable refreshments, and much en- joyment generally. Besides the cause is one Worth siding. At Loefiler’s City Garden the Merry Social Association give a pic-nic this afternoon and to-night also, and it too, will undoubtedly, be & most enjoyable affair. a MEETING OF THE DemMocRATIC Assocta- TION.—An adjourned meeting of the Demo- cratic Association, was held last evening, at Parker’s Hall, Judge Mason presiding. After a few preliminaries ao invitation was Yead from the Democratic club of Dabuque city, Lil, inviting the Association to meet with them on the 25th inst. No action was had, and the president announced, as next in order, the finding ont how many of the delegates ap- os at & previous meeting would attend ie Ohicago Convention, and to determine ‘what their action in that body should be. At this point Hon. Amos Kendall made his ‘Appearance on the platform and said: He was not certain when appointed that he would at- tend the Convention. He was a member of Bnother party—the conservative—and they had done him the honor toelect him chairman of one of their committees. The late New York meeting expressed his views. He wasa Mc- Olellan man, (applause, not but that he would ‘yote for any other man, but he believed «-Little Mac” to be the most available. The Adminis- tration can only be broken down by a good man, which was the best of platforms. By a good man he meant one thoronghly opposed to the present dynasty, and such was General McClellan. With these views he should at- tend the Convention. The calling of the roll of delegates was then Toceeded with, and all, with the exception of r. Ennis, responded, and declared their in- tention to attend the Convention. Dr. Charles Allen here introduced a series of Yesolutions, declaring the party ‘fully and un- reservedly for peace.” The resolutions gave rise to considerable dis- Cussion. Justice J. D. Clark thovght it was casting anchor ahead to declare tor an uncon- ditional peace. The first thing was to get rid of the present corrupt administration. He didn’t want a democrat with an adjective. He ‘wanted a Constitutional democrat. Dr. Alen defended his resolutions, and con- Siderable debate ensued, during which the Dr. declared he would make every proposition to the South to come back again, but it *hey failed he would not prosecute a war against a | people who hed aright to declare what form \ of government they would live under. He ‘would make the coming election a test, and | those who voted against peace should fight, and those who voted for it should resist any gneans that would make them fight. Hon. Amos Kendall thought that was just ‘what our opponents would have us say—that ‘we were willing to d‘vide the Union if acom- Promise could not be had. Let us firsteelect our mep; unite to put down down this iniqui- tous Administration, and then we can do this or any other thing that may be practicable. The only way by which the country could be Saved was to break down the present Admin- istration, and the only way to do it was to Bnite. Hon. T. B. Florence was for peace uncondi- tionally. If it could not be brought about by Compromise he was for peaceanyhow. Break up the present Administration, and then it could soon be settled. If wecould not agree to live together we could agree to be a frater- Ps people, and he was for this with all his eart. T. G. Clayton offered another series of reso- lutions as a substitute for those offered—de- claring the party to be for peace, but not un- conditionally, and endorsing Geo. B. McClel- Jan. Finally, the whole subject was dismissed by yote to lay over indefinitely. A resolution to support unanimously the Nominee of the Chicago Convention wasalso Jaid over. Just here Mr. Clayton arose to make some sf aepegts with regard to his resolutions. Mr. Florence interrupted. Mr. Clayton thought he was entitled to the oor. < Mr. Florence, however, insisted upon speak- ing, and Mr. Clayton finally gave way, shaking hhis finger at Mr. Florence, and saying, “I'll Temember you, sir! You choked me down, gir. I'll remember you.” Mr. F. denied any intention to choke down; but Mr. Clayton accepted no apology, and finally withdrew from the hall indignantly. Mr. Florence’s object in arising was to move the appointment of a committee to make pre- parations for a grand ratification meeting here on the 17th of September, which was agreed to. After which the association adjourned. , _ ALARM TELEGRAPH.—For the first time in the city of Washington, & Jarge church bell ‘was struck by means of electricity with a fifty- pound hammer, yesterday evening, from the Central office of the fire alarm telegraph. The Bpparatus in the tower of the 13th street Baptist Church being completed, the contracters at- tached the wires to the main battery, and in the presence and hearing of several gentlemen, @t seventeen minutes past six o'clock, strack the church bell, clearly and distinctly, striking 28, the number of the box on the corner of 10th and H streets. The most beautiful and inge- nious piece of machinery is yet to be placed at the headquarters. It is the regulator for the bells and gongs, and consists of a large white dial, upon which all the figures, from 1 to 9, are exhibited, with indicating fingers inting to the numbers to be sounded. For iastance, if Wo. 24 box gives the signal, the fingers point to Numbers 2and 1. The operator at headquarters, by simply striking keys, sounds the number pon the large bells and upon the gongs in every engine-house at the same instant, thus ae every engine to head immediately for e fire. To-day the superintendent of the work is @ngaged in adjusting the machinery in the tower of St Mary’s (German Catholic) Church, Gth street, where one of the alarm bells is jocated. The sudden striking of the bell of the Bap‘icst Church yesterday caused considerable excite- ment among the neighbors, who were not awa-e of the reason, and especially because of the | manner in which the bell was struck. The officers have for some time been endeavoring to stop this sport, but were un- successful, so well did the boys keep watch, until Sunday afternoon, when officers Buil, Hurdle and Borland made a descent on them, and after racing them through the mnd caught three, giving their names as Rob’t Evans, Jno. Evans and Charles Henry Albert Ridow, and took them to the First Ward station. Justice Drury fined the two first $2 each, and commit- ted the latter to the workhouse. ————>—_—__ i A HaRp CAVALRYMAN.—Yesterday after- noon a drunken caysiry sergeant created an excitement in the neighborhood of 19th and K streets, by a general onslaught on ali the colored people he chanced to meet, and a pro- miscuous breaking of windows and furniture in that locality Among other places he went into & blacksmith shop, kept by a colored man named Burrill, running the workmen out and throwing the tools after them, he being at the time abetted by a number of other soldiers. Sergeant Hurley stopped the fellow’s mischief by arresting him, and wason his way with him to the station when he met a guard, and delivered him over to them. ewe eet CANTERBURY HALL, Washington, Aug. 16. To THE PUBLIC.—A scurrilous article ap- peared in the Chronicle of Monday, emanaidng from the brain of the selfstyled «Literary Ad- vertiser”’ of a one horse third story show crib, situated in the vicinity of Pennsylyania avye- nue and Ninth street, in which he takes occa- sion to attack me personally with a tirade of | billingsgate slang entirely devoid of truth, meaning, or sense, and which I have deter- Mined to take no further noticeof. I am al- ways open for a fair competition in my business, but must acknowledge my inability to cope with the miserable cur of the aforesaid third story kennel, in blackguard composition as that is a part of his nature. The public will judge fairly of the merits of the performance atthe Canterbury, and will at allevents give us the credit of advertising such performers only a3 we can present to them, and of having neveras yet carded a performer to have them perform elsewhere when they were engaged to us; in which con- nection we would suggest to the «Literary Advertiser” of this one-horse, infamous den, tfiat he need not attempt toinveigle our per- formers into his vile haunt by promises of in- crease of salary, when in reality he intends to defraud them altogether. That dodge has been practiced by the pettifogging “Literary Ad- vertiser’ to such & degree that the profession are posted with regard to it. He has one ortwo people whom we can use, and shall therefore deprive him of them at once; but we shall not promise them an increase of salary—oh, no! we shall pay them promptly a fair remuneration for their services, and in due course of time we intend to buy the aforesaid “Literary Ad- vertiser” and use him to drive our show wagon. In conclusion, when we are convinced that this literary quack has paid all his just debts— his performers, printing bills, taxes, license, board and washing, and when his ballet girls quit complaining that they have to follow him inte grog-shops to dun him fer money enough to pay their board from week to week—if he will then apply to us for the situation of driver of our advertising wagon, (a literary appoint- ment, by the way,) we might be induced to lend bim a helping hand.
